Cinematography Shot Types
High-angle Shot
A shot taken from above the subject. Used to show vulnerability or danger to the subject of the shot.
Low-angle Shot
A shot taken from beneath an object or person, looking up. Puts emphasis on power, importance or danger of the subject.
Two Shot
Always used to show two sides of a conversation and establish the relationship between the two people in shot.
POV Shot
A shot showing exactly what the character is seeing from where they are seeing it.
Medium Close-Up
Shot of a character from the torso up.
Establishing Shot
Establishes the scene, sets the location of the scene.
Close-Up
Puts emphasis on the character or object in shot.
Extreme Close-Up
Shows detailed emotion and isolates character or object in shot. Usually contains little to no background.
Long Shot
Shot allowing full body movement to be caught on camera.
Over the Shoulder
Self-explanatory, usually only used in conversational scenes.
