the car is much more willing to slow downwith the assist of the hill. You need to betrailing off the brake when you turn in asthe crest of the hill is not as forgiving. Thefirst apex sees a very slow 45 mph and isa little hard to see as the apex curb seemsto appear out of nowhere. Trying to putthe power down out of Turn 1 is extremelytricky as the road falls away sharplydownhill and feels a touch off-camber atexit. Approaching the first right-hander ofthe Esses, you have to commit to holdingthe throttle down as the speeds climbquickly. The next left, Turn 3, is verydifficult to get the turn-in point correct asit is mostly blind around the corner and it

is very quick, turning in at around125mph. Getting the line right throughthe next series of corners is incrediblytough and if you overdo just one of these alittle, then it will ruin all of them, so itrequires just the right balance! Theseesses get progressively slower as younegotiate them, from 125mph down toabout 60 for the final one. Right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, the corners seemto go on forever and are sure to be tireeaters come race time.‘The final left,Turn 10, is a tricky little

‘over a rise’ section where you again start tohead fairly sharply downhill at the exit. It isa little bit of a relief to arrive there as the

lex Gurney, a two-time RolexSports Car Series champion andson of racing legend Dan Gurney,

was present for the opening ceremonies atthe Circuit of the Americas last fall andtook the opportunity to take several hotlaps of the 3.4-mile race track. He wasimpressed, and can hardly wait to drive theNo. 99 ‘Red Dragon’GAINSCO AutoInsurance/Bob Stallings Racing CorvetteDaytona Prototype with regular co-driverJon Fogarty in this weekend’s feature event.‘We expect to reach approximately

150mph on the approach to the incrediblysteep face of the hill before Turn 1. Thisbrake zone really dares you to go deep, as

esses are finally over, but now the speedspick up again. The track gets very widebriefly and there’s a good overtaking areaas you approach the brake zone for Turn 11.

‘Turn 11 is a very slow, slipperycorner with a big wide entry where it iscrucial to get a good exit for the longeststraight on the track. Use too much curbat that exit and it seems like it saps yourlaunch onto the straight. The long backstraight actually has a long, gentle curve toit and in high-downforce trim we will reachabout 160 mph before we brake for Turn12. This is another slow hairpin, around45mph, and again a difficult spot to get anice clean exit. Turn 13 is a deceiving

little right-hander and is very easy tocarry too much speed into as it continuesto bend more than 90 degrees.

‘Turn 14 is a slight right and Turn 15is another corner that invites mistakes asyou are braking and turning and shiftinginto another decreasing-radius corner. Now, pick up the throttle and hold on forthe triple right-hander at Turns 16–17–18.This is supposed to mimic the triple leftof the epic F1 circuit in Istanbul Turkeyand should be a fun spot to watch. Thisshould be a third-gear 100mph+ sectionand is lots of fun to drive! There aremultiple lines through here but theimportant thing is to carry as much speed

aarree ttrryyiinngg ttoo mmaasshh tthhee tthhrroottttllee!!””as possible. We get up to about 135mphbefore we have to get back over to theright side of the track to set up for Turn19. You will see a lot of cars going off atthe exit of 19 because of the high speedsat entry.

‘Now we’re approaching the finalcorner, Turn 20 – and another trickyone to cap off a lap. This corner fallsaway at exit, right when you are tryingto mash the throttle! I like that this isnot a straightforward finishing corneras the mistakes will open up thechances for overtaking. Overall, a veryexhausting lap but great fun around theCircuit of the Americas!’ z

his season will be the 14th to beheld under the auspices of theGrand American Road Racing

Association, which was formed in time forthe 2000 season, and the 12th with titlesponsorship from Rolex. The weekend’sfeature race will comprise three classes:Daytona Prototypes,GT and GX.The DPconcept for the premier class, featuringpurpose-built tube-frame cars built aroundproduction-based engines, has been inplace since 2003.The ultra-successfulGrand Touring class structure, centeredupon modified road-going sports cars, hadbeen the solitary other division since 2005but has been augmented this year by thenew GX category which is aimed atintroducing some newer technologies tothe existing framework.

The 12-race 2013 campaign kicked offwith the traditional twice-around-the-clockRolex 24 At Daytona in January, and it was aclassic.Traditionally, the keys to success in

a 24-hour race – and endurance racing ingeneral – were consistency andconservation, making sure not to over-extend the car or the drivers. Boy, howtimes have changed. Reliability of the cars– and the conditioning of the drivers – hasevolved significantly in recent years, suchthat the 2013 edition resembled a flat-outsprint from start to finish.Any minor miscueproved costly.Outright speed hasn’t alwaysbeen the determining factor in enduranceracing, but it certainly was at Daytona – andwill be again during this weekend’s two-hour and 45-minute contest.

DP CLASSThe 51st running of the Rolex 24 featured arecord number of lead changes andculminated in a sprint to the finish, so it wasno surprise to see the pole-winningTELMEX/Target Riley-BMW of Scott Pruettand Memo Rojas – ably assisted by NASCARstar Juan Pablo Montoya and IndyCar rising

man Charlie Kimball – at the headof the field.Victory for the ChipGanassi Racing with FelixSabates team represented anincredible fifth triumph in just10 attempts at the jewel in theRolex Sports Car Series’crown. It was also the 151stwin in all competitions forteam principal ChipGanassi, who also runsfront-runningcampaigns in theIZOD Indy CarSeries and NASCARSprint Cup.f

Pruett, from Auburn,Calif., and MexicoCity native Rojas have enjoyed anastonishing run of success in Rolex Seriescompetition. The pair have combined towin four championships in the past fiveyears, including the last three insuccession, while Pruett – ‘Mr.Grand-Am’– also took honors for the team in 2004,partnered by Max Papis.

The white-and-blue TELMEX machinewill surely arrive here in Texas as the firmfavorite to win Saturday’s race, but thereis no shortage of serious challengers.

From one extreme of experience toanother, don’t be surprised to see thesimilar BMW/Dinan-powered Riley ofTeam Sahlen to be running near the sharpend of the field. Supported by Joe Sahlen’smeat-packing business and run by thefather-and-two-sons team of Joe,Will andWayne Nonnamaker,Team Sahlen hasbeen a stalwart of the GT class in recentyears with Mazda, finally earning its firstvictory last year – appropriately enoughat Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This yearthe family team has stepped up into theDP ranks and immediately proved itselfup to the task as impressive youngsterDane Cameron qualified a strong third atDaytona and was dicing for the lead in theopening exchanges.

‘The transition to DP has been prettystraightforward,’ said Cameron, who won

the Pro Mazda open-wheel championshipin 2007 and was a leading contender in theAtlantic Championship before grasping anopportunity to move into the sports carranks.‘I have really been enjoying it.Thecar is stiffer, lighter and more responsivethan the GT car, and it’s nice to have somedownforce again! The toughest part aboutmoving to DP full-time has also been themost exciting part – developing our Riley-BMW into a front-running program. f

I love testing and development so I havereally enjoyed playing a part in progressingfrom our first car’s shakedown test, when wehad no idea where to begin with setup, toqualifying in the top three for the Rolex 24.’

One other interesting aspect of TeamSahlen is the fact that its engineering staffis led by a woman. Katie Crawford, though,is no newcomer to the sport. Her father,Max Crawford, is a renowned engineerand fabricator, and Katie has been heavilyinvolved in motor racing her entire life.

A phalanx of distinctive Corvette DPcars will provide plenty of opposition tothe Riley-BMWs.During the race atDaytona, all six posted a best lap within ahalf-second of each other.

The highest finishing ‘Bow Tie’ car inFlorida, taking second place, was the No. 10VelocityWorldwide/Toshiba/Chevroletversion fielded byWayne Taylor Racing.Veteran Max ‘the Ax ‘ Angelelli, an Italianbased in Monte Carlo, will share the carwith rising star Jordan Taylor, who, yes, isthe son of team ownerWayne Taylor (whohimself was an extremely accomplisheddriver, with multiple sports-carchampionships to his credit) but hasearned this opportunity purely on merit.

The youngster is mature well beyond his 21years and has been a front-runner in theGT ranks for the past three seasons, finishing just two points shy of taking topchampionship honors in 2011 andattracting the attention of the factoryCorvette Racing team which allowed him tomake his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in 2012.

Fourth and eighth positions at Daytonawere filled by the pair of Corvette DPsentered by Action Express Racing which hasentered the 2013 season with a fresh – albeitvery experienced – driver lineup andextremely high expectations.Theteam is no stranger to success, having evolved from one of themost storied names in RolexSeries racing,Brumos Racing, but has established a newidentity under the guidance offormer NASCAR driver EltonSawyer. After winning tworaces for Action Express in2012,Portugal’s Joao Barbosawill share the No.9 car with BurtFrisselle, while Formula 1,ChampCar and sports-car veteran ChristianFittipaldi – nephew of three-times F1World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi –

will be supported in the No.9 entry by Burt’syounger brother, Brian. Both Frissellebrothers are proven front-runners at thislevel and also come from a well knownracing family with father Brad having wonmultiple races and titles in the 1970s.f

Maintaining the racing family theme,Jordan Taylor’s older brother,Ricky, will beanother contender for victory in the No.90Spirit of Daytona Racing Corvette DP he willshare with equally rapid Englishman RichardWestbrook.Ricky,23,marked himself as anexpert qualifier while driving for his father’steam for the past three seasons, claiming 10pole positions, and has every intention ofadding to his tally of seven race wins afterbeing enticed across to Troy Flis’ambitiousSpirit of Daytona team.

Westbrook won three times in 2012 butalso finished outside the top five on sixoccasions, which, in a series where thepoint system rewards consistency, restricted him to a disappointing 10th in thefinal standings. The team has aspirations ofa far stronger campaign in 2013.

The Corvette contingent is completedby 8 Star Motorsports and GAINSCO/BobStallings Racing. The first of these is abrand-new organization established overthe winter by Enzo Potolicchio. The 44-

year-old Venezuelan enjoyed a breakout2012 season which included victories atthe Twelve Hours of Sebring and the 24Hours of Le Mans, and now is spreadinghis wings to include an assault on theRolex Sports Car Series with a brand-newcar and a new team symbolized by theeight stars that adorn the Venezuelan flag.

The team which boasted an all-starinternational lineup of drivers, includingFrenchmen Stephane Sarrazin and NicolasMinassian,Portugal’s Pedro Lamy and

Englishman Anthony Davidson, hitproblems early during the race atDaytona, restricting it to anunrepresentative 34th placeoverall finish, tenth among theDP class, but Potolicchio isintent upon bouncing back witha strong result this weekend.

Last and by no meansleast, the No. 99 GAINSCO‘Red Dragon’ is sure to be acrowd favorite, especiallysince it’s competing in itsonly home-state race ofthe season. f

Drivers Alex Gurney, the son of racinglegend Dan Gurney (who remains the onlyAmerican to win a Formula 1 race in a carhe also designed and built – at the 1967Belgian Grand Prix), and Jon Fogartyalready have two DP championship titlesunder their belts, in 2007 and 2009, andhave their sights set on a third. The pairingearned four second-place finishes in 2012but, for the first time since 2006, failed toscore a victory.Their 2013 campaign alsobegan in disappointing fashion at Daytona, restricted to seventh place by someelectrical gremlins during the early stages.Nevertheless, the car was fast and willdoubtless be challenging for honors here.

Interestingly, while all the Corvette DPcars appear identical, other than theirliveries, they are supplied by three differentmanufacturers. The pair of Action Expresscars, the Spirit of Daytona entry and the 8Star machine all feature Coyote chassis builtby Chevrolet stalwarts Pratt & Miller, whileWayne Taylor Racing’sVelocityWorldwideNo. 10 car is built by Dallara in Italy and theGAINSCO car utilizes a Riley chassis.

Two other likely challengers for the DPwin – Michael Shank Racing and Starworkswith Alex Popow – are also equipped withthe latest Riley DPG3 chassis, albeitpowered by FordV8 engines.

MSR’s No. 60 Riley-Ford will be sharedby Florida-based Brazilian Ozz Negri (whodrove only one stint at Daytona whilerecovering from the effects of a leg injurysustained over the winter) and John Pew, anaccomplished ocean sailor and two-timewinner of the Jim Trueman Award as theseries’ top Pro-Am driver. Peter Baron’sStarworks team came closest to topplingPruett and Rojas from their perch atop thechampionship standings last year, placing aclose second with six podium finishes.

For thelonger and more difficult races, such as our marqueeevents, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Six Hours ofWatkins Glen, a three-to-five man team will contend. Inaddition to taking on tires, refueling and makingchassis adjustments, driver changes are also requiredduring the race.

DAYTONA PROTOTYPE CLASS (DP) The Daytona Prototype (DP) class consists of striking,mid-engine machines purpose-built for close, door-to-door competition – and made to order forexcitement. Capable of speeds in excess of 190 mph,DPs also feature the latest in safety and technology.

Scotsman Ryan Dalziel andVenezuelanteammate Alex Popow began their 2013campaign with a sixth at Daytona afterexperiencing a few delays but, incommon with the remainder of the field, are excited about racing at COTA.

‘It’s not often that GRAND-AM gets torace on a Formula 1 circuit, ‘ says Dalziel.‘The place looks amazing and I’m reallylooking forward to it.We found a fewproblems with the car after the race atDaytona so I’m sure we’ll be a lotstronger in Texas.’ Popow, incidentally, isone of only a few drivers with priorexperience of the track, having competedin the Ferrari Challenge races during theF1 weekend last fall.

GT CLASSThe GT category is likely to be every bit asclosely fought as the DP class, and while theentry list was far from complete as we closedfor press, it still contained a representativeselection of potential winners.

Jeff Segal and accomplished amateurco-driver Emil Assentato last yearcombined to win their second Rolex GTChampionship in three years, driving abrand-new Ferrari 458 for AIM AutosportTeam FXDD.The partnership has beensplit this season, with veteran AnthonyLazzaro joining Assentato in the FXDDentry and Segal driving a sisterR.Ferri/AIM Motorsport Racing Ferrariwith vastly experienced Indy Car and

NASCAR veteran Max Papis; both carswere contenders at Daytona. Assentatobegan his title defense with a third-placefinish,while the Segal/Papis car, sharedwith Ferrari factory drivers GiancarloFisichella and ToniVilander, placed adisappointing 21st after experiencingsome lengthy delays.

Californians Johannes van OverbeekandMike Hedlund will drive a third Ferrari458, supported by Tequila Patron andentered by proven American Le Mans Serieswinning team Extreme SpeedMotorsports.

Two more European brands, Porscheand Audi, will be among the many andvaried contenders seeking to knock

Ferrari off the top of the ManufacturersChampionship pile. Audi made its RolexSeries debut last year with its potent R8GRAND-AM, earning a best finish ofsecond in the season finale, but sprung toprominence in January at Daytona bysweeping the top two places. Admittedly, the result owed much to strategy – withrapid European Filipe Albuquerquecoming from behind inside the final hourto snatch victory for Alex Job Racing andteammates Oliver Jarvis, Eduardo Mortaraand Dion von Moltke – but there was nodenying the Audis’ capability.f

r NO.59 BRUMOS RACING PORSCHE GT3

Alex Job was still awaiting confirmation atpress time as to whether he would continueto represent Audi Sport Customer Racing inTexas – if so, von Moltke will be the focalpoint for the team after also winning atSebring last year, at the wheel of an AJRPorsche – while APR Motorsport and RumBum Racing, similarly stepping up from theContinental Tire Sports Car Series, also arelikely to field the attractive R8s.

A magnificent customer-supportprogram has ensured that the Porsche 911GT3 Cup car has been a staple of the GTcategory since its inception. Regular andeffective updates belie the incredible factthat the 911 was first conceived 50 yearsago, and several of the Stuttgart-built carswill be capable of challenging for thevictory. Among the standard bearerswill be Magnus Racing No.44car handled by JohnPotter and three-timeRolex championAndy Lally,

the familiar No. 59 Brumos Racing entry for2011 champions Leh Keen and AndrewDavis and the emerging Park PlaceMotorsports team which will includePorsche’s lone American factory driver,Patrick Long, among its roster.

Another particularly potent car in GTwill be Stevenson Motorsports’ rumblingNo. 57 Chevrolet Camaro GT.R driven byRobin Liddell, who has 18 wins under hisbelt and, to his intense annoyance, hasfinished runner-up three times in the GTstandings (including 2012).Theexperienced Scotsman will share withrising talent John Edwards, who countsopen-wheel championships in Pro Mazdaand Atlantic to his credit and has taken toGT cars like a duck to water.

The GX class is still in its infancy but

holds plenty of intrigue. Five carscontested the opening race at Daytona, withthe Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman Semerging as a clear winner in the hands ofveterans David Donohue and Shane Lewis, ably supported by Dr. Jim Norman andVenezuelan Nelson Canache Jr.Ofparticular technical interest are the pair ofSpeedSource Mazda6 GX cars powered bythe exciting new turbocharged MazdaSKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine. The carshit some developmental problems duringtheir debut but boast a strong driverlineup comprising veteran SylvainTremblay, former Mazda MX-5 Nationalchampion Tom Long and two promisingyoung Americans (and former winners ofprestigious Team USA Scholarships) JoelMiller and Tristan Nunez.z

THE CONTINENTAL TIRES SPORTS CAR CHALLENGE CONSISTENTLY PROVIDES

SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING ACTION TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET

aturday morning'ssecond round of the2013 title chase is

sure to be no different. A fieldof well over 50 cars, representing at least a dozendifferent manufacturers, will dobattle for two and a half hours, and the list of potential winnersis extensive.

The 'showroom stock'concept is well proven. It isstrictly controlled and allowsteams to make only veryspecific changes to the carsthat you or I could buy from anycar dealership around thecountry. Costs, therefore, arekept within reasonable bounds– at least by auto racingstandards – and the sanctioningbody, GRAND-AM, works hardto ensure that no one oversteps

the technical boundaries. The series comprises two

classes. Grand Sport (GS)features large-displacement sixor eight-cylinder sports cars, including the Ford MustangBoss 302 R, Chevrolet CamaroGS.R, Porsches, BMWs and theexotic Aston Martin Vantage, aswell as some smaller-capacitymotors featuring forcedinduction, such as the SubaruWRX STI. The Street Tuner (ST)class caters to smaller four orsix-cylinder cars – which canbe sedans, coupes or roadsters– and boasts a wide range ofcompeting marques includingBMW, Honda, Mazda, Nissan,Porsche and Volkswagen. Theeclectic mix draws drivers withan equally wide variety ofexperience and ensures there

is never a dull moment. The season-opening race at

Daytona InternationalSpeedway in January set thetone for another intriguingcampaign with six different GScars taking a turn out in front ofthe field and no fewer than ninedifferent ST competitorsenjoying a taste of the lead.

In the end, overall and GSspoils fell to Jack Roush Jr andBilly Johnson; it was the secondtime in succession that theCalifornia/Michigan pairing hadswept to victory at Daytona intheir distinctive red #61 RoushPerformance Mustang Boss 302R. They make an interestingcombination. Yes, Roush is theson of legendary drag racing,NASCAR and Trans-Am entrant(and two-time air-crash

survivor) Jack Roush, aka ‘TheCat in the Hat’. Junior is 39 nowand has amassed plenty ofaccomplishments of his own. Hebegan karting at the age of 6and established his owninternet software companybefore joining RoushPerformance to focus on theinternet side of his father'sbusiness which specializes inhigh-performance aftermarketcar parts and accessories;Roush Jr has been racing in theContinental Challenge since2006. Daytona marked his ninthGS victory – all with Johnson –and the perfect way to return toaction after being forced to missthe final two races last year dueto a broken wrist sustained in acrash at Mazda RacewayLaguna Seca.

Teammate Johnson, 26,looked set for a career in theopen-wheel ranks after winningmultiple karting titles anddisplaying immense promise inFormula BMW in the mid-2000s.Once the California nativerealized the difficulties he facedin obtaining the budget to keephis career on an upward curve, however, he began to exploreother options. He soon foundhis niche in the Continental TireSports Car Challenge. Johnsonfinished second in the 2007 STstandings, winning a series-high four races, and hasamassed nine more victoriessince moving up to GS thefollowing year. No one hasscored more CTSCC wins orpodiums than Johnson over thepast five seasons.

Personable, versatile andfast, Johnson has made hismark in other series, too, including starts in both GTand DP cars in the RolexSports Car Series and theNASCAR Nationwide series, but for 2013 his sights are setfirmly on some unfinishedbusiness – namely to win theCTSCC title with Roush.

Many other contenders haveidentical aspirations, includingthe other two podium finishersat Daytona,Matt Plumb/NickLonghi and defending serieschampions DavidEmpringham/John Farano.

Plumb and Longhi bouncedback from being punted into anearly spin and a penalty for apit-lane speed violation tofinish a strong second in Luis

and Jennifer Bacardi'sdistinctive Rum Bum RacingPorsche Carrera. The pairinitially thought they hadclinched the 2012championship after winningthe final race at Lime RockPark, only to discover theywere ineligible for pointsbecause Longhi didn'tcomplete the minimum drivingtime (30 minutes) and Plumb, who took over at the wheelinside the opening half-hour ofthe race, was not properlynominated for points. Plumbwas initially entered in both ofthe team's cars, but given sucha scenario, GRAND-AMregulations require that thedriver must start the race in thecar with which he intends toscore points.

The oversight was as leastpartly assuaged by the fact thatRum Bum Racing, managed byaccomplished racing veteranJoeVarde, did clinch the TeamChampionship – due rewardafter winning five of the 10races. This year they plan toadd the Driver Championshipto their laurels.

Canadians Empringhamand Farano were thebeneficiaries of the Rum Bumteam's miscue, claiming the2012 GS title after aremarkably consistentcampaign in their BGBMotorsports Porsche. In fact, they failed to win a race butwere always among theleading contenders, failingonly twice to finish amongthe top six. f

he primary focus this weekend willof course be on sports cars asGRAND-AM’s headlining Rolex

Sports Car Series Daytona Prototypes andGTs make their eagerly anticipated debut atCircuit of the Americas alongside the streetcar-based contenders from the ContinentalTires Sports Car Challenge. But don’t forget, though, that many of the topcontenders first cut their racing teeth, so tospeak, in the open-wheel ranks. The Pro Mazda Championship Presented

by Cooper Tires sports a slightly differentname this year, with Andersen Promotionsnow at the helm after the Rodrigues family’swithdrawal from the Star Mazda series theycreated in 1991, but its credibility remainsintact. And don’t be surprised if several ofthe leading contenders from this weekend’spair of races – which open up the 2013season – find their way into sports cars inthe years to come. After all, that’s exactly what happened to

former champions Dane Cameron andJohn Edwards, both of whom are likely toplay leading roles in the Grand-Am of theAmericas Presented by GAINSCO andTotal. Cameron won the Pro Mazda crownin 2007, and this year has made theprogression, along with Team Sahlen, fromRolex GT to DP, while Edwards, whosucceeded Cameron as the title winner in2008, is sure to be one of the leading GT

protagonists in the Stevenson MotorsportsChevrolet Camaro GT.R.‘I’m very proud of being able to call

myself a Pro Mazda Champion,’ saysCameron. ‘The series is always full of verytalented and extremely hungry youngdrivers, and at times it feels like half thefield has a chance to win races. I learnedtwo very valuable lessons. The first one wasthat consistency wins championships. Also,I realized how much time can be gained orlost on the first few laps after a start, or arestart. It was important to build a gap andthen try to manage it. Now, in sports carswith tons of pit stops and restarts, you cangain a lot by being quicker than the otherguys on cold tires. I really enjoyed my timein Pro Mazda – being successful therereally helped to put me on the map as Imoved forward in my career.’Pro Mazda will comprise a total of 16

races this year, beginning here at COTAwith a pair of 45-minute sprints – oneapiece on Friday and Saturday. The actionis sure to be fast and furious. At least four drivers – Matthew Brabham,

Spencer Pigot, Scott Anderson and ShelbyBlackstock – are graduating this year fromUSF2000. And all are very highly rated.Brabham, who celebrated his 19th

birthday on Monday, hails from a racingdynasty. His grandfather, Sir Jack, won a trioof Formula 1World Championships in 1959,

‘60 and ‘66. His father, Geoff, and uncleDavid both earned victories at the famed24 Hours of Le Mans. The youngestBrabham won last year’s USF2000 crown, which guaranteed him a ride in Pro Mazdavia the MAZDASPEED Driver DevelopmentScholarship. Coupled with AndrettiAutosport (which also won the IZODIndyCar Series title last year with RyanHunter-Reay), he must surely be regardedas a likely title contender.‘I’m so excited for this upcoming

season, as I am moving up a step in theMazda Road to Indy,’ says Brabham. ‘ThePro Mazda car has more power than I’mused to and it’s such a fun car to drive, soI’m really looking forward to my first racehere at Circuit of the Americas.’Pigot, meanwhile, has been snapped up

by Team Pelfrey, which guided EnglishmanJack Hawksworth to the 2012 Pro Mazda title. The Florida-based squad has undergonesome changes since then but the talentedPigot, 19, who won eight of the 14 USF2000events last year and only narrowly missedout on claiming the title, continued to displayhis ability when he convincingly topped aPro Mazda test at the Indianapolis MotorSpeedway road course last fall.‘Starting a new racing season is always

exciting, especially this year as I’m movingup to the Pro Mazda Championship withTeam Pelfrey,’ says Pigot. ‘It’s going to be a

tough season; there are a lot of newchallenges for myself and the team. It’s beena while since my last race so I’m reallylooking forward to the first round here inAustin. Being able to kick the year off atCOTA will be an awesomeexperience. I’ve watcheda lot of footage from thetrack and it looks like ablast to drive!’Anderson, 24, also

boasts strongcredentials afterwinning the 2011Skip Barber National title and adding apair of USF2000 wins last year in hisrookie campaign, while 23-year-oldBlackstock – the son of country singingstar Reba McIntyre – showed solid paceboth in USF2000 and the Continental TireChallenge last year.Minnesota-based JDCMotorSports will

field cars for returning series veterans ZachMeyer, from Canada, and Colombian JuanPiedrahita, who finished seventh in last year’stitle-chase. Countryman Juan Camilo Acosta, who scored one win during a partial seasonin the PanamGP Series in 2012, will step upto Pro Mazda with the new Cresson,Texas-based M1 Racing team, while other talentednewcomers will include Californianteenager Kyle Kaiser and California-basedWelshman Lloyd Read. z

WHAT IS PRO MAZDA ?clearly defined path to reach the top echelonsof the sport in North America had becomefractured over time but has been revitalized in

recent years by the Mazda Road to Indy which, allied tothe MAZDASPEED Driver Development Ladder, nowcomprises all the ingredients necessary to ensure alogical and well balanced three-step progression throughthe ranks. Sanctioned by INDYCAR, Pro Mazda representsthe middle step on the Mazda Road to Indy, in betweenUSF2000 and Indy Lights. Frenchman Tristan Vautier, whowon the title in 2011, will graduate to the IZOD IndyCarSeries after winning last year’s Firestone Indy LightsChampionship, while 2012 champion Jack Hawksworth, from England, is looking to follow in his footsteps bystepping up into Indy Lights for 2013. Pro Mazdacan trace its roots back to 1983, when the JimRussell Racing School imported a fleetof tube-frame Hayashi chassis from

Japan, and mated them with the ultra reliable Mazdarotary engines. The school ran a well supportedprofessional series which provided a launching pad forthe careers of many well known drivers. Gary Rodriguestook over the sanctioning rights in 1991, beginning with aseries of regional championships around the UnitedStates before Star Mazda evolved into a true nationaltitle-chase in 1999. The current cars, introduced in 2004,feature state-of-the-art composite chassis, MazdaRenesis rotary engines and – new for 2013 – Cooper Zeonracing tires. Top names to have graduated through theseries include NASCAR veteran Michael MacDowell, BMWMotorsport factory driver Joey Hand, current IZOD IndyCarSeries standouts Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti andJames Hinchcliffe, and rising star Conor Daly.

n January at the traditionalseason-opening Rolex 24 AtDaytona, the California native

qualified his familiar No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing with FelixSabates Dinan/BMW-powered Rileysquarely on pole position. He set out ashe intended to continue, leading fromthe front and going on to notch thevictory along with regular GRAND-AMco-driver Memo Rojas, rising IndyCarstar Charlie Kimball and F1, INDYCARand NASCAR veteran Juan PabloMontoya. The win was Pruett's fifth in theRolex 24 At Daytona, tying him with thisyear's Grand Marshall Hurley Haywoodas the most successful of all time at thetwice-around-the-clock classic. Pruetthas also earned five more class victoriesover the years at Daytona, dating back to1987 when he took the GTO honors in aRoush Racing Ford Mustang.

Like so many of today's top racers,Pruett started out in karts, at age 8. Heultimately won 10 major titles – and in 1991was inducted into theWorld KartingAssociation Hall of Fame – before movinginto cars in 1984. He made his markvirtually right away in sedans, joining JackRoush's team and scoring his first IMSAGTO win aboard a Ford Mustang at Poconoin 1985. He won the title one year later, added his first Trans-Am Championship in1987, driving a Roush Racing Ford MerkurXR4Ti, and never looked back.

He was among very few sedan driversto transition successfully into open-wheelcars. After making his Indy Car debut withDick Simon Racing at the 1988 Long BeachGrand Prix, Pruett earned co-Rookie of theYear honors at the 1989 Indianapolis 500 forTruesports Racing, adding two podiumfinishes that year, and was seemingly set fora stellar career before suffering a

devastating crash during testing. He missedthe entire 1990 season while recuperatingfrom his injuries but showed he hadlost none of his determination byadding five top-five finishesduring a difficult 1991 campaignwith a brand-new car.

After a brief flirtation onceagain in sports cars whichnetted a second Trans-Amcrown in 1994, Pruettjoined Patrick Racingand embarked on anintensivedevelopmentprogram withFirestone whichculminated in the tiregiant's return to top-level open-wheelracing in 1995 after alengthy hiatus. f

Fast-In All ClassesSCOTT PRUETT IS FIRMLY ACKNOWLEDGED AS ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED AND VERSATILE RACE

CAR DRIVERS IN NORTH AMERICA. HE'S COMPETED SUCCESSFULLY IN ALMOST EVERY CONCEIVABLE KIND

OF CAR, AND EVEN AT AGE 52 SHOWS ABSOLUTELY NO SIGN OF LOSING HIS COMPETITIVE DESIRE

The hard work paid off with a sensationalvictory in that year's Michigan 500following a protracted duel with Al Unser Jr.Pruett's developmental abilities also

were tapped by Toyota when it embarkedon a Champ Car program in 1990, and itwas he who scored the manufacturer'sfirst tangible success by qualifying onpole position for the final race of the '99season at Fontana. It was also Pruett's finalstart at the pinnacle of US open-wheelracing, but far from the end of his career.Pruett moved into NASCAR the

following year, then reverted to the sports-

car realm. He won the GTS class at the LeMans 24 Hours in 2001 at the wheel of aCorvette, added a third Trans-Am title, driving a Jaguar XKR for Paul Gentilozzi'sRocketsports Racing team in 2003, andthen forged his astonishingly successfulpartnership with Ganassi in GRAND-AMRoad Racing which to date has brought nofewer than 39 wins and five Championshipsin the Daytona Prototype division. But wait, there's more! In addition to his

successes behind the wheel, Pruett andwife Judy have collaborated in writing fourhighly acclaimed children's books, which

are marketed through their own publishingcompany,Word Weaver Books, and morerecently have developed an award-winning winery at their home in Auburn,Calif. Indeed, theWine Spectator recentlynamed Pruett Vineyards as one of the topwinemakers to watch in the future. As you can tell, no grass grows

beneath Scott Pruett's feet! z
