The weeks seem to have flown by since we held the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema in March. Over 1,500 visitors flocked to Bo’ness for the three days – many local and many travelling, in some cases, from as far afield as London, Brighton, and even France! The figures were fantastic with five complete sell-outs. But perhaps even more precious was the wonderful atmosphere. Time and again I sat amongst an audience literally helpless with laughter or on the edge of their seats, thrilling to the spectacle of the early film classics. The auditorium was filled with folk of all ages and for many of them this was their first experience of silent film with live musical accompaniment. For me, and a number of others according to the feedback, the Festival counted amongst the best cinema experiences we have ever had.

Neil Brand was, for many of you, the shining star of the weekend and it turns out he feels the same way about us! In a post-festival interview Mr Brand said “I have just had the most wonderful time here. You do come away from these sort of gigs thinking: I wish every gig could be like this… There’s a sense of community spirit about it… that has been the most important thing of all, and I feel very honoured to have been part of this.” It bodes well for our 2012 100th anniversary celebrations so watch this space for exciting updates…

You don’t have to wait a year for more silent films though. This season we are screening a stunning new restoration of ‘The Great White Silence’ about Scott of the Antarctic, plus a Charlie Chaplin classic ‘The Gold Rush’ (with soundtrack performed by Neil Brand!). The latter has been programmed as part of ‘Funny in Falkirk’ – Central Scotland’s comedy festival – along with a whole week of funny films, being my picks of the greatest comedy titles from the ‘twenties and each decade to the ‘sixties (plus a bang up-to-date feature). But because one person’s fish is another person’s 'poisson' we’re giving you the chance to nominate your favourite funny film to be screened at the Hippodrome during the ‘Funny in Falkirk’ opening weekend. See page 14 for details of prizes and how to enter.

At the Hippodrome we’ll be screening all the big summer family blockbusters over the holidays plus a great selection for the grown-ups ranging from the long awaited ‘Hangover’ sequel, action fantasies, drama, horror and thrillers to documentaries and classics. Look out in the programme for a slightly different screening schedule for the holiday season with some extra day-time screenings as well.

The trend for comic book adaptations seems unabated and our picks for this season are the X-Men prequel which looks to be first class (geddit?), ‘The Green Lantern’ and a film featuring the feisty Adele Blanc-Sec – the French female answer to Indiana Jones I’m told. As ever we are well-covered for Scottish productions too with screenings of the loveable documentary ‘Jig’, the drama ‘Island’, shot on Mull, plus our headline special event featuring a Q&A with the director of a new feature filmed in Edinburgh: ‘The Space Between’.

This season’s jeely jar special (remember your clean jam jar and lid) stars the swashbuckling Errol Flynn in ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ on 27th Aug just in time to get you in the mood for the Knights themed Kinneil Heritage Day on the 28th.

By the way… in our unofficial Thursday ‘alternative’ night do come along to see ‘Red Hill’ if you can. An independent Australian film featuring a town under siege being protected by a good marshal called Shane… which leaves me to ponder: Can a film be a Western if it not set in the States? Discuss!

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec A marvellous turn of the century romp based on the popular French cartoon stories of Jacque Tardi and brought to fantastical life by director Luc Besson (‘The Big Blue’ and ‘Leon’) and the winning performance of Louise Bourgoin as the eponymous young adventuress who will go to any lengths to achieve her aims, including dealing with suitors, the cops, monsters and a recently hatched, 136 million-year old pterodactyl egg. Described perfectly by Empire magazine as “Amelie’ meets Indiana Jones” this is a thrilling and funny adventure pic of the first order.

Submarine A joyous first feature directed by Richard Ayoade (best known as the nerdy one in ‘The IT Crowd’) about a 15 year-old boy with two things on his mind: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to stop his mother (Hawkins) from leaving his father for a motivational speaker (Considine). The young cast match the excellence of the adult performers, whilst Ayoade’s brilliant script and keen cinematic eye mark him out as a fine new British big-screen talent. Definitely not to be missed.

Little White Lies A breezy, hilarious and sometimes deeply touching drama about a group of Parisian friends on their annual jaunt to the well-appointed seaside home of the screamingly up-tight Max. They drink wine, share meals, take excursions and hang-out. Predictably but satisfyingly, secrets emerge and tensions erupt whilst a long shadow is cast by the absent friend they chose to leave behind rather than sharing the vigil by his hospital bed. The ensemble cast is a treat and the well-executed running jokes are nicely balanced with the sensitively drawn relationships.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides cert tbc

Johnny Depp returns to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale laced with all the fun, adventure and humour that ignited this successful movie franchise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz) he can’t be sure if she’s the lost love of his life or a ruthless con-artist using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. The starry pair are joined by a raft of A-listers and ‘Pirates’ veterans: Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Jack’s longtime comrade Gibbs.

Cedar Rapids Tim, is stuck in a rut, but his world-view is blown apart when he is despatched from his sleepy Midwestern town to Cedar Rapids for a do-or-die insurance convention, in a bid to save his company. Here he falls under the spell of his more experienced roommates and the seductive insurance agent (Heche). This well-written culture-clash comedy about an ageing character forced out of his comfort zone is warm and charming with a certain ‘Jimmy Stewart’ quality. If you enjoyed ‘Sideways’ this is the film for you.

Separated from her protector, equipped with a literally ‘encyclopaedic’ knowledge but no understanding of the emotional context of the real world, Hanna is pitched into deadly battle with ruthless operative (Blanchett) who herself harbours secrets tying her to the exiled pair. Joe Wright (‘Atonement’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’) weaves elements of dark fairy tales into this pacey adventure thriller.

The Hangover Part II

Red Hill The tellingly named Shane Cooper (Kwanten, HBO’s ‘True Blood’) is a young police officer who reports to duty in the remote Australian town of Red Hill. Given a frosty welcome from the cantankerous police chief, Shane’s first day at work takes a turn for the worse when news comes in of an escaped convict heading for town and hell-bent on revenge. Perhaps down to the fact of being independently financed, or the striking cinematography and distinguished performances, this is a satisfyingly superior genre piece that marries indigenous rights issues with stylish action shoot-outs.

After pulling out as director of X-Men 3 to make independent features ‘Stardust’ and ‘Kick Ass’ British maverick Matthew Vaughn has finally returned to the Studio fold to direct this first class X prequel. The film sees the emergence of a friendship between Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier: two Mutants who form the first X-team to save the world from destruction. In the process a rift between them is opened and the eternal war begins between Erik, aka Magneto, and Professor X (immortalised by Patrick Stewart and played here by McAvoy).

Win Win Giametti (the up-tight one in ‘Sideways’) plays middle-aged everyman Mike – a self-employed lawyer and hobbying wrestling coach whose business and team are similarly flailing. Luck seems to smile on him when a morally dubious financial arrangement coincides with the arrival of a runaway teenager who turns out to be championship material. However, as Mike’s initial deception gives way to confusion the crises begin to stack up against him. An enjoyable and funny heart-warmer from the multi-talented Thomas McCarthy (director: ‘The Station Agent’, writer: ‘Up’, actor: ‘The Wire’!).

Julia's Eyes A deeply creepy psychological thriller/horror about a woman determined to uncover what she suspects to be the foul play behind her twin’s suicide. Rueda, so memorable for her harrowing performance in ‘The Orphanage’, – also produced by del Toro – is compelling as the heroine, slowly being overtaken by blindness in a familiar thriller film trope, brilliantly rendered by the cinematographer’s play of light, shadow and subtly blurred images that has the audience seeing through Julia’s eyes as she navigates the murky, murderous goings-on.

The modern comic book movie revival, launched with the original X-Men, herewith welcomes a new entry to its cannon with this adaptation of the popular DC Comics classic. Like ‘Iron Man’ before him, this superhero is plunged reluctantly into responsibility and must shape up quickly to save the world.

Point BlankCavayé follows up his effective thriller, ‘Pour Elle’ (remade last year as ‘The Next Three Days’ with Russell Crowe) with another full-throttle genre pic, again about an ordinary man pushed to extraordinary limits this time when he becomes entangled with feuding gangsters, his pregnant wife is kidnapped, and he must fall in with an injured runaway in order to outwit corrupt cops and rescue the woman he loves. A white-knuckle ride from start to finish, this is another triumph from the man whom many are dubbing “the new master of suspense”.

The Conspirator A well cast, provocative and suspenseful period drama which deals with the trial of the woman charged with the assassination of President Lincoln on the grounds that she ran the boarding-house where the conspirators plotted their attacks. One of the many striking aspects of Robert Redford’s accomplished and stately directorial account of the so-called ‘Surratt case’, is the comparison he draws between the actions of the then US administration and the Bush government’s in the wake of ‘9/11’ – specifically the suspension of treasured constitutional rights.

Further evidence of the trend of excellence in the Australian film industry is provided aplenty with this powerful drama about a family’s reaction to the tragedy of a father’s untimely death. Bereaved eight year-old Simone takes to climbing, and even living in, the fig that dominates their front garden, believing that her dead father’s soul resides in the towering tree and whilst initially sympathetic the family soon urge her to move on. Gorgeously filmed without being showy (the tree seems to become a character itself) and complemented by a Gregorian chant-influenced score.

The Space Between The Hippodrome is delighted to welcome cast and crew from Lyre Productions’ new feature written and directed by Tim Barrow (producer of their debut award-winning Scottish road movie ‘The Inheritance’, Hipppodrome Jun – Aug 2009 season). Shot in Edinburgh over 17 days in glorious summer, on a tiny budget, ‘The Space Between’ is a tale of love, loss and redemption which follows two strangers, struggling with grief and given a chance to turn their lives around. This is a rewarding film, making atmospheric use of the Edinburgh locations and distinctive light quality, with a poignant specially composed soundtrack by Fiona Rutherford winner of the Clàrsach Society’s 2010 Competition for Young Composers.

Tim Barrow will present the film and the screening will be followed by a Question and Answer session.

The Great White Silence A hundred and one years ago the British Antarctic Expedition, led by Captain Scott, set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since. Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the preparations for the assault on the Pole. 1n 1924 Ponting re-edited his footage into this remarkable feature, complete with vivid tinting and toning. The BFI National Archive has restored the film using the latest photochemical and digital techniques and reintroduced the film’s sophisticated use of colour. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and the world of the expedition revealed in brilliant detail. This stunning re-issue features a new score by Simon Fisher Turner.

The Gold Rush Chaplin’s film that sees the Tramp go to the Klondike in the hope of finding gold contains some of his funniest scenes including the genuinely iconic sequence when, starving and desperate, he dines with relish on his worn leather boot. When the film was released, the scene when Charlie spears his bread rolls with forks and animates them in an impromptu ballet was reportedly so popular with audiences that projectionists were known to have stopped the film to play it again. Chaplin himself is quoted as saying this is “the picture I want to be remembered by” and at the Hippodrome we invite you to do just that.

Funny in Falkirk Opening Night Film

Central Scotland’s comedy festival, Funny in Falkirk returns to venues throughout the area (Fri 22 Jul – Tue 2 Aug) and to open proceedings the Hippodrome presents a new film about the cut-throat world of stand-up. Ben Miller, of ‘Armstrong and Miller’ fame, directs an adaptation of his own stage play which follows Warren – an Eric Morcambe wannabe looking for his Ernie, who believes he’s found his perfect partner after a random encounter with a waiter with a side-line in ventriloquism.

Featuring cameo appearances from practically every currently working British comedian tonight’s special screening will be introduced by a surprise Comedy guest from the cast.

Box Office and Booking Information

The Hippodrome Box Office is open Saturdays 10:15am - 2:30pm, and also opens 45 minutes before, and closes 15 minutes after the start of each screening.

There is usually no need to book, but tickets can be booked in advance during the open hours OR from the Steeple Box Office (Tel: 01324 506850), Monday to Saturday, 9:30am - 4:45pm. Telephone bookings are subject to a 50p booking fee. Reserved tickets must be paid for within 3 days, or no later than 30 minutes prior to the screening. Tickets will be released for re-sale otherwise

Refunds

Tickets will not be exchanged or money refunded after purchase except in the event of cancellation of screening/activity by Falkirk Council.

Refreshments

The Hippodrome Café and Licensed Bar opens 45 minutes before each screening and closes at the start of the screening. Popcorn, ice-cream, sweets, tea, coffee and soft drinks are available from the Café. Beer, wine, and spirits are available from the Licensed Bar. Please note: Children and young people are not permitted to approach the bar. No person under the age of 18 years is permitted to purchase alcohol. Proof of age may be requested. Only food and drink purchased on the premises may be consumed.
