“Circle Time STEAM”
n PROGRAM OVERVIEW Circle Time STEAM is a program
that I have developed throughout the past two years. It started out as small activities during center time and soon developed into a Circle Time type of activity. We come together as a class for circle a few different times throughout the day and I plan STEAM related activities for one Circle Time each day. My students are all special needs pre-k students and lack basic skills needed for success in the general student population.
I started this program because my students needed more structured opportunities to practice the skills (social and academic) that they lacked. I change my activities based on our current monthly theme and incorporate a variety of academic standards into them.
One activity that my students enjoy is the “Foodie Friday” activity. I have a set of visual recipes that we use to create a quick snack each Friday. These recipes have visual aides and we focus on math (measuring) and literacy (sequencing).

n DIRECTIONS * This lesson may be split into multiple
days1. Discuss characters using the anchor
chart. Talk about how characters can be people or animals and tell the students that the characters in our book today are animals.
2. Show them the pictures on the story cards and ask the students to predict what types of animals we will have in the book. Allow the students a couple of minutes to share their ideas.
3. Read the story aloud to the students and make sure to discuss all the characters inside of the book. Afterwards talk about their houses and allow the students to discuss any questions or thoughts that they had about the construction of the houses. Ask the students what they would build their houses out of.
4. Show the students the pictures in the construction book and talk about all the work and steps that have to be done to build a sturdy house. Houses have to be build to withstand dif ferent weather elements such as wind.
5. Show the students several different types of building materials, including the materials inside of the STEM kit. Allow the students to choose which materials they would like to use to build their house. If more than one student chooses the same material, they can work as a team to build a house. Tell the students that once everyone is done, we will try to blow down the houses using our mouths and the fan to see who build the most sturdy house.
6. As the students have finished, engage them in discussion about their houses and how they built them. You can also use this time to discuss the different shapes that they used in their houses.

engagement, shape recognition, and sturdiness of house construction.
n ACCOMMODATIONSStudents who have communication
issues can point to pictures of characters in the story when identifying the characters. You can also use a chart of shapes to have the students point to shapes that they used in their houses.

3. Use the stem kit to discuss what a submarine is and use the weights to model how the more weight you have, the more likely it will be for the boat to sink. Have students count as you keep adding weights to see if the boat will sink.
4. Use the items that the students predictedwould sink or float andhave the students add them to the water and identify if their predictions were correct or not.
5. Allow the students oppor tunities to exploretheweightsand objects in the water.
6. Give each student a piece of paper a n d c r a y o n s to d raw abou t an ob jec t they exploredwith thewater.
