Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding to become a Surf Life Saving Western Australia Lifeguard can be one of the most rewarding decisions you will make in your

adult life. This information sheet is designed to provide you with answers to some of the questions you may have regarding what it

takes to be a Lifeguard, and help you decide if you have what it takes to join this industry leading team.

What beaches do Lifeguard patrol?

SLSWA provides Lifeguard services to 19 different service delivery locations, provided to more than 11 different contract stakeholders.

These 19 different beaches currently stretch from stunning Albany in the greater south, to the big surf of the Yallingup region in the

south west, to the iconic Cottesloe beach in the Perth metropolitan, through to the massive tides of Cable beach in Broome. The

beach you will patrol will be negotiated with you prior to gaining employment, and the Lifesaving team at Surf House are committed

to ensuring you are placed in a region that is convenient to you.

How many hours a week am I expected to work?

Each of our different service delivery locations have unique service profiles (start and end dates and times). Therefore, opportunities

exist for Lifeguards to work hours that fit in with their lifestyle. Whether you can only work a handful of shifts per month, through to

full-time hours, there’s something to suit everyone.

I want to work as much as possible, but I’m not available 7 days a week.

The Operations Supervisors will do their best to work within your scope of availability, and take steps to ensure your rosters are kept

consistent. If a conflicting priority arises, you are welcome to swap shifts with your teammates. Should the conflicting priority become

a regular occurrence, the Operations Supervisors will work with you to adapt your roster so you can meet all your responsibilities.

What pathways does becoming a lifeguard enable?

Lifeguards are initially engaged in a Grade 1 position and can move through Grade 2 and onto Supervisor and/or SurfCom roles over

subsequent seasons. Each role has a varied level of responsibility and aligned rate of pay.

What qualifications do I need?

The essential criteria to become a SLSWA Lifeguard include a current bronze medallion; current first aid certificate; current in

advanced resuscitation techniques or HLTAID007; ‘C’ class driver’s license; police clearance no older than 6 months; eligible to receive

a Working With Children’s Check; be 18+ years old at time of Lifeguard Capability Trial; and pass the Lifeguard Capability Trial.
