John Riley DAR Celebrates 120 Years

CCSAR Posts Colors at the 120th Anniversary of the John Riley DAR Chapter

On Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 1:00 PM the John Riley Chapter of the Daughters of the American

Revolution (JRC) hosted a formal Tea at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, 101 S Monument Avenue,

Hamilton, OH. The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR)’s Nolan Carson

Memorial Color Guard posted the 50 star flag of the USA, the Ohio State flag and the Flag of the DAR

behind the podium in the 3rd floor hall at the Fitton Center and amongst the CCSAR’s Captain Howard

Miller Memorial Flag Collection.

To help celebrate the 120th anniversary of the chapter’s founding in the DAR organization which was

only five years old in 1896, the daughters decided to use the elegant “Tea”. After a 30 minute “meet and

greet’ accompanied by harp music played by harpist Jackie Davis food was presented to the tables, Ohio

State Regent Sandy McCann was escorted to her table by Sword carrying CCSAR President Michael

Gunn, people seated and welcomed by JRC Regent Valerie Wilke.

Regent Wilke also led the DAR Ritual and a Blessing accompanied by harpist Davis and her rendition of

Amazing Grace. She then declared it was time to enjoy Tea, Sandwiches & Sweets.

The day’s program started with proclamations to JRC from Mayors Miller and Moeller from Fairfield and

Hamilton, a salutation from National DAR President General Lynn Young and a proclamation from Ohio

Society SAR President James Schaffer. Special honored guest OSDAR Regent Sandy McCann gave a

presentation, more than 20 other honored guests were present from various DAR, SAR and other local

organizations from the tri-state area. Finally, the tea servers, freshman girls from Badin High School were

thanked for their service.

Before closing remarks Regent Wilke recognized special DAR members, veterans from men and

women’s units and the DAR husbands. A parting prayer and “God Bless America” preceded the Nolan

Carson Memorial Color Guard, commanded by Michael Gunn retiring the colors.

April Honor Flight Return at CVG on 4/19/16

Seventy-two Tri-State veterans were treated to a one-of-a-kind trip to the nation’s capital with the first

Honor Flight of 2016 which departed Tuesday morning from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International

Airport for Washington D.C.

The honorary veterans visited memorials and participated in ceremonies that honor their service to our

country. The trip is at no cost to the vets, a small token of appreciation for all they have done.

They say they are grateful for the opportunity and expect

to have an emotional experience. Honor Flight Tri-State

selects veterans from Greater Cincinnati, Northern

Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.

The day’s excursion included visits to the World War II

Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War

Memorial, Iwo Jima, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the

U.S. Air Force Memorial and other popular Washington

D.C. sights. Their return was through a posting of colors

by Compatriots Michael Blum, Michael Gunn and 20

others.

The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution joined other local groups like the

Emerald Pipe Band who welcomed the vets home at 10:30 p.m. at CVG in the baggage claim level of the

terminal.
