Alongside a determined local lawyer, Lyndal takes on the powerful church that denied her abuse for over a decade. Based on true events that changed Australian child protection laws, this is a poignant story about finding the courage to stand up, speak out and fight against injustice. The sterling Australian cast includes Jack Thompson, Aden Young, Susie Porter and Rachel Griffiths, as well as the Missy Higgins single Torchlight. Dir Tori Garrett, Australia. June 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 WHITELEY (M) 94min A visual journey into the private life and creative legacy of Australia’s most iconic artist, Brett Whiteley. Whiteley’s artworks were made across just 30 years, but their ongoing impact on Australia’s creative culture is extraordinary: he blazed a trail that still lights a path forward for a new generation of artists. This wonderfully vivid documentary is told in Brett’s own voice, and uses personal letters, notebooks and photographs, interwoven with reconstructions, animations, archival interviews and rare footage. Dir James Bogle, Australia. June 18, 19, 23 100% THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE (M) 126min The beautifully depicted real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski, have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, they are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. To fight back on their own terms the couple covertly begin working with the Resistance. Dir Niki Caro, UK. June 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 NERUDA (MA 15+) 108min A glorious mix of history and imagination, this is a lavishly mounted and grandly entertaining depiction of the 1940s manhunt for exiled Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda. Beloved by the populace, Pablo and his wife Delia slip underground and are pursued by incompetent, vainglorious police inspector Oscar Peluchonneau (the superb Gael García Bernal), hoping to make a name for himself by capturing the country’s most infamous fugitive. Gripping, funny and ingeniously conceived. Dir Pablo Larraín, Chile. English subtitles. June 9, 10, 11, 12 THE COUNTRY DOCTOR (M) 102min François Cluzet is Jean-Pierre, a much-loved doctor in a rural French town. He reassures and cares for his patients day and night, seven days a week. When he becomes sick himself, he keeps this a secret, but soon realises that he needs to find someone to take over his practice. A younger city doctor, Nathalie (Marianne Denicourt), is introduced as the new medic - will she adapt to this new life and take over from the man who thought he was irreplaceable? A touching celebration of life. Dir Thomas Lilti, France. English subtitles. June 2, 3, 4, 5 90% DENIAL (M) 110min Professor Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) attracted the ire of World War II historian David Irving (Timothy Spall) when she included him in her book about Holocaust deniers. Irving accused her of libel, and sparked a legal battle that pulled Lipstadt into a fraught limelight. Under British law, in a libel case the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. A fascinating adaptation of the acclaimed book ‘History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier’. Dir Mick Jackson, UK. June 2, 3, 4, 5 THE SENSE OF AN ENDING (M) 108min A drama of regret and the ambiguities of memory starring Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling. Tony Webster is divorced and retired, but his past comes out from the shadows due to a sudden inheritance. Memories of an early girlfriend, Veronica, flood his mind. Forced to reflect upon his past, he digs deep into his recollections of first love and the devastating consequences of actions he took long ago. A thoughtful, intelligent film that explores how memory contributes to how we contextualise our lives. Dir Ritesh Batra, UK. June 16, 17, 18, 19 p.t.o for cinetopia screenings THE CASE FOR CHRIST (PG) 113min Hard-driving journalist Lee Strobel is exactly where he expects to be in his job at the Chicago Tribune: on top. But at home, his wife Leslie’s newfound faith in Christ goes against everything Lee believes – or didn’t believe – as an avowed atheist. Utilising his journalistic and legal skills, he begins a quest to debunk the claims of Christianity in order to save his marriage, leading to unexpected results that could change everything he knows to be true. Based on Strobel’s bestselling book and starring Mike Vogel, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster. Dir Jon Gunn, USA. June 29, 30 NORMAN (M) 118min Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer tells the story of Norman Oppenheimer (Richard Gere) who lives in the margins of New York City power and money, a would-be operator dreaming up financial schemes that never come to fruition. He befriends a young politician at a low point in his life and three years later, when the politician becomes an influential world leader, Norman’s life dramatically changes for better and worse. Gere shines alongside the likes of Michael Sheen, Steve Buscemi and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Dir Joseph Cedar, USA. Starts June 30 87% VICEROY’S HOUSE (PG) 106min An opulently stylish period drama recounting the end of an empire and the birth of two nations. Viceroy’s House tells the true story of the final months of British rule in India. Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson are Lord and Lady Mountbatten, the last Viceroys, charged with being Britain’s representatives in handing India back to its people. Through the eyes of the Mountbattens, and two of Viceroy House’s employees, Jeet and Aalia, the end of Empire is witnessed, along with the dawn of a glorious new age for India.
