Telenor wanted complete 2.5/3G HSPA+ replacement with seamless upgrade path to EPC service delivery

Business:

• Migration of existing consumer & corporate APN’s

• Wholesale replacement of existing Ericsson mobile core

Technical:

• Overlay 2.6Ghz LTE hotspots to supplement 2.1Ghz & 1800Mhz bands in semi-urban areas

• SIGTRAN on Gr/Gs/Gf and IuPS-C towards Huawei RNC

• Single platform for all functions with deployment flexibility & reduced TCO

• Complete mobile packet core solution (SGSN/GGSN, P/S-GW, MME)

• Utilize Inline Services for ECS (eGCDR generation), policy enforcement, analytics /reporting

• Investment protection, operational commonality

• All BSC’s/RNC’s & eNB’s cut-over to Cisco SGSN/MME:

- Running over 1M SAAU’s on UMTS network with EPC production trials in progress

• Centralized architecture with control and bearer functions segmented in separate systems in 3 NDC’s

SITUATION

SOLUTIONCHALLENGES

RESULTS

Verizon Wireless wanted to evolved from a 3G CDMA network to a 4G LTE network

Business:

• VzW had a nationwide 3G CDMA network but it could not offer simple, global roaming

• Wanted to get away from QCOM royalties structure

Technical:

• Aggressive timelines for deployment meant not everything could be fully specified

• Complicated hand-off procedures (CDMA<->LTE)

Cultural:

• Moving from CDMA to GSM – huge learning curve

• Early POC “AIMS” specified by VzW and their core vendors (2008) – bake off for LTE vendor’s

• Dedicated engineering & field support teams helped ensure success

• Heavy standards work in parallel with development efforts

• Carrier class, high density, service/feature rich gateway solution for all access technologies (CDMA, eHRPD, LTE)

• Investment protection, operational commonality

• Cisco worked collaboratively with VzW to drive:

⁻ Standards architectures

⁻ Call flows, test plans, interface specifications

• Drove the architectures and technological choices putting Cisco at a competitive advantage

• Trusted advisor and true technology partner
