YOUR LETTERS

Holy sacrament with environment

Thanks for support from votersI would like to thank all of the voters who voted for me in the recent

elections.I was very pleased with the outcome and felt you were all telling

me I am going in the right direction to achieve more for Te Awamutu and Kihikihi.

Some of the planning and spade work has been done. Now we need to consult with our community, listen to you and get

it right. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have an issue that

needs attention. You all know by now, I will try to fi nd a solution for you. Thank you.

HAZEL BARNESTe Awamutu Councillor

I enjoyed reading the sugges-tions on how to make your wedding memorable in the Te Awamutu Courier on November 6.

However, I would like to en-courage everyone planning on releasing balloons, butterfl ies or birds to symbolise starting your new life together to reconsider and celebrate in a way that won’t have a detrimental effect on our environment.

Balloons released into the sky generally end up in our waterways, clogging stormwater drain and can be a choking hazard for marine life and birds.

Although there is information available saying latex balloons break down in the environment, one New Zealand company, The Warehouse found to their embar-rassment that this is not neces-sarily true.

A launch of 13,000 balloons to celebrate The Warehouse’s 25th birthday in May 2007, was touted as “environmentally safe” by say-ing in a media release that all balloons were 100 percent latex and fully biodegradable: “They will

ascend to 25,000 feet, freeze, shat-ter disperse and decompose.”

Hundreds of balloons washed up on the beaches of the Hauraki Gulf instead.

Birds, unless they are homing pigeons and are trained to fl y to a home base, may end up as food for predators, or take up residence and displace our native birds.

Check that there will be food sources for butterfl ies once re-leased, as if you are planning a wedding in native bush, for ex-ample, there is no food there for Monarch butterfl ies (the most commonly released species at spe-cial events).

There are many more environ-mentally friendly alternatives such as: lighting a candle together to symbolise your new life planting a tree to symbolise growing in your new life together blowing bubbles is a fun way to involve the whole congregation

Clifford, canine mates visit children

By Cathy AsplinClifford the Big Red Dog was the pre-

fect character to launch Te Awamutu Playcentre Dog Day - and he loved it so much he’s coming back to be part of their fl oat for the Christmas parade.

Scholastic’s ‘Clifford’ has been around since 1962 teaching children life lessons through books, so his ap-pearance at the dog day was particu-larly fi tting.

Te Awamutu Playcentre public rela-tions offi cer Leigh Gleeson says the day was a chance for children to learn more about dogs and their behaviour around them.

WDC Animal Control Offi cer Helen McLean was on hand to explain safety guidelines to children and their par-ents.

“The dangers that ag-gressive dogs in the com-munity present to children are obvious. However, many dog bites and attacks on children often occur in their home with the family dog.

“While such attacks can seem unprovoked, most dogs will actually have shown signs of stress lead-ing up to an attack. These can go undetected by par-ents.

“Common sense and su-pervision will help avoid most attacks in the home.

“Outside the home it is important to teach chil-

Dog owners no longer able to care for their spaniel, pointer or labrador are being urged to contact Corrections.

National Crime Prevention Manager Tony Coyle would like owners of all three breeds to call the Department before contacting their vet or the pound.

“We’re always on the lookout for dogs with potential to be trained

and we know hunting and retriev-ing breeds are ideal,” Mr Coyle says.

“Corrections’ need for good drug dogs will be ongoing and if that demand can be met with dogs no longer wanted by their owners, all the better.”

Demand for specialist drug, fi re-arm and bomb detection dogs has risen dramatically since 9/11.

The New Zealand Police, New Zealand Customs, Aviation Secu-rity Services, MAF and Correc-tions are some of many agencies now using dogs to detect risks to the community.

“If I think a dog may not be ideal for detecting drugs I may well refer it to one of these agencies,” Mr Coyle says. “We’re all aware of each others needs and as much as

we can, we try to help each other.”Three of Corrections 12 drug

dogs came from the Rotorua Pound - OD (Waikeria Prison) who had cost his original owners so much money in ‘wandering’ fi nes they asked the pound to try and re-house him; Roxy (Wanganui Prison) who it’s believed ended up in the pound for similar reasons and Flash, now detecting drugs at

the newly opened Spring Hills Cor-rections Facility.

Anyone faced with a similar di-lemma to OD and Roxy’s owners is asked to contact the dog handler at their local prison.

Corrections drug dogs undergo eight weeks training with the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre at Trentham followed up by ongoing, top-up training.

Demand for drug dogs on the increase

dren not to approach a strange dog. Children should also be shown how to stand still and be quiet if an unfamil-iar dog approaches.”

Dianne Gray from the SPCA also visited Playcentre with a number of ‘orphan’ puppies that need to be re-homed. Children also learned more about how to care for animals.

Mrs Gleeson says the dog safety theme is being continued for the Play-centre fl oat in conjunction with Waipa District Council.

“We are planning a fabulous fl oat, with children doing some of the things they like to do at Playcentre - dressing up and role playing - while conveying a very important message about playing safe around dogs.”

Non-violent stance

Women’s Refuge is urging men to show their complete con-demnation of violence against women during events over the next week marking White Ribbon Day.

White Ribbon Day, November 25, was started in 1991 by a men’s movement group in Canada and has

been offi cially adopted by the United Nations as its International Day for the Elimina-tion of Violence against Women.

Men are encour-aged to wear a white ribbon to show they do not tolerate or con-done violence towards women, and Women’s Refuge is one of many

Government and non-government agencies supporting it again this year.

Last year, police attended more than 70,000 callouts to fam-ily violence incidents.

The Chief Executive of the National Col-lective of Independent Women’s Refuges, Heather Henare, says

the toll violence is tak-ing on women, children and families is com-pletely unacceptable.

“Every week hun-dreds of women are suffering abuse and violence, and tragi-cally one of them dies every fi ve weeks at the hands of her partner or former partner.”

Your new Board has its fi rst meeting this week and if they continue as they started you can look forward to some ac-tion.

We passed a resolution to Council to look at tidying up the Memorial Hall in Kihikihi so that the public can use it.

It is just a waste as it is and we are sure there are many dif-ferent users who would benefi t once it is cleaned up.

The embankment, north end of Kihikihi, has plants growing out over the footpath making it dangerous to walk along so we have recommended to Council that they be removed.

You will soon see the footpath along Kihikihi Road being con-tinued up to Herbert Street. Where-to-from there will be a bit of a challenge but we will leave that to the engineers.

Council is aiming to have a footpath on at least one side of every street in Te Awamutu and Kihikihi. Board members will be on the lookout to detect where this has not happened and making sure those streets receive priority in the next round.

We are also on the lookout to rectify incorrect spelling of streets and roads in our area which includes Kakepuku.

We discussed the problem of rubbish around popular shop-ping areas and car parks and whose responsibility it is to keep the place clean and tidy. It seems we have to have another blitz on the untidy folk who buy takeaways and biff the contain-

ers out the car window or, if walking, throw the rubbish on the footpath.

Maybe the folk who sell take-aways could have a sign in their business place asking people to be tidy kiwis.

It is an offence to cast rub-bish so maybe a few fi nes might work, but we have to catch the culprit fi rst.

Has everyone noticed the great cleanup of graffi ti in Kihikihi?

The Waikeria work party did the job and we would say thank you very much, and look out to offenders should they mess up the area again.

The Board will again look at how we can be pro-active in keeping graffi ti from view.

Board members have will-ingly accepted their role as representatives on many of our voluntary organisations. By co-ordinating our town and around we can achieve more and we look forward to working for you over the next three years.

As usual, public forum is there for you at 7pm second Tuesday of the month at the Council chambers.

Board eyes new projects

By Community Board Council representative Hazel Barnes.

Trust Waikato has announced that in 2008 it will move from one to three funding rounds per year.

It’s a signifi cant change for the Trust and one that chief execu-tive, Bev Gatenby believes will better serve Waikato community organisations.

“Many groups have talked to us

about the diffi culty of only being able to apply to Trust Waikato in May each year. We believe a three round funding model will come as a welcome change.”

Groups will now have the fl exibility of applying to Trust Waikato in February, June or September.

“The beauty of this system is

that they can apply when it best suits their funding needs.”

The new rounds will close on February 22, 2008, June 13, 2008 and September 19, 2008. Trust Waikato can only donate to a group once per cal-endar year. For more informa-tion visit the Trust’s website - www.trustwaikato.co.nz

By Dean TaylorEnglishman Neil

Bauernfeind came to New Zealand to enjoy a better family life-style when his son was born fi ve years ago. He believes the shift to Te Awamutu from Auckland may just have completed that journey.

Mr Bauernfeind was recently appointed deputy principal at Te Awamutu College and says he has been made to feel very welcome here, even after such a short time.

He came from Mas-sey High School (where he was a colleague of former Te Awamutu College DP Jenny Ba-ber) which has a roll of 2500. Mr Bauernfeind says already he is ap-preciating the much more intimate atmos-phere of Te Awamutu College where you can easily get to know the students.

His teaching training started at home where he completed six years at university in Wales, completing his Masters degree majoring his history.

He met his New Zea-land born wife Berna-dette in London when they both started at the same school on the same day.

A South Waikato girl, who went to high school in Hamilton and Waikato University, she had travelled to Britain on her OE and

came to the school on the off-chance of a job.

A position had be-come available at the last minute and she was duly employed.

The couple were friends for a number of years before romance blossomed - then it was only a year before they married.

Mr Bauernfeind says moving to New Zealand was a great move and he is not missing the British lifestyle at all.

Luckily his parents visit annually.

He says he was al-

most fated to apply for the Te Awamutu position, with his wife’s Waikato roots and nothing but praise for the school from Ms Baber.

A highlight right from the start was the powhiri, a unique and emotional experience of being accompanied by his former colleagues to a welcome onto his new school.

It is his fi rst deputy principal job, but he came from being a Dean at Massey High School and is enjoying the pastoral aspect of

his new role.He also has respon-

sibilities for the centre of Excellence, Careers and Gateway, the team of Deans and disci-pline.

As a history teacher he is enjoying being in the classroom, teach-ing social studies to his Year 9 class.

And it is not only school life that is agreeing with him, Mr Bauernfeind says set-tling into the Waikato has been great, a posi-tive step for him and his family.

is a chance for men to make it absolutely clear that they won’t tolerate this behaviour, and to make that stand both publicly and in their own homes.”

“That’s also the type of behaviour and mes-sage we expect them to be carrying 365 days a year, not just on this one day.”

Ms Henare says men that provide role models for their sons and other young men, whether it is on the sports fi eld, in the home or in the workplace.

“This places a respon-sibility on them to not only be mindful of their own words and actions, but how they might be seen and modelled by others.”

This year more than 300 thousand ribbons have been produced by inmates at Wellington Prison for distribution to the public.

They will be handed out in the streets, as well as at a number of events being held in communities through-out the country.

Mahuika House is also distributing White Ribbons, or they can be collected from 91 Albert Park Drive (ph 871 8132).

Leasa Pearson, Hamilton Re-lay For Life co-ordinator, says the relay is the Cancer Society’s fun event of the year.

“Last year a record 150 teams of nearly 2000 people joined us at Claudelands Events Centre for Relay For Life raising over $300,000 for cancer support services in the local area.”

However, she says Relay For Life is much more than just a fundraiser.

“It is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the lives of cancer

survivors, support those cur-rently facing cancer and to hon-our those we have lost.”

Relay For Life is a worldwide event and every year more than fi ve million people take part. Now into its sixth year in Hamilton, Relay For Life involves teams either walking or running non-stop around an athletic track for 20-hours.

“A member from every team must be on the track at all times but a continual party atmos-phere on the sidelines means

those on track receive constant encouragement.

“The relay is open to every-one - businesses, schools, clubs, groups, organisations and friends and families. We aim for people to have fun and en-joy themselves as well as raise awareness of cancer in our com-munity.”

The tent village at Claude-lands will come to life from 2pm on Saturday, March 1 with the fi nal crossing of the line at 10am, Sunday March 2.

‘3’ provides modern twist to Christian bookshopIN BUSINESS CIRCLES

Only tiny pockets of mice remain in the 3400-hectare Maungatautari eco-logical island reserve, following a third application of aerial poison baits over most of the area.

Almost 1700 tracking tunnels spread across the mountain show a few isolated populations of the rodents are still there, and major efforts to eradicate them are now being made.

Jim Mylchreest, chief executive of the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust (MEIT) said staff were concentrating on laying poison by hand in areas surround-ing the widely-scattered sites where mouse prints were recorded.

“It’s possible some of these mice al-ready had lethal doses of the aerial poison when they made the tracks, but we’re making every move we can to ensure we get the last of them,” Mr Myl-chreest says.

“A number of their footprints were re-corded in areas where we didn’t spread aerial bait because it was close to farm-land where lambing was occurring.

“Extra monitoring lines are being cre-ated so we can be confi dent that any survivors will be detected and then eradicated.”

But the good news was there were no signs of any predators such as rats,

stoats, cats, hedgehogs or possums, Mr Mylchreest says.

“It looks like we’ve got rid of all of them.

“We’re putting eight Judas goats into the area soon, just in case there are one or two goats still in there, although we haven’t seen any sign of a goat for sev-eral months.”

Judas goats are fi tted with bright or-ange collars and radio transmitters so they can be tracked.

Wild goats will be attracted to the Judas goats or vice versa, and the wild goats will then be eliminated by hunt-ers.

Few mice left on Maungatautari

MODERN TWIST: Beth Elder (daughter of shop owners Monique and Ron Elder) places new t-shirts on the racks, while an ‘Xtreme’ biking DVD plays on the big screen (left). 326079AD

Forget everything you know about visit-ing a traditional Chris-tian bookshop.

‘3’ is nothing like that and offers much more than rows of dusty books.

It has bright colours, stylish design and modern products to appeal to youth or the young at heart.

When you walk in it has music playing, while a wide screen TV plays Xtreme Sport DVD’s like dirt biking, base jumping, BMX and kite boarding.

The shop has been created by Te Awamutu couple Ron and Mo-nique Elder.

They chose ‘3’ as the name for the Ro-che Street store as it is a very signifi cant number in the Bible.

“The most obvious is the Trinity - Fa-ther, Son, Holy Spirit - another is Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day.

“We got the initial inspiration and it all came together really quickly.”

Instore they have t-shirts, caps and hoodies that are imported from the United States.

“They’re all bright, fun and out there! Each has a special message that brings truth and glory to God.

“The music we stock is mostly modern rock to hard rock - labels like ‘Solid State’ and ‘Tooth and Nail’ along with some rap.

“Now our young peo-ple don’t have to wait

until the annual Para-chute festival to get the music they like.”

The couple also plan to have a stall at Para-chute (January 25-28).

“We will be running a promotion until Christ-

mas to win a single weekend pass to the Parachute Festival 08.”

The shop also stocks a fun collection of phone charms and jewellery with plenty of items suitable for

Christmas. And - yes - ‘3’ does

stock some inspiration-al books and Bibles.

For further details phone 870 3300 or call into to the store at 21 Roche Street.

One woman who visited the show at St Pat’s Hall, who had been to rose shows throughout the world, rated it one of the best displays she had seen anywhere.

Favourable recent weather meant blooms were of a high quality.

Kickboxers tackling best in the world

Two competitors and two offi cials from Te Awamutu fl y out with the New Zealand Kick-boxing team for the WAKO World Champi-onships in Portugal on Saturday.

The local quartet are fi ghters Clint King and Nick Feisst, assistant team coach Neil Fynn (Kihikihi) and team manager/coach Rick Dobson.

It will be the third international trip this year for the multi-tal-ented Clint King.

“Clint’s abilities and willingness to fi ght in whatever tournament he can has always impressed me,” says Dobson.

“He not only fi ghts well and very fair, he enjoys the fi ghts.”

Dobson says win or lose King is always smiling.

“He was selected on merit. He is an adapt-able fi ghter, able to work within the differ-ent rules structures, so we believe WAKO (NZ) are very lucky to have him on the team.”

Dobson says King just loves competing, entering all the WAKO semi-contact tourna-ments he can - usually winning or featuring in the fi nals.

This year, following his trip to the US, he fought in the WAKO New Zealand ‘Top

Fighter’ tournament, winning two national titles.

Feisst lives in Cam-bridge but trains at Phantom Kickboxing, Te Awamutu.

Included among Fynn’s coaching feats this year was schooling up former Te Awamutu boxing and Peace Cup rugby representative Quentin Wallace for a win over John Hapi in his full contact kickboxing debut at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events cen-tre in September.

Fynn would like to thank the local com-munity, Kickboxing members, friends and families who helped raise funds for the New Zealand representa-tives to travel to Por-tugal - donating items for raffl es, and buying/selling tickets.

The quartet land back in Auckland on December 5, although some of the team are staying on overseas for a break in Europe and Egypt, while others are going to China.

Mikkelson bolter in NZ Sevens squadTietjens liked what he saw at Albert Park

By Colin ThorsenHas Gordon Tietjens pulled

another master stroke by pluck-ing Hinuera’s Tim Mikkelson from the Te Awamutu Sports Sevens into his New Zealand training squad?

Year in and year out the na-tional coach has shown a knack for spotting young talent and turning them into world beaters.

Mikkelson is a raw 21-year-old, who impressed Tietjens with his support play and potential on both attack and defence playing for Hinuera in the All Season Air sponsored Albert Park tourna-ment on Saturday.

The Waikato University stu-dent is one of 18 New Zealand Sevens hopefuls at a camp in Mount Maunganui this week preparing for the fi rst World Cup tournament in Dubai.

NZ Sevens manager Ross Ev-erest told the Courier that the team of 12 to fl y out for Dubai will not be named until late to-night or tomorrow morning.

Two other players on show at the Te Awamutu Sevens, James Kamana (Fraser Tech) and Albert Vuilivuli (Hamilton Old Boys), were already in the New Zealand training squad.

Hamilton Old Boys were clearly the best team on the day, deservedly taking out the cham-pionship with a 24-5 win over Te Rapa Porter Hire.

The star-studded Hamilton OB line-up included such quality players as New Zealand sevens representative Vuilivuli, touch international Ruamai Erueti, New Zealand Schools’ represent-ative Murray Iti and Waikato NPC players Jared Payne and Henry Speight.

Tries to Payne, Dwane Stewart and David McLean saw Hamil-ton OB holding a 19-0 halftime advantage.

Te Rapa rallied early in the second half, stringing several phases together for Tony Mi-haera to score.

They continued to apply pres-sure but it was Hamilton OB who had the fi nal say with McLean dotting down for his second try right on fulltime.

Old Boys’ speedster Henry Speight won the tournament’s best back award, while Te Rapa’s

Ray Allen was named best for-ward. Allen played loose forward for the Manawatu NPC team in 2007.

The big upset of the day was the elimination of Hautapu in the quarter-fi nals, thumped 33-7 by Hamilton OB.

Hautapu (gunning for their fourth title) were the hot favour-ites, having recently won the Waikato Sevens.

Hamilton OB then swept aside Mount Maunganui 31-14 in the semi-fi nals.

Te Rapa were equally impres-sive with an emphatic 43-7 vic-tory over Waitemata Pacifi ka in their quarter fi nal.

They were then fully extended by Te Awamutu Sports Green in the semi-fi nals, prevailing 21-14 to end the host’s chance of a third straight championship fi nal.

Te Awamutu Sports Green produced their best form in the quarter-fi nals to eliminate Hin-uera (runners-up in the Waikato Sevens) 38-12.

The young Te Awamutu Sports Gold team ‘boxed above their weight’ putting up better scores than some senior clubs from around the Waikato against vastly more experienced and

bigger teams from Auckland and North Harbour.

They were only beaten three tries to one against Waitemata and four tries to one by Massey - a great effort considering there was not one senior player in the Gold team.

In the bowl fi nal, North Har-bour’s East Coast Bays beat Te Rapa Paradise 24-7, while the plate fi nal saw Northcote beat Massey 24-7.

Three Te Awamutu Sports’ players have been included in the Waikato squad of 26 to con-test the Red Bull Provincial Sev-ens in Auckland on December 8.

They are Jono Armstrong, Thomas Mahutonga and Ryan Meacheam.

Mahutonga has been in Aus-tralia for the past year playing league for the Manly Sea Eagles under-19 side.

Armstrong is a member of the Waikato rugby academy and Meacheam has returned to Waikato rugby after a season with the academy in Nelson Bays.

The Waikato squad will be reduced to 15 to prepare for the Bay of Plenty Sevens at Mount Maunganui on January 3.

BIRD HAS FLOWN: Tim Mikkelson (left), who was named in the New Zealand Sevens training squad, has his hands full catching elusive Te Awamutu Sports Green’s Johnny Bird (who also had a standout tournament).

Cycle win boosts wedding funds

By Colin ThorsenNo one begrudged Eliot Crowther collecting

the $1000 cheque for winning the second annual Maungatautari 100km Classic Cycle Race.

The Morrinsville 20-year-old is getting married in four weeks.

Crowther warmed up for Sunday’s Classic sit-ting one of his nine exams in Auckland on Friday - he is studying to be a chiropractor.

“The Classic couldn’t have been more timely for me, I needed time out from the exams,” says the national road champion.

Crowther was impressed by the course, prize

money and organisation of the Classic, jointly or-ganised by Te Awamutu Rotary and Te Awamutu Sports Cycling clubs.

“It’s hardly surprising the Classic attracts such a quality fi eld with such generous prize money up for grabs.”

The groom-to-be was surprised by the challeng-ing fi rst 60km of the course, followed by a ‘nice fl at’ last part.

His winning time of 2.25.33 was nearly three minutes faster than Tim Gudsell recorded in the inaugural event last year.

Crowther and Te Awamutu’s Peter Rennie set the early pace in a two-man breakaway.

At one stage they held a two minute lead over the chasing peleton.

The margin was rapidly reduced to 45 seconds by Te Awamutu Sports’ Cameron Holt and two-times Te Awamutu Open winner Justin Kerr, who joined them after 60km.

The quartet worked smoothly as a team, shar-ing the ‘donkey’ work out front, to extend their lead to 70 seconds nearing Roto-O-Rangi.

It came down to a sprint fi nish on Park Road, with Crowther just pipping Kerr, followed closely by a tiring Rennie and Holt.

Holt had made a bold move 800m out but was caught shortly after Marist Park.

A spectacular bunch sprint fi nish involving the main peleton of 20 riders was won by Te Awamutu Sports’ Sheldon Gorter, who placed fi fth at 49 seconds. Te Awamutu Sports’ Nathan Bunn was sixth and Geoff Burndred seventh.

A second big bunch, headed by the fi rst two woman home, Olympian Melissa Holt and one of New Zealand’s rising stars Rushlee Buchanan, fi nished in 2.36.32.

Both Holt and Buchanan are members of Te Awamutu Sports Club.

Holt is preparing for Sunday’s Harbour Cross-ing in Auckland - race one in the Sovereign Ocean Swim Series - while Buchanan has entered the elite women’s criterium to be run in conjunction with Saturday’s 160km Round Lake Taupo Clas-sic cycle ride.

The prize for fi rst under-17 rider home in the 100km Classic went to Te Awamutu’s hugely promising Hayden McCormick.

The 30km Fun Ride, run in conjunction with the Maungatautari Classic, was won by Te Awamutu teenager Scott Creighton in 50.23, from club-mates Maddy Brunton, 50.26, and Marcel Te Brake, 51.33.

The tandem team of James and Craig Allen were fourth, Sean Fleck fi fth and Nicola McCor-mick sixth, all in 51.33, followed by Arie Brogden, 51.50.

The top three U17 riders were Creighton, Brun-ton and Fleck.

Pirongia Sports draw

A Pirongia team caught three players short dealt to Thames by 60 runs in Waikato Valley cricket.

With wedding commitments reducing Les Harrison Transport Pirongia to nine players on the eve of their game, the team was on the verge of defaulting - but upholding its proud tradition of no defaults in their history, Pirongia were deter-mined to put up a fi ght.

A last minute injury further reduced their ranks to eight play-ers on the morning of the game and the writing seemed to be on the wall.

Given the option to bat fi rst, Pirongia built a strong base with solid partnerships from captain Richard Douch (75) opener Dave Pickering (29) and Mark Harrison (40).

Richard Parsons chimed in with 25 and Hamish Crooks 44 helping Pirongia post a formidable total of 246.

It looked even more substantial when Pirongia grabbed an early wicket.

Thames rallied, marching through to 102/2 at drinks. How-ever, the old adage of runs on the board began to kick in.

Panicky running saw the down-fall of the dangerous Dev Sangha, run out going for a suicidal single.

Pressure began to mount on the sea-siders.

Douch introduced his part time dibbly dobbly bowlers to put the screws on the middle order, with startling results. Parsons (3-21) and Harrison (2-31) ripped the heart out of the Thames batting.

Pickering (2-27) then came back to help dismiss Thames for 186, seeing Pirongia through to their

most momentous victory of recent times.

Douch says he was blown away by the spirit his players showed to ‘do the impossible’.

“I was absolutely amazing, a fan-tastic victory to be a part of.”

For the second week on the trot Te Awamutu Sports Green were beaten by one run, this time on Te Aroha Cobras home turf.

The Green team must have fancied their chances after bowl-ing out the potent Cobras batting line-up for 131, with Jared Bayly claiming the outstanding bowling fi gures of 4-17 off 10 overs.

The Cobras, who scored 397/7 the previous week against Pirongia, looked headed for another massive total as their openers blazed their way to 80 in 10 overs.

But the run out of danger man Brendon Revel (147 last week) for 60 saw a dramatic change come over the game. Runs dried up and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Te Awamutu Sports Green then blew a golden opportunity to upset the co-competition leaders as they capitulated for 130. Only opener Sam Stretton (20) and Hamish Forsman (17no) offered any real resistance.

In division two, competition leaders Te Awamutu Sports Gold, minus star players Zak Pratt and Chris Cliff, went down to Hamilton Marist by 52 runs.

Marist scored 201/9, with Grae-me Stewart claiming 2-31.
