Controversy with oil: seizing private refineries and uses it as “political leverage” with other countries

Has been accused of moving towards an authoritarian government like that of Cuba—has close ties to countries like Cuba, Iraq, Iran, and China.

Bogotá

Colombia has substantial oil reserves and is a major producer of gold, silver, emeralds, platinum and coal. But it has also been ravaged by a decades-long violent conflict involving outlawed armed groups, drug cartels and gross violations of human rights.

Quito

Ecuador is a patchwork of indigenous communities, including people of colonial Spanish origins and the descendants of African slaves. Its capital, Quito, once a part of the Inca empire, has some of the best-preserved early colonial architecture on the continent.

Also, “Ecuador” means equator.

Lima

Peru's rich and varied heritage includes the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco and the lost city of Machu Picchu. The country boasts spectacular scenery, including Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. It is rich in copper, silver, lead, zinc, oil and gold. Despite this, Peru's progress has been held back by corruption and the failure of successive governments to deal with social and economic inequality.

La Paz (Sucre)

A country of statistical extremes, landlocked Bolivia is the highest and most isolated country in South America. It has the largest proportion of indigenous people, who make up around two-thirds of the population, and is the world's largest producer of tin.

Page 65: CINCO MINUTOS 1. Define our Tiger ROAR expectations 2. Write down as many words in Spanish that you may already know.

Why two capital cities?

Sucre is home to the judicial branch of the government.

La Paz is home to the president and congress.

Sucre was the historical capital, but when the tin mining business started booming near La Paz, the bosses of the mining companies wanted the government moved near them.

Hence, there are two capitals.

Up to 95% of Paraguayans are mestizos, people of mixed Spanish and native American descent. Many speak the language of the indigenous Guarani; the rest are bilingual or only speak Spanish. There is a Japanese community, a legacy of post World War II migration. With few mineral resources, Paraguay's economy revolves around agriculture.

Montevideo

Uruguay has traditionally been better off than many other countries in South America, and is known for its advanced education and social security systems and liberal laws governing social issues such as divorce. It was among the first nations in Latin America to establish a welfare state, maintained through relatively high taxes on industry.

Page 68: CINCO MINUTOS 1. Define our Tiger ROAR expectations 2. Write down as many words in Spanish that you may already know.

Santiago

Chile is one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations. It has been relatively free of the coups and arbitrary governments that have blighted the continent. The exception was the 17-year rule of General Augusto Pinochet, whose 1973 coup was one of the bloodiest in 20th-century Latin America and whose dictatorship left more than 3,000 people dead and missing.

Buenos Aires

Argentina stretches 4,000 km from its sub-tropical north to the sub-antarctic south. Its terrain includes part of the Andes mountain range, swamps, the plains of the Pampas and a long coastline. Its people have had to struggle with military dictatorship, a lost war over the Falkland Islands, and severe economic difficulties.
