Human activity functions according to a rhythm determined by nature. Since dawn, we use daylight in our daily activities – work, studying, and entertainment. We rest when daylight goes away, regenerating during the nighttime. This is the circadian rhythm, during which we spend about 16 hours being active, and the re-maining 8 hours resting. This is a rhythm that has been forced upon us by evolution.

This daily activity pattern is determined not only by practicality. Scientific studies prove that a dependency of a chemical nature also exists. Light not only helps us to discover the images com-ing from the world that surrounds us. It regulates sleep, partic-ipates in the absorption and production of vitamins, and takes care of proper hormonal management. Importantly, daylight di-rectly affects people’s mood and well-being.

DAYLIGHT – A NATURAL REGULATOR

The retina has three photoreceptors: rods, cones, and the third ipRGC photoreceptor which is sensitive to blue light in a narrow wavelength. This ”third” photoreceptor is responsible for regu-lating the circadian cycle. Only after about 90 minutes of expo-sure to light, the process of the release of melatonin, called the sleep hormone, is stopped. The problem of circadian rhythm irregularities occurs most in places where access to daylight is limited.

Visible light affects diverse physiological functions. The blue wavelength of light has melatonin suppression characteristics.

In order to minimize the effects of a disrupted circadian rhythm, ES-SYSTEM has expanded its prod-uct offer to include luminaires equipped with CIRCADIAN technology. 4000K white light has been en-riched with blue and red beams with strictly defined wavelengths. Blue-enriched white light helps to improve alertness and boosts the reaction time only when you needed it. On the other hand, red-en-riched white light helps with better sleep, improved behavior and mood.

HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING

Nowadays more and more people are struggling with sleep disorders, irritability, apathy, and even depression. Scientists have unequivocally confirmed that these problems are caused by lacking access to daylight. Spending the majority of the day in rooms with limited access to daylight and the seasons with a significantly shorter daytime expose people to the adverse phenomenon of releasing melatonin at the same level throughout the day. This results in numerous negative con-sequences, such as: lack of concentration, bad mood, drowsiness, apathy, fatigue, and even de-pression. This affects learning performance and work efficiency.Unfortunately, ordinary fluorescent lamps and white LEDs are incapable of effectively replacing daylight. The solutions that are currently available on the market change the color of the light and can influence people’s moods, they do not, however, affect the regulation of the circadian rhythm.

Since light is a potent regulator of the human circadian rhythm, the goal of lighting design should also be to provide illumination for human photobiological response as well as vision.

The Nobel prize for medicine and physiology in 2017 was awarded to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash i Michael W. Young – scientists who contributed to explaining the molecular mechanism of the daily activity rhythm, i.e. the CIRCADIAN RHYTHM. Using well-known scientific dis-coveries and the possibilities offered by LED technology, ES-SYSTEM has enriched 4000K white light with blue and red beams of light with strictly defined wavelengths. Luminaires with the CIRCADIAN technology effectively regulate the circadian rhythm.

FACTS

The higher the color of light, the greater the blue content and higher the melatonin suppression

Blue light exposure has a negative affect on melatonin suppression prior to bed time

The minimum duration of exposure to morning daylight in order to stop melatonin production is 90 minutes

Circadian rhythm disorders can lead to cardiovascular di-sease, hormonal problems, and above all, mental disor-ders such as chronic fatigue or depression

A NOBEL PRIZE FOR RESEARCH ON CIRCADIAN

The remarkable effects of CIRCADIAN technology have been recorded by therapists from the Järvenpää Hospital in Helsinki. The Finnish facility uses a light treatment room using ES-SYSTEM technology. The TRANSPARENT and OP-POSITE luminaires that are used there emit light that aids the therapy in patients with depression and seasonal mood disorders.

“The right-timed exposures to light benefit not only the treatment of seasonal mood disorders, but also that of non-seasonal depressive disorders and cir-cadian rhythm sleep disorders. Thus, the concept of CIRCADIAN fits in the evidence-based approach to the treatment of the aforementioned mental disorders and supports their clinical management.”

LIGHTING DESIGN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

Designing lighting in accordance with the circadian rhythm is a fundamentally different process than standard lighting design. The traditional approach is mainly focused on visibility, minimizing glare and shadows, providing appropriate color rendering and safety. When designing lighting in line with the concept of Human Centric Lighting, it is important to consider the light intensity, spectrum and exposure time. If the light emitted by the luminaire is meant to effectively strive towards imitating daylight, it cannot shine in a concentrated beam onto one spot. Scientific research shows that the most effective luminaires are ones that work on large surfaces, and, like the sun, not only directly illuminate certain areas, but also use reflective light.

ES-SYSTEM has introduced the CIRCADIAN technology to a whole range of luminaires that can be successfully used in offices, schools, lecture halls, conference rooms, as well as hospitals, retirement homes, and private homes and apartments. The products vary in design and have many different applications, allowing you to suitably arrange any interior.

The mobile app also features a blue-enriched light mode that can be activated at lunchtime. There are three options: for 30 – , 60 – , or 90 minutes –

All luminaires are delivered with a factory setting established in accordance with scientific re-search results. When the luminaire is switched on in the morning, it lights up with blue-en-riched white LEDs. After the required time has passed to achieve the long-lasting effect of stopping melatonin release, we switch off the blue-enriched LEDs, and work continues at a color temperature of 4000K. At the appropriate time before sunset, we switch on the red-en-riched LEDs, which helps to prepare the body for getting some rest.

MOTION DETECTION

The lighting control system with which we have equipped the luminaires with CIRCADIAN technology makes it possi-ble to program appropriate lighting that is adapted to more than just the time of day. The built-in clock and calendar al-low for planning lighting in such a way, that allows for sup-plementing access to daylight throughout the year.

Motion sensor technology provides light at the right time and place. Light switches on automatically when a person moves in the vicinity of the sensor and switches off when there is no movement in the detection area. The system is coordinated with a clock so that the spectrum of the emit-ted light is matched to the current time of day.
