The company is in the middle of a district wide trial of 120-litre wheelie bins for all urban residents in the district. It is also examining options for rural residents. The three week trial which has been ‘rolled out’ around Waipa has seen many take up the optional con- version from the traditional rubbish bags to regular wheelie bins. We are saying ‘what are your refuse require- ments and we’ll do what we can to provide a matching service’,” Mr Kirk told the Courier. He also said there was “no inten- tion any time soon to scrap the bag option” - which seems to be preferred by the ‘half a bag a week’ people (as evidenced in the Courier’s Letters to the Editor column and in a Waikato Times article based on these). “Because of the cost of production of the bags, delivery and the margin for on-sellers, bags are a more expen- sive option for us than bins. Our goal is to continue the strong association EnviroWaste has with Waipa resi- dents. We’ve been working hard to re- duce bag drop-off points and increase kerbside service coverage. “We are also keen to support what (Waipa District) Council is doing in terms of waste diversion through its new kerbside recycling service, by promoting the smaller 120-litre bins as our primary service.” EnviroWaste’s advertised rate for the weekly wheelie bin service is around $13 per month, or $150 per annum (if paid in advance). Cost for a fortnightly collection is $95 per annum and for a monthly col- lection $47 per annum. Mr Kirk said the wheelie bin trial was a considerable expense for the company - but necessary in trying to improve the service and value resi- dents get out of their refuse service. Further to the letters and articles on the ’dog bite victim’ at the rugby grounds.

First, I do hope that the two-year-old is doing well after this ordeal.

Second, blame the owners of the dog for not restraining it.

We must also remember that a two-year-old is still a baby and needs to be in adult care at all times.

We don’t know what happened to cause the dog to bite the child - maybe this is the hold up Sabrina. In all fair-ness sometimes animals are teased or startled. This may not have been the case, but let’s wait and fi nd out.

There seems to be a vendetta to get this animal put down.

I would like to know if dogs have ever been allowed (restrained on a lead of

course) at the grounds and what the position is now.

My mother took her small dog (which was in her arms) to watch my young son play rugby and was asked to leave the grounds with the dog. I feel it is a very sad day when one incident can spoil it for everyone.

SANDRA MALLOYAbridged

Groups can make great decisionsHave you heard of a book by The New

Yorker columnist James Surowiecki called The Wisdom of Crowds - Why the many are smarter than the few?

Surowiecki begins his book by relating a story about British scientist Francis Galton who in 1906 attended a country fair. Galton had won renown - and noto-riety - for his work on statistics and the science of heredity. He was a man ob-sessed with the measurement of physi-cal and mental qualities and breeding.

The gene pool mattered to Galton be-cause he believed only a very few people had the characteristics necessary to keep societies healthy.

At the fair Galton, who came across a weight-judging competition of a fat ox, had a breakthrough experience and one that would change for ever the attitude of research and crowd psychology.

People were lining up to place wagers on what the weight of the ox would be after it had been slaughtered and dressed. About 800 people tried their luck. They were a diverse lot and while there were some butchers and farmers who presumably had a level of expertise at judging the weight of livestock. Many had no insider knowledge of cattle.

Galton was interested in fi guring out what the ‘average voter’ was capable of because he wanted to prove that the av-erage voter was capable of very little.

So he turned the competition into an impromptu experiment. When the con-test was over and the prizes awarded,

Galton borrowed the tickets from the organisers and ran a series of statisti-cal tests on them. Galton arranged the guesses (787) in order from highest to lowest and graphed them to see if they would form a bell curve. Then, among other things, he added all the contest-ants’ estimates and calculated the mean of the group’s guesses.

That number represented, you could say, the collective wisdom of the crowd and if the crowd was a single person, that was how much it would have guessed the ox weighed.

Galton undoubtedly thought the aver-age guess of the group would be way off the mark because after all, mix a few very smart people with some mediocre people and a lot of dumb people and it seems likely you’d end up with a dumb answer.

But Galton was wrong. The crowd guessed the ox would weigh 1197 pounds after it had been slaughtered and dressed. After it had been slaugh-tered and dressed the ox weighed 1198 pounds. In other words, the crowd’s judgement was essentially perfect.

Galton wrote later: “The result seems more creditable to the trustworthiness of a democratic judgement than might have been expected.”

That was, to say the least, an under-statement says Surowiecki who then expresses the simple, but powerful, truth that is at the heart of his book - under the right circumstances, groups

are remarkably intelligent and are often smarter than the smartest people in them.

Obviously we can’t review in detail the whole book here but you should understand that crowds at test matches, rallies etc are capable of getting it right and so are the voters at the polls.

Surowiecki’s last chapter Democ-racy: Dreams of the Common Good talks about deliberative polling and delibera-tive democracy and poses the question ‘what do voters think democracy is for?’.

He then goes on to say politicians want, above all, to be re-elected and therefore vote not in the way that they think is best for the electorate but for what they think has the best chance of winning over the voters; pork-barrel politics and paying special attention to the interests of powerful lobbies.

It seems strange then to think that the way to do politics well is to distance yourself as much as possible from citi-zens’ everyday lives.

In the same way a healthy market needs the constant fl ow of localised information that it gets from prices, a healthy democracy needs the constant fl ow of information it gets from people’s votes.

Wisdom of Crowds is at least thought provoking, at best a blueprint for a dra-matic change to democracy.

Joseph Dollimore Oliver was born at Auckland Maternity Hospi-tal on March 27, 1929, to John and Mary Elizabeth Oliver - eighth child in a family of 13.

But it was over 150km south in Te Awamutu area that Joe Oliver would go on to become a prominent businessman, at the panelworks business that still bears his name, a community servant, service club stalwart and family man.

In a ‘book’ written by Joe on his life history, in 1990 during a quiet patch in the real estate trade he had gone into, he says that at six months of age his family moved to Arohena to stay on uncle Lawrence Dollimore’s farm.

There were memories of clothes made by his mother on an old treadle sewing machine, some out of fl our bags (“which chaffed like hell”) and happy days playing in the bush or swimming in the dammed up river. Joe’s Maori mates taught him hunting, fi shing and mat mak-ing skills.

On his fi rst day at school, Joe was sent home to change out of his bib overalls into shorts - a 4.5km walk through dense bush and 3km over metal roads wearing no shoes (which, along with running behind the family’s Model T because they couldn’t all fi t in, must have been good training for his later efforts as a keen member of Te Awamutu Marathon Clinic).

Joe’s hunting prowess saw him providing food for the family table from the age of 10 and he loved the rural lifestyle.

He spent his form one and form three years in Christchurch, stay-ing with relatives - the fi rst year at Marist Brothers School - a signifi -cant milestone in his strong asso-ciation with the Catholic faith.

Joe recalled some familiar faces on an excursion to the pictures.

“I saw ‘Rewi’s Last Stand’ and it was great to see dad and local farmers and mill workers all dressed up as Red Coats shooting muskets at our Maori friends at the pa.”

Back in Te Awamutu, Joe began attending Te Awamutu District High School, boarding in town along with his brother Barry.

World War II was well underway when Joe left high school. He was

inspired by his brother Earle’s sto-ries of life at sea and wanted to join the merchant navy. He went to Auckland and his patience and perseverance paid off when he was signed on as a ‘deck boy’ with the M.V. Paroto, a double masted scow working in Northland area.

More experience on ships led to a rapid promotion for Joe - an an-nouncement at the Sailors’ Home in Auckland where Joe was living that two senior ordinary seamen were required for the Fort Alexandria sail-ing immediately, saw Joe promote himself two ranks from deck boy to senior ordinary seaman.

He asked an acquaintance to contact his mother and father and

let them know he had left the coun-try in the English Merchant Navy, at the age of ‘almost 15’.

He had a range of experiences that were exhilarating, frightening and illuminating - mixing with a wide variety of races.

There were many hair raising moments, including a virtual mutiny over atrocious conditions on one voyage and some ‘lucky escapes’ from overseas ports.

A job at a timber mill in the out-back near Perth was followed by a move back to Arohena, clearing bush and roading electric towers for the State Hydro line from Arapuni to Mangakino. Another stint at sea was followed by joining with his brothers to form a carrying business.

Missing the social life, Joe took a job with panelbeater Frank Pryor.

Eight years’ experience there led to the purchase of Olivers’ Town Depot opposite Te Awamutu Col-lege for Joe’s own business.

About this time he met Kathleen McHugh, and following a long range courtship (she lived at Te Puia), they were married in a large East Coast ceremony in 1955.

They lived in Te Awamutu for all their married life, raising six children - Lynette, Phillip, Shane, Wendy, Rochelle and Vaughan.

Joe loved being with people and enjoyed golf, tennis, fi shing, bowls and snooker (being particularly pro-fi cient in the latter).

He was a foundation member of Te Awamutu Lions Club and presi-dent the year funds were raised for building Freeman Home. He was

made an honorary life member of the club and a Lloyd Morgan Trust Life Member. He was also hon-oured with life membership by Te Awamutu Highland Pipe Band.

Joe’s Lions’ involvement led to him standing for Te Awamutu Bor-ough Council and being elected in October, 1971. He was re-elected each three years and then again in 1989 when amalgamation with Waipa County and Cambridge Borough created Waipa District Council.

Joe had his sights set on 30 years’ service in local government but he missed re-election in 1998. Nevertheless, 27 years was a tre-mendous contribution in anyone’s book.

A true believer in democracy, he had no beef with accepting the choice of the people and told the Courier his overriding emotion on not being re-elected was relief.

“I guess I was a square peg and the holes had been changed to round ones in recent years,” said Joe in typically phlegmatic style.

The book Joe wrote in 1990 was titled ‘Raised in Arohena - Grandad Joe’ - clues to his pride in his fam-ily and country upbringing, which allied with his social nature made him able to hold his own in any company.

Joe’s son Phillip, in reading a eulogy at his father’s funeral, said his father had a saying ‘too much is enough’ which was an ethos he lived by.

Joe is survived by his wife, their six children and 12 grandchildren.

By Cathy AsplinAnother ‘bright’ student arrived at Puahue

School recently.But Puratoke, a glow-worm mascot, wasn’t en-

rolling, she was visiting to reinforce some energy saving tips for students.

Puahue School (along with several others around the Waikato) was part of an Enviroschools Energy Challenge during term two which saw students explore ways of reducing electricity use (at home and at school) and consider the value of alternative energy sources, such as the sun.

The Enviroschools Energy Challenge was part of a regional push initiated by the Hamilton Environment Centre, in partnership with En-vironment Waikato and Hamilton City Council for greater awareness of ways to be smart about energy use and sustainable energy options.

This saw a collaborative approach to a month-long campaign.

One of the activities was a homework challenge for families: ‘the shortest shower award’. (The re-sults have been deemed confi dential!).

Students were also challenged to fi nd out how

to read an electricity meter, look at last year’s May - June electricity bill and see if, by chang-ing practices such as switching off lights when leaving the room, they could reduce this year’s consumption.

An energy audit was carried out at school so that students could see where energy was being used and how it could be reduced or saved.

Older students were able to apply their knowl-edge of energy effi ciency to design a model, sus-tainable classroom.

Discussions also centred around what energy options would be available to them in the future.

After a whole term learning how to be more energy effi cient, exploring alternative energy sources and making decisions to change habits to reduce energy consumption, the students were rewarded with the visit from Puratoke.

Teacher Jan Collins says the visit was a great way to reinforce what the children had learned during their enquiry learning programme.

“They have discovered the value of electricity and hopefully have taken on a lifelong habit of using energy wisely.”

Look out for Zane and Mel Scott’s big, black bus in Te Awamutu from Sunday. That’s where they live along with their three children, Tyler (8), Ethan (6) and Casey (4).

Zane and Mel lived in Te Awamutu for several years up to 2002. Zane worked on farms, until they both became involved in children’s work in 1997, which eventually became full time in 2000.

Then from 2002 to 2006, they moved to Miranda, near Thames, and were involved in intensive bull farming (2500 two year old bulls at one stage).

In July 2006 they left the farm, bought the big, black bus and moved back into full time children’s work, travelling all over New Zealand to children’s camps, schools, rallies and churches.

Their itinerary is almost com-

pletely booked from now until February 2008, taking them to places such as Fielding, Ngaru-awahia, Rotorua, Te Puke, Ka-tikati, Dunedin and more.

They run several different programmes: After School Kids’ Club, Rulz r Cool, Bible in Schools, holiday programmes and training for those who work with children.

From Sunday, July 8 to July 15 at Te Awamutu Primary School, Zane and Mel will be running a kids’ holiday pro-gramme, ‘The Force’, open to all children of primary and intermediate school age. Activi-ties at this event will include puppets, crazy games, prizes, drama, creative story telling, fun quiz games and more. The aim is to teach the children, in a relevant fun way, wholesome values based on the Bible.

It will run from 10.15 to 11.15

am on Sundays, and 10-12 noon on week days. Parents are also very welcome to attend and to watch Zane and Mel in action.

The combined churches of Te Awamutu are supporting and helping with the running of the event, and there is no charge. - it’s free.

Children do not need to be connected to a church to come along, it’s open to anyone, and some help with transport could be available.

For more information ring Liz Shoobert on 8713888, or Gael Franks on 8718667.

When asked what it’s like liv-ing in a house bus, they said, “We really love living on the road. We have woken up to some amazing views, met some really awesome people and love doing the work we do with children.”

The couple correspondence school their own three children.

A local honey health science company and a German uni-versity have joined forces in a bid to set industry standards for the use of manuka honey products to heal wounds, over-come stomach and skin prob-lems, and potentially in the fi ght against cancer.

The move comes in the wake of the discovery by the univer-sity’s researchers of the com-pound responsible for manuka honey’s anti-bacterial activity.

Te Awamutu-based Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd and the Technical University of Dresden have formed a part-nership to establish a process to certify levels of the com-pound in manuka honey.

Announcing the partnership, Manuka Health chief executive Kerry Paul said the universi-ty’s Institute of Food Chem-istry was the fi rst to identify the compound methylglyoxal (MGO) and prove its high levels in some New Zealand manuka honeys.

Mr Paul said the discovery that honey’s anti-bacterial abil-ity was directly related to MGO levels, was highly signifi cant for the industry.

“We have known for some time that manuka honey has this property. The term Unique Manuka Factor is used to de-scribe this honey’s consistently reliable anti-bacterial effect and UMF has been trademarked by the Active Manuka Honey As-

sociation.“But we haven’t known until

the German discovery what the compound is that is responsible. The next step is to put a stand-ards process in place with the industry which independently certifi es MGO levels in honey-based health products.”

Mr Paul said manuka honey was already well known for its reliable anti-bacterial activity, making it highly effective for overcoming gastro-intestinal and skin health problems and improving wound healing.

However, with the identifi ca-tion of MGO, further applica-tions for manuka honey were possible, including use as a

potential tumorcidal agent to fi ght cancer.

A research team led by Pro-fessor Thomas Henle, head of the Institute of Food Chemistry at Dresden, tested more than 80 honeys from around the world and found MGO levels as high as 700 mg/kg in some New Zealand manuka honeys, more than 70 times higher than ordi-nary honey.

Previous research had shown the highest concentrations in any food or drink were about 100 mg/kg in cocoa and coffee.

Mr Paul said during their re-search, Professor Henle’s team had developed assays for meas-uring MGO in honey.

Mr Paul said medical re-searchers had found MGO had the potential to act specifi cally against malignant cells in the body and has a signifi cant cura-tive effect on a wide range of cancers in animals.

Current research on humans shows MGO results in complete remission in about 40% of ma-lignancies, with partial remis-sion in another 40%.

Further studies are underway to improve treatment tech-niques.

A Japanese cancer researcher at a German university hospital earlier this month announced the results of a study showing Manuka Health’s Bio30 propo-lis extract suppressed NF1 neu-rofi bromatosis, a type of tumour affecting one in 3000 people.

By Cathy AsplinIan Vincent literally has the world

at his feet. The Te Awamutu dancer, musician

and now actor has had two signifi cant ‘breaks’ that could well set him on the path of a lucrative performing career.

At just 19 he will be joining the international performance troupe ‘Stomp’ for its European tour later in the year, while next month he has the chance to see himself on the big screen in the premiere of the New Zealand/Singapore co-production ‘The Tattooist’.

The former Te Awamutu College head student is currently back at home after getting the surprise call up from Stomp.

“Initially they wanted me to join them this month, so I had to leave my studies in Wellington. But that date has now been put back to Sep-tember.”

Stomp is a performance show based on rhythm - people with strong per-sonalities use various items (such as rubbish bin lids, brooms, buckets, pipes etc), their hands and feet to cre-ate musical sounds.

Ian had seen Stomp in action late last year when he was at the Welling-ton Performing Arts Centre.

He attended a ‘jam session’ with Stomp and was told he had the oppor-tunity of an audition in the future.

That chance came earlier this year and he headed to Australia to audi-tion at the Sydney Opera House.

As far as he is aware Ian was the only person in the Southern Hemi-sphere to get an audition at that time and he was certainly the youngest.

“They were surprised I was only 18 at the time and said I really needed to be 19 at least.”

When he didn’t hear anything for several weeks, Ian felt he probably had missed that opportunity.

But, about three months later he was contacted in Wellington with the news that they were looking for more performers and asked if he would he be interested in joining them.

That offer was quickly accepted and Ian will become the ‘baby’ of the British based Stomp performance troupe. (There is also a troupe based in the USA.)

When he joins the group in Europe he will initially be training eight hours a day, seven days a week - for two months - before performing live with the group.

BIG SCREEN ROLEWhile at the Wellington Perform-

ing Arts Centre, Ian’s tutors encour-aged him to attend a casting call for a fi lm company that was looking for Samoan performers.

He says he was incredibly nervous, as he had never been to an acting audition.

“I’ve never tried anything like that before - I wasn’t sure what they wanted and to be honest I was freak-ing out really.”

“I’ve never tried anything like that before - I wasn’t sure what they wanted and to be honest I was freak-ing out really.”

While he didn’t have experience as an actor, his performance ability and Samoan heritage landed him the part.

The Tattooist is a supernatural thriller starring Jason Behr (The Grudge) and Mia Blake (No 2)

The story revolves around Ameri-can tattoo artist Jake Sawyer (Behr), a global wanderer who explores eth-nic themes in his designs.

He discovers the ancient tradition of Samoan tatau and is taken on a ‘devastating journey into Pacifi c mysticism’.

The fi lm also stars David Fane (Sione’s Wedding) and Robbie Ma-gasiva (Sione’s Wedding, Stickmen). It was fi lmed in Auckland and Sin-gapore.

Ian’s role in the fi lm is as a super-

natural spirit, that seeks revenge. Covered in Japanese kabuki paint,

with nail extensions, white contact lenses with red veins, shaved head and prosthetics valued at $30,000 - $50,000 it was an experience Ian’s not likely to forget.

“It took around fi ve hours to get made up each day and a further two hours to take it all off. Some days I had to have three showers to get rid of it.”

Ian has seen a trailer for the mov-ie and initially didn’t think he would be in the country to see the premiere in Auckland, but the change in date with Stomp should allow him to at-tend.

While at home in Te Awamutu he has some precious spare time, so has been helping his sister Leeza with her dance classes and working with her group from Te Awamutu College as they prepare a routine for the sec-ondary schools ‘Search for the Stars’ competition.

Head start with hearing By Cathy Asplin

In the past most chil-dren didn’t have their hearing screened until they started school.

For children who had problems this was often too late. But now they can have their hearing screened when they are just a few days old.

Waikato Newborn Hearing Screening Programme manager Lynne Forsman of Te Awamutu says this means any problems can be addressed straight away.

“Infants with early hearing impairment, who are identifi ed and rehabilitated before the age of six months, then have the potential to develop normal speech and language skills.”

In contrast the school-aged screening programmes meant that children often had been struggling with a hearing impairment for many years and prob-ably had already had their language develop-ment delayed.

Mrs Forsman says the Waikato District Health Board’s Newborn Hear-ing Screening Pro-gramme has actually been operating since February 2004.

“It began essentially as a hospital-based programme and then expanded to cover two major birthing units in Hamilton.

“In October 2005 this was expanded to include the rural areas of Thames and Taumarunui.

“The Ministry of Health then offered funding for us to extend our rural programme to enable us to cover the rest of the Waikato District Health Board area.

“So now this in-cludes Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, Morrinsville, Matamata, Huntly and Tokoroa.”

SCREENING NOW AVAILABLE HERE

Te Awamutu is visit-ed by Newborn Hearing Screeners on the fi rst and third Thursdays of the month to screen newborn babies.

Clinics are held at Matariki Maternity Unit (from 10.00am - 11.30am) and the Te Awamutu Plun-ket rooms (12.30pm - 1.30pm).

“We also screen ba-bies while in hospital.

The procedure is quick, painless and in many cases will be done while the baby sleeps.”

Screening nearly 90% of the approximately 4500 babies born in the region annually, this is the largest and most comprehensive Univer-sal Neonatal Hearing Screening and Early Intervention (UNHSEI) programme established to date in New Zealand.

MILESTONESince screening began

in February 2004, over 12,000 babies have been screened with 24 babies being diagnosed as hav-ing some degree of hear-ing loss.

“Of these 24 babies 14 have permanent bilateral hearing loss. Three babies have gone on to have cochlear im-plants.”

Waikato is one of three DHB’s undertak-ing newborn hearing screening, as part of a three-year roll-out of the national Univer-sal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.

The national pro-gramme aims to offer screening to newborns across the whole coun-try by 2009.

AWARD FINALISTThe Waikato New-

born Hearing Screening Programme has been named as a fi nalist in this year’s New Zea-land Health Innovation awards to be announced at a gala dinner in Oc-tober.

By Cathy AsplinTe Awamutu College continued

their unbeaten run in Waikato 1st XV rugby pool play with a convinc-ing 46-5 win over Forest View.

Coach Bruce Bain described the win as one of the most comprehen-sive team performances of the year.

“Our forwards dominated the sig-nifi cantly larger Forest View pack and that was the foundation for our win.”

Flanker Cohen Masson was a standout player among a forward pack that played with structure and passion.

The wealth of possession allowed the Te Awamutu backs to play expansive rugby, leading to seven tries.

Second fi ve, Simon Chick scored the fi rst three tries and was a con-stant threat throughout the game.

Centre William Sams celebrated his 50th game for the 1st XV with a brace of tries and winger Matthew Retemeyer crashed over to score his try in the corner.

Andrew Powell also scored after a fi ne 60m individual effort and the remaining points came from the boot of Powell.

Coach Bain says the boys now have a couple of weeks off before coming back after the holidays to face St Peters and Cambridge to complete pool play.

“We are still on track to reach our goal of making the semi fi nal playoffs, but a win in one of our next two games is essential to be sure of qualifying.”

The game at St Peters will be followed by a home game against Cambridge.

Hooker held in high regardBy Colin Thorsen

Te Awamutu Sports’ outstanding young hooker Simon Kay could not have wished for a better time to launch his career in Waikato premier club rugby.

The 20-year-old has been lucky to have such quality foundations either side of him in his debut season.

Kieran Rampage and Adrian Tucker were his ‘book ends’ before making way for the vastly more experienced Nathan White and Joe Edwards.

Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports’ coach Kerry Eynon rates his young rake highly.

“Simon (Kay) has huge potential. As well as being a good runner, adept at stealing the ball and a good thrower, he reads a game of rugby really well.

“You can always rely on him performing

at a high level. He has a real fi ghting at-titude, always giving 100 per cent to the team’s cause.”

Eynon says competition for hooker be-tween Kay and Shaun Muir is bringing out the best in them.

Kay is a Waikato age group representa-tive and Muir a member of the Waikato Academy.

Eynon took Kay to Sports’ pre-season camp in Taranaki last year but could not guarantee him a spot in the 22-strong squad on their return home.

In order to get game time, Kay played for Hamilton Marist under-21s in 2006 but was always coming back to play for his hometown club.

Ramage and Tucker are exciting young prospects, with Ramage one of the form props in Waikato club rugby over the past

two seasons.White is now fi rmly entrenched as No 1

prop in Waikato/Chiefs land. Joseph Phillip Robert ‘Joe’ Edwards was

born on September 30, 1972 at Opotiki. He played 66 fi rst class games, scoring

seven tries, as hooker for Bay of Plenty from 1991 to 1997. During that period he played for four clubs - Tauranga Sports, Judea, Opotiki United and Te Teko.

The national selectors had their eye on him. He was a New Zealand Colt in 1990 and made the New Zealand RFU Presi-dent’s XV in 1992.

He was hooker for New Zealand Maori in their 26-19 win over Tonga Barbarians at Nukualofa in 1996 and was a New Zea-land Maori triallist in 1997. He spent the last six years playing in Scotland before joining Te Awamutu Sports.

GREAT learning curve for young Te Awamutu Sports’ hooker Simon Kay (left) playing alongside the vastly experienced former Bay of Plenty rake Joe Edwards. 1840714AD

Hamilton OB repay TA Sports in kind

Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports’ hopes of making the semi-fi nals in the Has-well Catley Trophy round took a nose dive when beaten 19-10 by Hamilton Old Boys.

The local team looked only a shadow of the side that recently hammered the same opposition by 40 points in the preliminary round.

Sports must now win one of their two remaining games to have a chance of making the playoffs in the Waikato premier rugby champion-ship.

Peter Bain reports that Old Boys went into the game at Albert Park on Saturday lying at the bottom of the points table and desperate for the win.

Conditions were very heavy un-derfoot, making handling diffi cult. Sports spent much of the fi rst half defending and on the wrong end of the penalty count.

Old Boys cashed in with three penalties to lead 9-0. They increased their lead to 19-3 with two second

half tries.Sports opened their account with

a Waylon Tangohau penalty and had the fi nal say with a length of the fi eld try to prop Lewis Niven.

Replacement wing Josh Butler took the ball on his fi nger tips, kicked down fi eld and toed the ball ahead. From the maul on the goal line, Lewis crashed over.

Sports’ forward pack was strong all day, often having the better of their opposites at scrum time.

Number-eight Shaun Higginson was a tower of strength both on at-tack and defence.

Hayden Wolfsbauer and Ray Stowe were the pick of the backs until Stowe suffered his second broken arm of the season.

All fi ve senior teams are playing at home this Saturday. The senior As and senior Bs host Hautapu, the un-der-21s meet Hamilton Old Boys, the under-19s clash with top-of-the-table Hamilton Marist and the under-85kgs tackle Otorohanga.

Lee bound for GermanyBy Colin Thorsen

There is nothing ‘under arm’ about Te Awamutu equestrian rider Trisha Lee turn-ing Australian for a couple of weeks this month.

Quite the opposite in fact.

Trisha has taken up the ‘opportunity of a lifetime’ to go on an Australian Young Rider Tour of Germany.

She has no Australian connections - it came about by way of an in-vitation to Kiwi riders to make up numbers in their tour party.

There is an ironic twist to the story though - Trisha was already going to Germany before the offer was made.

She had met German girl Kath-erina Moeller at Sacred Heart Girls College, over here on an exchange. She got to know her at German camp - Trisha had been learning German for four years.

It turned out that she was just as dressage mad as Trisha.

They became good mates and Kath-erina spent quite a bit of time at the Lee household, visiting with Trisha and riding their horses.

Katherina invited Trisha to a re-turn visit to Germany.

“We thought why not, so we booked her to stay with Katherina’s family in Freiburg for a couple of weeks,” Trisha’s mum Elizabeth told the Courier.

“But no sooner had we paid for the ticket, we received an email from the New Zealand Young Rider group ask-ing for expressions of interest in join-ing the Australian tour.

“Since Trisha was already going

to be over in Germany we thought it was an opportunity too good to miss.”

Mrs Lee says they registered their interest and were advised that they would be told if she was selected.

“Eventually we got the go ahead, she was in the team.”

One of Trisha’s train-ers (Ben Conn) will be in Germany while she is there.

He has arranged for her to spend a morning at Isabel Werth’s stable.

“That is the riding equivalent of a soccer player being invited to spend the morning with David Beckham.”

Other tour highlights include at-tending the European junior and young rider dressage championships from July 11-15.

She will visit horse centres around Warendorf from July 16-20, including the German national training centre, Wesphalian state stud, watch some training and have some dressage lessons.

The tour party travel to Freuden-berg on July 20 to attend the Euro-pean Pony Championships which include dressage, showjumping and eventing competition.

Trisha is looking forward to meet-ing the other New Zealand and Aus-tralian tour members.

“I guess it won’t hurt to be known as an Aussie for a couple of weeks,” she quipped.

Te Awamutu Saddlery has come to the party, sponsoring a raffl e to help fi nance Trisha’s trip to Germany.

The Saddlery fi rm sponsored $625 of goods for her to raffl e.

Cyclists taking on Australia’s best

By Colin ThorsenFour of Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club’s

younger brigade get an opportunity to test their ability against their Australian counterparts when they compete in the Tour of Canberra at the weekend.

Maddy Brunton will represent New Zealand in the girls’ under-17 tour.

She is encouraged by the fact that her club-mate Rushlee Buchanan upstaged the best under-17 fe-male road cyclists in Australia, winning the two-day tour by 52 seconds in 2004.

“It’s great knowing that a Te Awamutu rider has won the tour previously but Rushlee is an excep-tional talent.

“I’ll give it my best shot and see what happens.”Brunton enhanced her rapidly growing reputa-

tion fi nishing third in the three-day junior Canter-bury Tour last month.

Accompanying her on the fl ight to Australia on Wednesday will be four under-15 riders from the Waikato Sports Cycling Academy Development team.

They are Hayden McCormick, Jack Loader, Laura Gretton (Te Awamutu) and Nic Sutton (New Plymouth).

Academy spokesperson, Errol Newlands told the Courier that these riders have been identifi ed as having the ability to push for higher honours.
