ALEX: Mt first job was with Craig, the joiners, in Station Road. The son left to be a teacher and they wouldnae keep me. I got paid off in the third year of my time. We had rows. Craig was a funny bloke – you didnae ken if you were pleasing him or no! He got us a job in the Scottish Special Housing, finished my time there. We put up houses in Mayfield, Gorebridge, away in Ratho. I used to get up at quarter to eight in the morning to get the bus to Waverley. It took a dozen men to West Calder and Ratho and Linburn. I earned £5 a week.BILL: I earned 26/8d as an apprentice, not much was it? I was apprentice engineer at the Shore at Leith, a five year apprenticeship. I got up at quarter to five. I lived at Howgate. I’d to walk from Howgate to Penicuik to get a bus to Leith. I used to wake up all the cocks and start them crowing! In they days you were keen! I was ship repairing. I worked with Sam Blyth, the shopfloor man. Another lad was Willie Malcolm, nicknamed “Bochles”. He’d terrible feet, could hardly walk.
