BUILDING CLOUD NATIVE CAPABILITIES

Helping to build cloud native capabilities for Cisco Systemsand defining a clear roadmap for future development.
Cisco Case Study
In recent years, Cisco has initiated a significant shift from hardware towards cloud native software. Looking to gain a hold in an emerging market, they have targeted the development of innovative technologies within the realm of microservices. The orchestration of microservices, however, proved to be a major challenge.
Cisco wanted to establish itself as a leader in microservices infrastructure innovation, but lacked the expertise to fully realise it. We brought to the table our advanced engineering knowledge—with a focus on Docker, Apache Mesos, Elastic and Terraform—and helped translate Cisco’s vision into practical steps. We developed innovative software, including several Apache Mesos
CHALLENGE Wanting to position themselves as leaders in this realm, Cisco saw a unique opportunity and began development of a fully integrated, open source solution called Mantl.io. A highly complex project with the potential to drive the future of cloud native technology, Mantl would involve bringing together new—and often unstable—technology that required advanced technical expertise. This is where we stepped in.
SOLUTION frameworks, in order to tackle specific technical challenges. Among them was the highly regarded Elasticsearch framework. Other software that we developed, like the minimesos open source project, allowed us to test Mesos frameworks and led to the integration of HashiCorp Terraform with Cisco UCS. These explorations resulted in the development of an innovative PoC for advanced projects like App Intent, which is currently being integrated into Cisco’s continuous delivery platform, Shipped.
The greatest issue developers face today is the lack of build and test platforms matching the various deployment platforms. Developers need to build and test cloud native applications locally in the same way they deploy
them to production. Container Solutions helped Cisco solve this issue.

By looking at the challenges with a fresh perspective, our team was able to help build cloud native capabilities for Cisco and define a clear roadmap for its future development. A significant outcome of this collaboration has been the development of tools that play an important role in the current market. The ElasticSearch Mesos framework, for example, is one of the most popular among those available, and is used extensively by several major organisations. Minimesos, the first and only project that allows testing Mesos

frameworks before release, has paved the way for other open source projects such as mini-swarm and minikube. Overcoming challenges faced in the development of open source projects like Mantl led to innovative new products, such as App Intent, and helped Cisco introduce its customers to cloud native computing. Achievements were packaged as marketing materials—technical blog posts, articles, flyers at conferences, meetup and conference talks (including keynotes)—further connecting to the community. Through these actions, Cisco was able to establish its credibility as an innovator and leader in the cloud native space.
