It was with a sense of shock I read in Tuesday’s Courier that Waipa District Council is seri-ously considering rezoning the property Rosehill Farm owned by the esteemed Pollard family, who helped form our town over the early years.

Thoroughbred horses have been a major part of Te Awamutu for generations. Should Rosehill Stud be broken up by this subdivision, it will be a total disgrace.

When a person’s rights are abro-gated most people will be shocked by methods undertaken, and a livelihood is put in a position of jeopardy.

Please reconsider this matter as you evidently do not realise the strengths of interest monetarily in Te Awamutu bred racehorses.

I am hoping Council considers this matter with fair and open minds.

SHIRLEY HOPPING

Rezoning shock

Until recently I was unaware that replica hand guns are openly on sale at a shop in Te Awamutu, and no doubt, in Hamilton.

Enquiry with the police revealed that there is no law against the sale of these weapons, and there-fore no control over who purchases them and for what purpose.

I consider it a sad refl ection on our society that we are prepared

to allow this situation to continue, presumably to avoid accusations of human rights violation.

It is hardly surprising that would-be criminals are able to threaten banks and shopkeepers, when very convincing replicas can be bought by anyone for upwards of $30.

On behalf of Hospice New Zea-land I would like to thank the New Zealand public for generously supporting the national hospice appeal earlier this year.

For everyone who helped to make this appeal a success, wheth-er they made a donation, held a Time to Remember or volunteered, your input and support is much appreciated.

I am delighted to say more than $850,000 was raised this year, which will go a long way to top up hospices’ funding.

Hospices provide care and sup-

port free of charge. But because they are only partially Govern-ment-funded, they rely heavily on community fundraising to cover running costs.

Thank you once again for be-ing a part of the national hospice appeal. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated and is vital in allowing hospices to provide qual-ity palliative care to everyone in New Zealand who needs it.

Daffodil Day ‘07 springs into life By Cathy Asplin

Most people - young or old - have had their lives or the lives of their loved ones affected in some way by cancer.

This was clearly the case for Te Awamutu College students who provided some of the scrumptious baking for a Daf-fodil Day cake stall staged outside the National Bank on Friday.

Amongst the goodies donated were cheesecakes, double chocolate muffi ns, carrot cakes and biscuits.

Te Awamutu College Home Economics HOD Maree Letford says their efforts towards Daffodil Day this year were par-ticularly poignant, as students had just farewelled schoolmate Danielle Turnbull last week.

Danielle (16) died from acute lymphob-lastic leukaemia and had been the ‘face’ of a CanTeen fundraiser earlier this year.

National Bank manager Fran Awburn says the gesture by the College students was impressive and hugely appreciated.

“It was a wonderful addition to the se-lection of baking donated.”

Network for Women in Dairying was an-other group to show support this way, as well as a large number of individuals.

National Bank staff also had a busy day selling food off the barbecue, freshly picked daffodils and a range of Daffodil Day items. A range of raffl es added to the effort with $4235 raised on Daffodil Day.

This added to funds raised from the auction the previous night.

Auctioneer Steve Weck worked hard to collect $4447 from guests in the brand new restaurant ‘Archies’ (Mahoe Street)

Owner David Gibson generously hosted the event and provided food for guests.

The Cycle of Hope boosted the Te Awamutu National Bank’s total raised for the Cancer Society to a record $11,700.

Across town Rutherford House staged a Daffodil Day fundraising morning with entertainment provided for family, friends and neighbours.

They enjoyed a tasty morning tea be-fore being entertained on the keyboard and piano by vision-impaired entertainer Louise Henry.

The sing-a-long to some old time tunes also prompted several guests to dance - with all ages taking part in the old fa-vourite ‘Knees Up Mother Brown’

Rutherford House also sold preserves and raffl es to boost funds.

An important decision facing the Board at its monthly meeting was prioritising new footpaths and kerbing.

With a budget of $70,000, and the need much higher than this, the exercise is fairly diffi cult.

Some of the Board members had taken the time to go and have a look at the footpaths mentioned, but this made the decision making process more diffi cult because we felt the whole list needed doing.

But the budget demands we get on with our de-cision and our consolation is that the remaining streets will be done in the next round.

Altering the footpath along Alexandra Street under the gingko trees is still being investigated.

Transit is anticipating fi nishing the footpath from the Golf Club to the existing footpath, which will then give Kihikihi pedestrians a footpath all the way to Te Awamutu.

This project was a Board initiative some years ago, along with a survey done by Transit and your current Board is pleased to see that it will be completed.

The ongoing issues of security at Selwyn Park were again discussed and the Board and Council are of the same mind so we should see a solution in the near future.

It is such a shame when a few spoil things for most.

Any solution is a cost against rates and this is something we could do without.

We received a request from Te Awamutu Net-ball for assistance with resealing their car park area.

Those of us that are at netball every Saturday in winter, were overjoyed to see the improvement in the car park, which could help little with more organised parking.

But it does not take away the serious problem

that exists with the overall parking prob-lem.

Traffi c congestion gets quite dangerous at times and safety could be compromised.

The tolerance shown by netball players and their support families has to be admired, but maybe the future of netball at this location is a further issue to be debated.

Following discussion with some Kihikihi residents, I put forward a resolution for a con-cept and beautifi cation plan to be developed in consultation with the Kihikihi community.

There is substantial amount of funds to be spent on roads and

footpaths but the general look for Kihikihi is what needs promoting or improving.

More of this to follow and when we have some-thing to offer I will call a public meeting.

The Board received minutes from seven organi-sations with which we have an interest.

We also received a community services and fi nancial report from Council, along with envi-ronmental reports and public notifi cations of applications for a resource consent.

Our meetings are of interest to everyone, so if you have time on the second Tuesday of the month come along and join us at 7pm.

By Community Board Council representative

Hazel Barnes.

Board walks the talk

Survey part of plan to attract businessWaikato economic develop-

ment organisation, The Ka-tolyst Group, has begun survey-ing Waikato businesses to fi nd out why they chose to establish locally, what they like about do-ing business in the region and what things they recommend improving.

Waikato businesses can fi ll out the survey through a link on the home page of the Katolyst website: www.katolyst.co.nz

Katolyst CEO, Graham Smith, says survey results will be used to help develop regional economic strategies, including attracting businesses to the region.

“Katolyst works closely with many of the top business lead-ers in the region. And, they have been telling us that a co-ordinated approach is required to help businesses that want to establish in the Waikato.

“This survey is about getting together some facts that will help us develop an action plan for attracting additional busi-nesses to our region.

“Once we have that plan de-veloped, implementation will require a co-ordinated approach by a range of stakeholders, including the Chamber of Com-merce, local councils, Katolyst and other appropriate agen-cies,” explains Mr Smith.

Alcohol a factor in mid-afternoon crash

EMERGENCY services extract a crashed Mazda from the retaining wall of a Lyon Street property after the driver crashed on Friday afternoon. 247075AD

A local man will face charges of careless driving and driving with excess breath alcohol after causing a crash on Lyon Street on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 3.30pm after the driver of a Maz-da pulled from the left hand side

of the road and did a U-turn in the path of a southbound utility.

The Mazda crossed the busy road, luckily not hitting any oncoming vehicles, mounted the footpath and crashed into a resi-dential retaining wall.

Both vehicles had reasonably severe front suspension damage

as a result of the crash.No-one was injured, but both

vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Police say the driver of the Mazda had been drinking and returned an evidential breath alcohol reading in excess of the legal limit.

Trust Waikato donated $8.7 Million of donations to 987 com-munity groups throughout the Waikato in its latest donation round.

The bulk of community groups will receive between $1,000 and $30,000 which Trust chair, John Kilbride, says illustrates the Trust’s preference to spread the funding.

“It’s important to us that as

many people as possible benefi t from the Trust’s money, not just a few larger groups or projects,” he says.

Chief executive Bev Gatenby believes the ripple effects of the donations are immense.

“The 987 community groups that have received funding pro-vide services, activities, events, support and opportunities of benefi t to thousands of Waikato

people,” she says. “We regu-larly see these funds tangibly strengthen our communities.”

In line with its strategic ob-jectives, Trust Waikato has allo-cated $3,592,330 ($3.5 million) to welfare groups with a particular focus on those which address un-derlying causes of social issues.

Donations can be viewed on the Trust’s website: www.trustwaikato.co.nz.

A highlight of the AFS King Country Chapter luncheon to cel-ebrate 60 years of intercultural exchanges was the presentation of special long service awards to Mike and Christine Mills, Fran Awburn, Ruth Heppenstall, Trish Oldham and Sherril Lawrence.

AFS (or American Field Service as it used to be known) has been operating since 1947, with New Zealand involved in exchanges right from the start.

Born out of a desire by the ambulance drivers who served in WWII for better international un-derstanding and peace, a scheme was set up following the war where people could experience everyday life in other countries, promoting an exchange of ideas and a sharing of cultures.

Apart from the USA, New Zea-land was the only other English speaking country involved in the fi rst year, largely because of the good relationship between the American ambulance drivers and the NZ army.

AFS EXPERIENCESMany of those present described

their decision to go on a student exchange as the best move they had ever made, and it was an expe-rience that had a major impact on their later careers and their ability to integrate with people from other cultures.

Maurice Baxter who went to the USA in 1983 urged the students currently being hosted by the King Country Chapter to make the most of their experience and the oppor-tunities it offered.

Sue Macky, also a returnee from the USA, commented on the doors her AFS involvement had opened for her, because so many of those she comes into contact through her work internationally have also been on AFS.

Such experiences are not restrict-ed to secondary school students.

Ruth Heppenstall from Otorohanga, spoke of her volunteer exchange to Malaysia last year and

how even three weeks living with families in that country gave her a totally different understanding of the Malay culture.

Other families at the luncheon spoke about their own intercultur-al experiences with VSA in Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe and how that involvement had been among the most rewarding of their lives.

LIFE IN THE USAAlix McDowall (nee Craig) from

Auckland also talked about being one of the fi rst exchange students to go from the King Country area.

She left Te Kuiti High School in 1960 and embarked on a fi ve week boat trip to New York with 19 other AFS students to begin her exchange year.

The same group of students re-turned to New Zealand in 1961 on a Flying Tiger, a bone-shaking WWII relic that island-hopped and took fi ve days to get back to Whenuapai, often needing repairs on the way.

The election of John F. Kennedy as United States president, racial segregation and the growing ten-sion between America and Russia in the early Kennedy years were a revelation for a young girl who had her formative years in Te Kuiti dur-ing the 1950s.

Ross Sutton from Parawera was another guest speaker and return-ee who spoke of being in the USA at a defi ning moment in history in 1963/64.

He recalled coming out of class in November 1963 to fi nd students crying in the corridor. Kennedy had just been shot. There was a feeling of disbelief and despair that such a thing could happen.

Mr Sutton was amazed.“I could not imagine such an

outpouring of grief in New Zealand if a similar thing had happened to the New Zealand Prime Minister or Governor General.”

One of the biggest adjustments he had to make early in his ex-change was getting used to being

part of a family. He had been at boarding school

since the age of seven, so daily con-tact with parents and siblings was a whole new experience.

Mr Sutton is planning to attend the 60th AFS Anniversary celebra-tion being held in New York later this year and will be taking his 83-year-old American host mother along as his guest.

LASTING TIESOne of the themes that emerged

throughout the day was the contact that many still have with their AFS host families or students and how those relationships and friendships have extended to the wider family and on into their adult lives.

For Mrs McDowell and Mr Sut-ton, that contact has been main-tained for over 45 years.

AFS co-ordinator Sandra Metcal-fe, who organised the 60th anniver-sary luncheon in Te Awamutu, was thrilled at the response and the stories that came out on the day.

“My own AFS connection goes back to 1972 when I attended Sue Macky’s farewell party and met my husband John.

“My mother, Val Gillgren, became involved in AFS when my sister Raewyn went to the USA in 1977 and my interest was reignited when my son Chris went off on his overseas exchange in 2002.”

Since then the Metcalfe family

has hosted several students. “The diversity and colour these

teenagers have brought to our lives has more than made up for the challenges that come with parent-ing.

“It is a wonderful time to be in-volved in the lives of these young people, to see them grow and ma-ture into young adults during their year in New Zealand.”

As an advocate for the benefi ts of intercultural exchanges, Mrs Metcalfe is happy to talk to anyone who may be considering such an experience, either as a student or as a host family.

She can be contacted for further details (ph 871 3250).

Carolyn and Barry Nelson’s ability to share a tragedy in their lives has meant that many more local people are now aware of the need for organ donation.

The Te Awamutu couple have been guest speakers at a number of meetings where they have told the story of the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Melanie (19), who died just over 12 years

ago as a result of a car crash at Tirau.Melanie’s wish to be an organ donor re-

sulted in improved lives for many grateful recipients.

The positive response to her parents’ efforts to improve the low rate of organ donation in New Zealand has meant they have set up an ANZ account ‘Melanie’s Legacy’. Money deposited in this account

goes towards organ donation services. The proceeds of a local event on Septem-

ber 9 will also go into that account.A barbecue will be staged outside The

Warehouse on Sunday (from 10am) on what would have been Melanie’s 32nd birthday.

New Zealand dairy prices continue to soar with dairy product prices rising approxi-mately 78% in the year to Au-gust 2007.

Prices for butter, skim milk and whole milk powder, ched-dar cheese and casein have also dramatically increased in the past month - by an average 19.2%.

Casein, a protein found in milk and used in many foods as a binding agent, rose to approximately $NZ17,000 per tonne in recent weeks, well above the approximate $NZ9900 per tonne received a year ago.

AGRI Fund chairman Peter Jackson says: “Early indica-tions are that global dairy

product prices are continuing to rise, despite the recent vola-tility of world share and credit markets. We are experiencing a dramatic shift in demand for milk and milk-associated product from emerging mar-kets. Supply is struggling to keep up.

“Even if world growth slows due to global fi nancial devel-

opments, the NZ dollar would likely fall further, buffering New Zealand dairy farmer returns. The average New Zea-land dairy farmers’ revenue could well exceed $725,000 this season.”

Mr Jackson says in the long term, the future of dairy farm-ing does not revolve around hoping for a lower NZ dollar.

Dairy industry outlook has rarely looked rosier than now

Te Awamutu Hearing Associa-tion is keen to ensure residents with hearing impairment are getting the most out of their hearing aids.

At a touch you can enjoy a programme of enhanced sound.

Most behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids have a tiny coil of wire inside them - called a ‘tel-ecoil’, so that you can use your aid with loop systems.

A room loop system is a large loop of wire fi tted around the room (or part of it) connected to a microphone and amplifi er.

When someone talks into the microphone it converts that person’s voice into an electrical signal which is amplifi ed, and

sent around the loop of wire.If you are within the loop and

the telecoil (T switch) in your hearing id is activated, you an pick up very clearly what the person is saying into the micro-phone.

This can be a real advantage if you’re a long way from the speaker, or if there is a lot of background noise as the tel-ecoil only picks up the signal from the loop and not the sound around you.

Many places have loop sys-tems, such as theatres, cinemas, conference venues and places of worship.

You can buy telephones de-scribed as ‘hearing aid compat-

ible’ which have a small loop built into the earpiece.

Neckloops and ear hooks are accessories which make it possi-ble to use your hearing aid with other equipment such as TVs or stereos.

The Hearing Association stocks personal loop systems and the hearing therapist can help advise you on your T set-tings on your hearing aid. Te Awamutu Hearing Association intends holding hearing aid trouble-shooting days and dis-plays of listening devices in the near future.

Watch this paper for dates and venues. For more informa-tion phone 871 3649.

Rider’s Olympic hopes hit by equine infl uenza

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu equestrian rider

Blair Richardson is thanking his lucky stars that his top horse Maximum Overkill was inoculated for equine fl u last year.

The Beijing Olympics hopeful is trapped with about 250 hors-es and 200 equestrian riders, grooms and offi cials at Morgan Park, west of Brisbane, which was quarantined with about 40 horses showing signs of de-veloping the highly contagious equine infl uenza.

Richardson was lying second after the dressage on Maximum Overkill at the World Cup qual-ifying event at Morgan Park when police and the army shut down the venue.

Two of Richardson’s three horses Clifton Zengarie and Knight Rider, were showing an elevated temperature and a cough, while Maximum Overkill was not as badly affected.

“Some of the horses are re-ally sick with the debilitating illness,” Ron Richardson, Blair’s father, told the Courier.

“Blair is just thankful that Maximum Overkill had all his fl u jabs in June/July last year in preparation for the World Games in Germany.”

Richardson has taken over the role of rider’s representative at Morgan Park.

His father says he has been in-undated with media interviews and has had meetings with the premier of Queensland.

Richardson’s wife Nicky, an Australian Olympian, was al-lowed to return home to the couple’s two young children in Scone - 10 hours drive away - while he made a brief trip home for his son Charlie’s second birthday, before returning to Morgan Park indefi nitely.

He could be there for a month to six weeks.

All the horses are presently tied up in a yard, used for a two-day event.

Richardson’s focus has been the welfare of the horses, ac-quiring feed and arranging for day paddocks to be built so the horses can get some exercise.

The outbreak of equine infl uenza has stopped horse

movement in some states and sparked fear that it could crip-ple Australia’s billion-dollar racing industry.

It will also have an effect on horses wanting to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Richardson has been in hot form in his quest to gain selec-tion to represent New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics, placing second on Maximum Overkill at the recent international three-day event at Melbourne.

His next big competition was to be the international four star event in Adelaide in November.

If it is cancelled, he may have to take his top mount to the US or UK to push for Olympic selection.

It would be at a considerable fi nancial cost for one of this country’s top young riders.

Richardson has lived at Scone

for fi ve years. He and Nicky have two sons, Oscar (4) and Charlie (2).

Reakes Pirongia strokeplay champ

Jillian Reakes won the silver strokeplay championship with a 54-hole total of 243 at Pirongia Golf Club.

Reakes was eight shots clear of the runner-up Bev Parsons.

Brenda Staples, 281, took out the Bronze I title, with Eileen Blackwood, 288, the runner-up.

Rosemary Collinson-Smith, 305, made a ‘one-horse’ race of winning Bronze II - fi nishing well clear of the runner-up Ailsa Bailey, 335.

Net scramble winners were Parsons (division I), with 70 net, and Collinson-Smith (divi-sion II, with 69.

Te Awamutu College boys’ 1st XI soccer team have come along in leaps and bounds this season.

The Graham Smith coached side capped a successful past month win-ning the bottom eight plate on debut at the National Secondary Schools’ Satellite Soccer Tournament in Pa-pamoa.

The Te Awamutu College players showed tremendous character to bounce back after losing all their four pool games by one goal mar-gins.

They won their plate quarter fi nal against Mount Maunganui 2-1, the semi-fi nal against Penrose 2-1 and the fi nal against Freyberg (Palmer-ston North) 4-2 in a penalty shoot out after the game had been drawn

1-1.It was the fi rst time Te Awamutu

College had entered a team in the tournament.

To fi nish ninth out of the 16 teams was a fantastic result.

Te Awamutu’s 1st XI were fresh from fi nishing runners-up to Ham-ilton Boys’ High School in division three of the Waikato secondary schools’ championship.

Hamilton BHS sneaked home 3-2 in the fi nal, with both Te Awamutu’s goals going to Phillip Peake, who was set up by Wasu Krishna on both occasions.

Hamilton BHS were always go-ing to be tough to beat. Their school fi elds 22 boys’ soccer teams com-pared with Te Awamutu’s two.

By Colin ThorsenA highly-rated New Zealand

professional cyclist is singing the praises of Rushlee Bucha-nan after her stunning success in US and Canada.

The Te Awamutu 19-year-old was the stand out member of the Susy Pryde coached New Zealand Jazz Apple Cycling team on their two month cam-paign overseas.

“Rushlee now has a steady framework in place to become an all-round professional ath-lete, with the potential to en-tertain professional contracts in the coming years,” Pryde told the Courier.

“She will have hurdles to overcome but this is part and parcel of becoming a hardened competitor.”

Pryde should know, she had more than 500 podium fi nishes during her 13-year profession-al racing career.

Buchanan’s list of achieve-ments for the Jazz Apple team makes impressive reading:

First in San Rafael Crite-rium (San Francisco), Tour of Whiterock Criterium and Tour de Delta Criterium; third in Tour de Delta road race; sec-ond in Tour of Whiterock road race; second overall in Tour of Whiterock; second in Queen of Mountains Tour de Delta; third in Nevada City Classic; ninth in Sonoma Classic Infi -neon Raceway road race; ‘Most Aggressive Rider’ stage four of Nature Valley International, and 18th in Liberty Classic (Philadelphia).

In was a monumental effort, made all the more impressive by Pryde placing the added re-sponsibility of team captain on

the Te Awamutu teenager. The template for the cam-

paign was to give the group of fi ve Kiwi riders the skills and experience of being a profes-sional trade team, their re-sponsibilities to a sponsor, and managing themselves while being on the road.

According to Pryde, Bucha-nan developed to become a mature and integral compo-nent in captaining the team to much of their success.

“She was respected by her peers. They all listened and took her viewpoint as vital constructive critique - impres-

sive for one so young.”Pryde says Buchanan had

her share of spills and falling ill with a cold, impacting her training, yet she still managed to perform every time when it really counted in the racing.

“This is Rushlee’s biggest attribute in my mind. The im-portance of performing when it counts, and not leaving it out on the roads in training.”

Pryde says having a depend-able and reliable captain and performer such as Buchanan sets a corner-stone for a team, which every professional team looks for.

“Rushlee still has much more developing to do, including de-ploying a little more mongrel at the fi nish when sprinting herself. But her true spirit in team execution of tactics and intuition meant she either put one of the team members or herself in the position to win.

“Second place meant nothing to us, so we always sought to be in a position to win despite being a young, rookie team on the circuit.”

Pryde says the most ‘beau-tiful’ of Buchanan’s victories came when she was in the throes of sacrifi cing herself for her team-mate Malindi MacLean, who has a very fast sprint.

On the fi nal lap of an hour long, fast criterium in San Rafael, California, Buchanan drove the pace for the entire last lap to keep the pace high for MacLean to launch off her wheel in true professional lead-out fashion.

MacLean was cut off by a rider in the last corner and shouted to Buchanan to ‘Go’. Buchanan still had the engine left to fi nish it off despite the plan for the lead-out going awry, and having destroyed herself during the race.

“If Rushlee keeps develop-ing in this positive way, then I would take great pride in seeing her have success at Commonwealth and Olympic level,” says Pryde.

Junior rugby thriller at Park

Te Awamutu Sports 11th grade junior rugby team cov-ered themselves in glory draw-ing 17-all with their Manurewa counterparts.

Such was the passion and skill on display, you would have been forgiven for thinking you were watching a Te Awamutu v Counties Manukau representa-tive match.

The visitors were always go-ing to be a hard nut to crack.

They easily won their grade of the Counties Manukau club

championship this year and have lost only once in four years.

Both sets of spectators wore down their fi nger nails as the game could have gone either way.

With the scores locked at 17-all, the fi nal whistle blew and both sides agreed it was the best result after scoring three tries each.

Te Awamutu Sports’ try scor-ers were forward Angus Seddon and fullback Mitchell Braun (2).

Dion Spice added a conversion. The Manurewa coaches com-

mented it was the toughest encounter their team had had all year.

One was overheard saying it was an outstanding game, played in excellent spirit.

Manurewa presented Te Awamutu Sports with a club jersey signed by all the players.

It was the second year that they have travelled down to play Te Awamutu Sports, hav-ing easily won last year’s game.

REPLACEMENT Te Awamutu Sports’ 11th grade halfback Sam Hunter has fullback Mitchell Braun in support as he takes the attack to Manurewa at Albert Park. 2470721AD

Ohaupo’s Doug James provided the fi reworks with a brace of 180s against Waikeria in round two of the darts championship.

James won all his three singles as Ohaupo swept aside Waikeria 19-4.

Paul Harper featured in three of the four matches Waikeria managed to win - the triples, pairs and the fi rst of his three singles.

Warriors were too good for RSA, winning 21-2.

RSA players to prevent a white-wash were Mike Armstrong and Don Hastie, who chalked up singles wins over Peter Morris and Fraser Martin respectively.

The third division one match was a much closer affair, with Rebels beating Nomads Too 15-8.

George Cox was the stand out, winning four of his fi ve matches for Rebels.

In division two, Hobbits main-tained their perfect start to the championship, beating Pirongia Hotel 11-6.

They did it the hard way, having trailed 3-0 after the triples and fi rst pairs match.

Odds & Bods kept pace with Hob-bits, beating Allsorts 11-6.

Nomads beat Joy’s Riff Raff 12-5.

James throws 180 twice Croquet openerTe Awamutu Cro-

quet Club’s pre-season tournament was well patronised by players from throughout the Waikato.

Loral Piggott (Group III) and Dorothy Scott (Group IV) were Te Awamutu players to record wins.

The club season of-fi cially opens locally in Victoria Park on Satur-day. Visitors are always welcome and tuition is available for all new players

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of War Of The Worlds, playing Auckland’s Vec-tor Arena Friday 28 and Saturday 29, September, by winning a copy of the DVD of the live show.

After selling out are-nas in the UK in 2006,

playing to enthralled crowds across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, New Zealand-ers will now have the opportunity to witness one of the best-selling recordings of all time; Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds.

The new version is presented live in a thrill-ing theatrical and multi-media spectacle, with a brilliant cast, including, 23 years after his death, one of the world’s great-est actors, Richard Bur-ton, at the helm ‘in sight and sound’ as George Herbert, The Journalist.

Set in HG Wells’ Victorian England, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Ver-sion of The War of The Worlds brilliantly em-bodies the tale of Mar-tians invading Earth and their terrifying trail of destruction.

It launched what was to become a plethora of works, ranging from video games through to a feature length fi lm, de-veloped from HG Wells’ story.

The stellar cast, from England, includes Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward and Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann, both re-creat-ing their roles from the original album, and the recent sell-out UK tour. They also feature on the two-disc DVD.

They will be joined on-stage by Australia’s three-time MTV Best Male Artist of The Year Shannon Noll, plus the wonderful talents of Rachael Beck and Michael Falzon.

Included in the mas-sive production are ground-breaking spe-cial effects with a 30 foot Martian Fighting Machine fi ring Heat Rays at the audience, 100 foot wide screens showing cutting-edge CGI-animation and es-pecially created fi lmed sequences.

This is a not to be missed truly unique stunning visual and au-ral spectacle - New Zea-land could not ask for more as its fi rst arena spectacular.

Be there! Tickets from Ticketmaster.

To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a

standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘War of the Worlds DVD Com-petition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Friday.
