Cinderella is a story of transformation and new beginnings – what better story to unfold on our stage as we look forward to our 75th Anniversary Season. We are reminded of our humble beginnings as a summer stock theatre and the people who have blessed the theatre with their many gifts.

We are excited to have many members of the Olney Theatre Cen-ter family return in Cinderella. Director Bobby Smith, along with Musical Director Chris Youstra, lead our cast and crew of very tal-ented individuals to bring this fantastical musical to life with such whimsy and magic.

Cinderella wouldn’t be possible without the gracious support of our 2012 Season Sponsor, Mr. Robert Dohmen. We’d also like to thank our show sponsors, Vernon L. Skinner, Jr., Sandy Spring Bank, Kath-leen Quinn and Senator Jennie M. Forehand and William Forehand. We would like to most especially thank you, of course, our audience for your continuous patronage!

In addition to Mr. Smith and Mr. Youstra’s return, we celebrate the return of Paul Morella with his one-man rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas. Audiences were enchanted by this classic tale last year, and we are proud to bring it back this year.

This is an exciting time for the Theatre. We are not only celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2013, but also reflecting back on the history of what Olney Theatre Center means to so many generations. Season 2013 has already started to turn some heads and it is sure to bring a mixture of shows for all tastes. As we continue to look forward, we honor the traditions you have looked forward to each year. One of those traditions being the family musical presented during the holiday season, and 2013 is no excep-tion with the enchanting and funny family musical Once Upon a Mattress opening this time next year.

Many thanks and enjoy the show!

I am honored to return for another holiday season and join Amy Marshall and our new artistic director Martin Platt in bringing to life a fairy tale that lives in the heart of every child and adult. Literature, folklore and fairy tales all reflect our need for redemption no matter what culture, time or belief system. The story of Cinderella embodies timeless human desires and fantasies – virtues/immoralities and dreams of remarkable good fortune come true. If we look closely, it spells out our own encounters in life. The efforts to overcome problems using wisdom as the magical force to attain success of a certain matter. The hardships we go through and the rewards from a sudden awakening of our own mind, like a magical force, we are able to see our rewards more clearly after hardship. Could part of the story’s popularity be attributed to years of immigrant success stories? Perhaps that may have given the rags-to-riches plot a special sheen and why it has been retold so many times in so many languages.

When we consider the story, the first thought is that we don’t want to tell children that they can solve problems with magic. But if we peel back the layers and look at what it promotes, it isn’t really about magic. Magic is just a convenient way to make the story understandable to children. Looking at the true theme, the real message is that justice will prevail and ”impossible things” are blessings that are happening to us everyday. So much for the adult opinion. As fairy tales go, it would not be proper to offer my words without a child’s input to properly balance these notes.

“Cinderella is a captivating story, and it’s hard not to love! The magic, the romance, the emotion - it’s wonderful!” – Hanna, Grade 5.“I think Cinderella is a wonderful, magical story. It has a beautiful message: Even though others are mean to you, you still can be nice to them, and: It’s good to do a bit of service, or: Even in rags you are beautiful by your actions.” – Nora, Grade 3.“Cinderella never gave up and listened to her stepmother, even when she treated her very bitterly.” – Philip, Grade 4

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

Cinderella_Program_times.indd 11 10/31/12 3:47 PM

Page 14: CINDERELLA Program

WHO’S WHO IN THE CASTWhy do we keep returning to the story of Cinderella and her fabulous transformation? Many of us have grown up with the wicked stepmother, the cheerless hearth and the slipper of glass; these images have become an indelible part of childhood for us all. Yet the Cinderella we know today is significantly altered from the Ash Girl tales handed down for at least a thousand years.

The earliest recorded version of the tale comes from China, where it was written down by Tuan Ch’eng-shih in the middle of the ninth century. Rather than a fairy godmother, a magical fish helps Yeh-shen, the heroine of the Chinese tale. The Grimm Brothers’ story from 1812, known as Aschenputtel, or Ash Girl, is, as their name suggests, significantly grimmer than other popular tellings. The heroine plants a tree on her mother’s grave from which all of the magical help appears in the form of a white dove. At the end, the stepsisters’ eyes are pecked out by birds from the tree to punish them for their cruelty. The story we are familiar with comes from the second recorded version of the tale, written by Charles Perrault in 1697. He introduced the fairy godmother, the pumpkin carriage, the animal servants, and the glass slippers.

All of these enchanted delights and more were incorporated into Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical, which was originally presented on television in 1957. Starring Julie Andrews, it was the most widely viewed program in the history of television. It was remade twice, in 1965 and in 1997. After the success of the 1997 version, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization came out with Cinderella (Enchanted Version) based on the teleplay. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.

The tradition of storytelling has always had an educational component. Many “fairy” tales were actually “cautionary” tales used to teach young people the dangers of the world and how to protect themselves. No other tale expresses so powerfully the experiences of a young child in the throes of sibling rivalry and the feelings of being pushed down and bullied. As a cautionary tale, Cinderella gives hope to the child that eventually she will be delivered from her misery, and that hidden under rags and ash, her true merit will shine through.

— Meghan Twible, Education Intern

NOTES ON THE SONGS IN THIS VERSION OF CINDERELLA

The majority of the songs in this version or Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA are taken from the original 1956 television production, which starred Julie Andrews. The original TV version ran 76 minutes. In creating the stage version, additional songs were woven into the story by the R&H folks to create a full evening’s stage musical.

‘The Sweetest Sounds’ has music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers from his 1962 musical NO STRINGS. This show was written after Hammerstein’s death and is the only musical for which Rodgers provided the words and music.

‘The Loneliness of Evening’ was originally written for the 1949 musical SOUTH PACIFIC, but was cut before the show’s successful Broadway opening.

‘There’s Music in You’ was written for the 1953 musical ME & JULIET (but not used) and was featured in the 1953 film MAIN STREET TO BROADWAY, where it was sung by Mary Martin.
