The additional important arteries of the body which are used in the Coronary Arterial Bypass surgery

In today's day and age, diseases of the coronary arteries are one of the leading causes of premature death.

Whenever a blockage is detected within an artery it is possible to treat it with medication or angioplasty, though only up to a certain extent. But, when diseases (blockages) are present in multiple arteries, it becomes necessary to undergo a coronary artery bypass surgery for which excess arteries present in the body itself are used. These additional arteries are grafted before and after the blockage thus it is referred to as Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery.

In the front portion of our chest, God has placed one extra artery each on the left and right-hand side that, in medical terminology, are known as Left & Right Internal Mammary Artery. It is a miracle of nature that diseases rarely occur in these arteries and in fact, they are in fairly good condition until the late stages of our life. Thus, these arteries are most often used for the surgery.

The second preference for use in the surgery is often given to arteries of the hand (Radial Artery). The specialty of the radial artery is that it is of good length due to which it can be used in performing the bypass surgery for multiple arteries. The main vein of leg, the saphenous vein, is also used a lot in surgeries. The specialty of this vein is that it can be easily removed from the leg, many times which turns out to be a boon in case of emergency surgery. In using these arteries, there are some disadvantages too, such as pain development in the area from which the artery has been taken. Also, there can be a loss of sensation in the harvesting area but these are not considered to be critical problems.

In order to extend the life of a bypass surgery, it is necessary to take a few precautions such as maintaining a strict diet, refraining from tobacco, performing light exercises etc.

Lasers in Cancer Treatment

The word LASER stands for Light Amplification by

Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser light is different

from regular light. The light from the sun or from a light

bulb has many wavelengths and spreads out in all

directions. Laser light, on the other hand, has a single

wavelength and can be focused in a very narrow beam.

This makes it both powerful and precise. Lasers can be

used instead of blades (scalpels) for very careful surgical

work such as cutting through body tissue.

Types of lasers

Many types of lasers are used to treat

medical problems. Today, 3 kinds of lasers are

commonly used in cancer treatment: carbon

dioxide (CO2), argon and neodymium:

yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG).

Carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers

The CO2 laser is mainly a surgical tool. It can

cut or vaporize (dissolve) tissue with fairly

little bleeding as the light energy changes to heat. This

type of laser is used to remove thin layers from the surface

of the skin without going into the deeper layers.

Argon Lasers

The argon laser only goes a short distance into tissue. It's

sometime used during colonoscopies (tests to look for

colon cancer) to remove growths called Polyps before they

become cancer.

Nd:YAG ( Neodymium : Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet)

Light from this laser can go deeper into tissue than light

from other types of lasers. This light can also travel

through optical fibers which can be bent and put into a

tumor to heat it up and destroy it.

Advantages of Laser Surgery

Lasers are more precise and exact than blades (scalpels).

of infection. Since laser heat seals blood vessels there is

less bleeding, swelling, pain or scarring. Laser surgery may

mean less cutting and damage to healthy tissues. More

procedures may be done in outpatient settings. Healing

time is often shorter.

Disadvantages of Laser Surgery

Laser equipment costs a lot of money and is bulky

compared to the usual surgical tools used. Strict safety

precautions must be followed in the operating room when

lasers are used. The entire surgical team and the patient

must wear eye protection.

Treating Cancer With Lasers

u To cut or incise and excise various pre-cancerous

lesions like leukoplakia and erythroplakia

To take incisional biopsies of various oral cancers

To shrink or destroy a tumor with heat

Trans-oral endoscopic laser excision of upper

aerodigstive and laryngeal cancers

Small tumors on the vocal cords may be treated with

lasers instead of radiation in some patients

Tumors blocking the upper airway can be partly

removed to make breathing easier.

Laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) . The

laser light is passed through a fiber optic wire and

right into a tumor, where it heats up, damaging or

killing cancer cells.

In addition, lasers can seal nerve endings to reduce pain

after surgery and seal lymph vessels to reduce swelling

and limit the spread of tumor cells.

Though lasers can be used alone, they are most often used

with other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or

radiation.
