A one page abstract (A4 size, 297×210mm) is required for each presentation. It should contain the title of paper, author(s), affiliation, postal address, e-mail address of the corresponding author, and main text. The abstract should be in Word or PDF format (less than 2 MB in size), and submitted through our Symposium Web page. You can find the sample on our Web page. The deadline for abstract submission is June 30, 2005. The author is requested to declare the preferred presentation form (oral or poster) at the submition. The corresponding author will be informed of acceptance by September 14, 2005. A work book with all abstract papers in the "as-received" form will be handed to the participants at the symposium site.

The proceedings of ISSS-4 will be published in e-Journal of Surface Science and Nanotechnology (eJSSNT). All papers will be subject to peer review, handled by the program/publication committee of the Symposium. All invited speakers are requested to submit papers which are either original or review papers. Contributed papers should be original. The deadline of manuscript submission is 14 October, a month in advance of the Symposium. The first-round referee reports will be handed to the authors at the Symposium. The manuscript can be submitted on-line via a Web page of eJSSNT.

Since the journal is solely an electronic journal, the papers are individually, and rapidly, published on the Web immediately after acceptance, and are unaffected by delays in other papers. There are no page limitations or fees for publication. The authors are encouraged to use color figures and movies. Detailed information and instructions for manuscript preparation are on the journal Web page http://www.sssj.org/ejssnt. After all papers are published on the Web, a compilation CD-ROM will be sent out to all participants by August 2006: there will be no printed version.

The registrants can also attend the Annual Meeting of the Surface Science Society of Japan (17 – 19 Nov.) which follows ISSS-4 at the same place. (Papers are presented in Japanese there.) The registration fee for the Meeting is waived for the ISSS-4 participants. (But you need pay for the abstract book.) We have established two kinds of awards for young researchers registered in ISSS-4. You should express your intention to be a candidate at the abstract submission. Young researchers should be 35 years old or younger on Nov. 14, 2005. The birthday will be checked by the passport or ID card at the judgment during the symposium. Travel Award: Twenty excellent Asian young researchers

will be supported with ¥50,000 per person as Travel Award. They will be judged only by their abstracts.

Best Poster Award: Several excellent posters presented by young researchers will be awarded. It will be judged by vote of all participants at the poster session on 14 Nov.

For both Awards, the candidate should be the first author of paper and present it by himself/herself, and is requested to submit a manuscript for the proceeding paper. The winners will be commended with medals at Symposium Banquet.
