Fertil iser Association of India
The Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) is an apex body of all the fertiliser manufacturers inIndia incorporated in 1955. All the fertiliser manufacturers across the country are active
members of the FAI. The Association cooperates actively with the Government of India
(GOI) and acts as an interface between the Industry and the Government by maintaining
close contacts and rapport. At present, 50 Indian fertiliser companies and other
organisations are active members of FAI comprising of the private, public and cooperative
sectors. There are over 140 associate members which include suppliers of technology,
equipment & catalysts, engineering companies, research institutions, etc. besides 30
overseas members and a large number of technical and professional members.
As a part of our multifarious activities, we organize need based programmmes in the areas
of production, maintenance, instrumentation, environment, safety, etc. for the benefit of plant
personnel. Our programmes are attended by all the major fertiliser plants in India and aboard
and are well received. The response to these programmes both from within and outside the
country has been overwhelming and there have been repeated requests for the continuation
of this activity. The fertiliser industries in India and in our neighbouring countries have been
sponsoring their engineers regularly to our programmes.
Introduction
Maintenance, operational efficiency and safety go hand in hand in all industries. Fertiliser
Industry is no exception. The use of complex and sophisticated equipment and systems to
keep pace with rapid technological developments has necessitated the need for advanced and
systematic techniques of operation, maintenance and inspection of the plants.
The aspect is even more important in the fertiliser industry for a variety of reasons. Capital
investment is very large and, therefore, the breakeven point is at a high level of capacity
utilisation. Plant and equipment, spares and components are sophisticated, expensive and
quite often imported. Their replacement, therefore, is difficult and involves long lead-time.
These tend to inhibit high productivity. The magnitude of the problem is compounded by
corrosion, interruption in supply of raw materials, power interruption, and unforeseen
breakdowns. Because of these factors, continuous and efficient operation of the plant is
directly related to the level of efficiency of its maintenance. Improving efficiency of the

plant requires, operating the equipment closer to its design capacity, making predictive
maintenance very important. Last but not the least, maintenance has to be cost effective.
It is in this context that the FAI, in the interest of the fertiliser industry conducts a special
Training Programme for Senior Maintenance Personnel every year so that these men are
better equipped to plan and tackle the maintenance problems effectively.
Objectives
Maintenance is treated in the light of the total environment in which it functions: design,
engineering, logistics, organisation and philosophy for operation and maintenance. With
increasing sophistication, maintenance is concerned with factors such as reliability, availability and maintainability. The objective of the programme is to raise the level of
knowledge and competence of the maintenance personnel, upgrade their skills in order to
enhance their on-the-job efficiency and to prepare them for shouldering higher responsibility.
The programme will provide them an opportunity to exchange information, share experience
and have cross-fertilisation of ideas not only with their counterparts but also with various
experts in different fields. This in turn will lead to improvement in plant productivity.
Course Content
The programme covers practical aspects of various facets of maintenance engineering and
management and is structured laying emphasis on maintenance of critical equipment and
machinery, and methods and practices to improve maintenance efficiency. The subjects to be
covered may be broadly classified into:
Advances in materials of construction,
Maintenance of critical static equipments, e.g. Reactors, waste heat boilers, etc.
Maintenance of HP critical pumps,
Maintenance & Refurnishment of compressors and turbines,
Maintenance problems in ammonia and urea plants,
Effective maintenance management at unit level,
Case studies of inspection, repair, replacement and maintenance practices.

The methods of instruction aim at stimulating individual thinking and maximum involvement
of the participants in the programme. Each participant is required to present a case study.
Emphasis is laid on discussions and sharing of experiences.
Study Visit
A study visit to Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited (ZACL), Ammonia, urea and complex
NP/NPK Fertiliser plant at Goa is also proposed in the programme. Zuari Agro Chemicals
Limited operates a 660 TPD Ammonia plant based on the ICI Steam reforming process. The
initial feedstock of ammonia plant was naphtha which has been switched over to natural gas
in early 2013. The Urea plant is a single stream plant and utilises a Mitsui Toatsu total
recycle- C process. The plant has a capacity of 1,140 metric tonnes per day.
Zuari also operates two streams of NP/NPK complex fertiliser plants are based on slurry
granulation process utilising pipe reactor technology and manufactures various grades of
NP/NPK complex fertilisers. Plant A produces grades such as 28:28:0 (Uramphos), 18:46:0
(Samrat), 19:19:19 (Sampurna), and 14:35:14 (Sampatti) while NPK B plant manufactures
Di Ammonium Phosphate.
Faculty
The faculty consists of practising experts drawn from the fertiliser industry, engineering
companies, vendors and specialised institutions.
Duration
The duration of the programme is 6 working days (5 nights) including the study visit. The
programme is scheduled from the evening of Sunday the 1stJune 2014 (lunch) to the 6thJune
2014 with Breakfast.
The participants are expected to check-in at the hotel by about mid-day of i.e afternoon on 1 st
June 2014 and are to checkout by mid-day on 6 thJune 2014 (stay for 5 nights). Charges for
extra stay will have to be paid by the participant to the hotel directly.
