2 Brief Summary
The BA Honours Sustainable Performance Management and the MSc Strategic Business Management courses are exciting opportunities for CIMA members to gain an advanced qualification that represents the next step on their professional ladder, or an opportunity to advance or change their career. The one‐year online courses feature extensive student, group and supervisor interaction to provide a flexible and supportive environment for your studies. There are no set lecture times and students are able to work through the units at their own pace. This does not mean that the student is ‘on their own’, and with tailored interactive learning material, regular Skype sessions with specialist academics as well as the ability to interact with fellow students, the learning experience is a rich and rewarding one.

SECTION D ‐ TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT 29 Articulation of Graduate Prospects
The CIMA online programme is intended to complement and expand the Continuous Professional Development offering of CIMA. The target group are all CIMA members worldwide who desire to expand or top up on their educational experience. The curriculum content as specified in the following sections has been agreed between CIMA and Manchester Met as providing added value in the management accounting and professional arena, expanding on the already extensive curriculum provided by CIMA’s education programmes. The title MSc Strategic Business Management can also be awarded for face to face delivery of this programme as part of the existing Accounting, Finance and Economics department’s advanced standing offering. This is in order to widen the audience for this programme as some CIMA qualified students would prefer face to face delivery.
30 Curriculum Design
BA (Hons) Sustainable Performance Management: Both units “Accounting and Management Control” as well as “Ethics and Sustainability Accounting” reflect topic areas where both Manchester Met and CIMA perceive that a greater knowledge and understanding will allow students to achieve meaningful “continuous professional development” and contribute along with the pre‐existing CIMA qualifications to achieving learning outcomes G01–G07and PL01‐PL06. MSc Strategic Business Management: The “Key Issues in Business and Management,” “Academic and Professional Development” as well as “Dissertation” units provide both methodology knowledge and application practice to CIMA members and affiliates wishing to acquire or expand their knowledge to independently research complex issues. Both the Manchester Met and CIMA perceive that this greater knowledge and understanding will allow students to achieve meaningful “continuous professional development” and contribute along with the pre‐existing CIMA qualifications to achieving learning outcomes G01–G07and PL01‐PL09.
31 Learning and Teaching
BA (Hons) Sustainable Performance Management: The delivery of the learning units within the programme is designed around the learner and will support various learning styles. The delivery of the two Manchester Met delivered 30 credit units is online utilising a multimedia interactive platform. Each unit is made up of a series of 20 sessions with each session introducing the student to new concepts and theories. The learner is supported by audio and visual representations of the content with tutor support available for each session. The experience is deepened via the exposure to Manchester Met’s extensive online library that students are expected to utilise along with ‘real world’ examples designed to give commercial focus and employability skills. Students have 20 weeks from the last enrolment date to work through unit learning materials and an additional two weeks to complete the summative assessment. Students are supported throughout their learning experience and are able to pose questions to their tutors at any time during the course. Students are also able to develop relationships with their peers where academic issues may be discussed and explored.
PARM1.1
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CASQE Page 12 of 23 Programme Specification
There are 4 discussion topics posed by the tutor during a 30 credit unit. The discussion topics are designed to enhance the learning experience, expand learning horizons, develop critical reasoning skills and help students develop their professional language skills via interaction with their diverse peer group. As a formative exercise, the course asks students to ‘constructively participate’ in at least 2 discussions per unit, this are be monitored by tutors. MSc Strategic Business Management: It is envisaged that students will be geographically spread over different time zones. The 30 credit unit will be therefore (self) delivered to/by students in the form of a web based interactive programme consisting of 20 weekly sessions. It will be supported by tutor(s) available at specific times for (mainly) email but (occasionally) video or voice link communications. Video pod casts will be used at crucial moments to ensure that students are aware of attainment expectations, tutor support limitations, etc. or to demonstrate and explain particular academic concepts or models. Efforts will be made to provide specific feedback to students early in the learning process to guide them in the attainment of the learning objectives. Web based self‐directed and/or managed group work will be used to assist in the practical development of professional skills which will be treated in an academic manner in the weekly sessions. The sessions and group work will, in addition, be supported by course notes, directed reading and the online learning platform. The title MSc Strategic Business Management can also be awarded for face to face delivery of this programme as part of the existing Accounting, Finance and Economics department’s advanced standing offering. This is in order to widen the audience for this programme as some CIMA qualified students would prefer face to face delivery.
32 Assessment
BA (Hons) Sustainable Performance Management: Formative assessment is varied and engaging. Students are required to attempt a range of multiple choice questions at the end of each of the 20 sessions to crystallise their learning. More expansive discursive questions are also set that students are expected to attempt with walkthrough solutions given. Participation in the discussions mentioned above is a formative exercise. In order to enhance the formative learning experience from the discussions students are also asked to reflect on their learning and submit two reflective questionnaires. Summative assessment takes the form of a report and related presentations. Students are supported in the production of their assignments via academic ‘skills’ sessions at quarterly milestones through the unit. These ‘skills’ sessions develop academic skills and guide the student to their application to the assignments. MSc Strategic Business Management: Summative assessment takes the form of individual reflective work and a business research report. This unit prepares students for the dissertation and is a prerequisite of the dissertation. The dissertation is supported on‐line. There are some initial sessions guiding the students through preparation of the proposal. Students are then supported by a dissertation supervisor. Students
PARM1.1
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CASQE Page 13 of 23 Programme Specification
will be required to submit their dissertation for formative assessment at key milestones. Students will have 8 months to complete their dissertation.
33 Inclusive Practice
The programme complies with the University's Equality and Diversity Policy and interacts with all CIMA members who can access online material and communicate via email/telephone or Skype.
34 Technology Enhanced Learning
The online courses use a VLE hosted and developed by Course Source Ltd. to provide the material and interactive features to students. The course content has been authored by Manchester Met personnel which has then been “re shaped” into an interesting and exciting visual medium. Where appropriate links have been made between Turnitin on the Manchester Met Moodle VLE system to facilitate the submission and administration of the summative assignments. The Course Source VLE environment also hosts an active discussion forum forming an essential part of the delivery process.
35 Placement and/or Work‐based Learning Activities
All students are CIMA members with an average age of 30+ and invariably have employment. Placements are not appropriate for these students.
36 Engagement with Employers
All students are CIMA members invariably with employment or are self‐employed working in 30+ countries worldwide. Employee involvement programmes are not appropriate for these students.
37 Personal Development Planning
This CIMA programme is not specifically aimed at introducing students to personal development planning. Much of the knowledge and application skill regarding this important area has already been acquired in previous CIMA foundation and professional courses. These courses are specifically designed as “top up” or “continuous professional development” courses and as such will have been chosen by CIMA members in the course of implementation of their personal and professional development plans. However, taking the previous statement into account, the programme still aims to introduce a substantial amount of reflective skill development, an essential component of PDP plans, as described in sections 31 and 32 while the MSc course will further develop critical reading and thinking skills.
