Scenario: Prepare and test a template to provision a CICS SMSS instance as a service provider

Goal: Demonstrate how a service provider can prepare and test a template that provisions a CICS SMSS instance. The resulting template will be used by a consumer who wants to provision a CICS SMSS instance.

Note: Some values shown in this document will differ from the values you see on your z/OSMF system. For example, your user ID will be different than the user ID that was used to create the examples in this document.

Log into z/OSMF component of z/OS


1. Point the browser to the URL provided for use with this system.• If the browser asks to add an exception for the certificate, do so.

2. Click Log in

3. Log in with the service provider credentials that were provided to you.

Work with the Cloud Provisioning task


The main tasks related to Cloud provisioning on z/OS are in the Cloud Provisioning category.• Resource Management lets

you define and manage cloud provisioning resources such as domains and tenants.

• Software Services lets you define and manage software services using templates.

Expand the Cloud Provisioning category, then click Software Services.

You may remember from the consumer scenario that the Resource Management task was not visible when you logged in as a consumer.

Software Services: Overview tab


The Software Services page is displayed. • The Overview tab shows summary

information in graphic form.• The Templates tab shows templates,

which consist of z/OMF workflows and associated actions and variables that can be used to provision middleware.

• The Instances tab shows instances, which represent middleware that has been provisioned using templates.

What you see on the Overview page reflects the templates and instances on your system.

Add a template


The next step in provisioning software is to add a template. You add a template using files and information supplied by the middleware provider.

Click Templates.

Typically you begin by reading the information that was provided by the middleware vendor, which explains the files that they supply for creating a template. For this scenario, we assume that has already happened.

The Templates tab shows a table of software service templates. The template you add will appear in this table.

Click Add Template.

On the Add Template panel, you specify the files and properties for a template. Loading a template source file is a shortcut to supplying those values.

1. Select or type the path for the template source file: /u/zcldpa1/cloudProvision/cics/smss.mf

2. Click Load.

1. Verify that the target domain is set to default. A domain is a set of systems.

Values for the workflow, actions, and workflow variables input files have been populated. Now supply just the template name.

2. Type CICS_SMSS_1 in the Template Name field.

3. Click OK.

The actions file defines actions that you will be able to take against the instance that is created from this template.

As z/OSMF processes the request to create the template, the state of this template begins as Pending Security Update.

Scroll down, then click Refresh to see the updated state.

You may want to modify template properties or the files associated with the template.

To get familiar with the Workflow Editor, which is a tool for learning about and modifying the workflow, you will use it to change an input variable.

Click Edit to open the workflow file in the Workflow Editor.

Evaluate the workflow


Click Steps.

The Workflow Editor lets you view and edit the workflow definition, without needing to know the syntax of workflow XML.

It organizes information about the workflow on tabs. The Metadata tab contains metadata for the workflow.

The Steps tab shows the steps of the workflow. A step is a logical unit of work. It describes a specific activity that the workflow performs.

1. Click the radio button next toStep No. 13: validateCICSVariables.

2. Notice the Overview pane that appears to the right(shown on the next slide).

The Overview pane on the right allows you to evaluate additional properties of the workflow.

Click the Step Type tab.

Click Input Properties.

The Variables tab shows the variables for the workflow. Variables can be referenced by workflow steps for substitution in step instructions and templates, and for calls to REST interfaces.

The Input Properties tab shows the input properties file, which supplies default values for input variables that are defined in the workflow definition file. It is a series of name –value pairs. You can change a value by typing over the existing value.

Before you use the template to provision a CICS SMSS instance, you must connect it to cloud provisioning resources using the Resource Management task.

Click Resource Management.

The Resources page shows:• Domains (set of systems).• Tenants (groups of users for a selected

domain).

A default domain is always available. You may recall selecting the default domain when you added the template.

You need to connect the templateto a tenant for the default domain.

Select the default domain, which is the domain that you specified when adding the template.

There is a default tenant for the default domain.

Scroll down the page to view the tenants that are associated with this domain.

To associate the template to thetenant, you modify the tenant.

1. In the Tenants table, select the default tenant. 2. Click Actions to display a menu. 3. Select Modify...

The Modify Tenant window lets you change the properties of a tenant.

The Templates table shows the templates for this tenant. You need to add your template.

1. In the Templates table, click Actions to display a menu. 2. Select Add….

On the Add Template and Resource Pool page, you first identify the template. Then you provide the remainder of the required fields.

1. Supply values for the required fields, as follows:• Select Template: Click the arrow to show the list, then select

the template that you added. Software service instance name prefix: Use SNA APPLID.

• Number of software services instances limit: 1.

The network administrator whose z/OSMF user ID is zcldpa4 must complete the network pool definition. Click OK to proceed.

You have now associated the template that you created with a tenant.

You are returned to the Resources page. You will now log in as the network administrator to complete the setup of the network resource pool.

Before you use the template to provision a CICS SMSS region, you must connect it to a network resource pool using the Configuration Assistant task.

Expand the Configuration category, then select Configuration Assistant.

The domain that the network resource pool was created in, default, is selected. Click Proceed.

Note the network resource pool created in the Resource Management task default.default.CICS_SMSS_1, and that the completion status is Incomplete.

The network resource pool completion status is now complete, and the network resources have been connected to the CICS_SMSS_1 template thatyou are in the process of creating.

You will now resume the creation of the template in Software Services.

The state of the template you are adding is Draft Pending Approvals. The approver must approve before you can use the template to provision an instance.

This means that you need to log in to z/OSMF using the approver’s user ID. (You’re filling this role as well today.)

1. Type zcldpa5 for the user ID.2. Type the password that was

provided to for that user ID.3. Click Log in.

You are now logged in as the domain approver.

You want to return to the templates table.

1. Expand the Cloud Provisioning category, then click Software Services.

The state of the template is still Draft Pending Approvals. Now that you are logged in as domain approver, you can perform the approval.

1. In the software service templates table, select the template.

2. Click Actions to display a menu. 3. Select Approvals.

The Approvals page shows the approvals that are required. You should see the domain approver user ID, zcldpa5, in the first column of the Approvers table.

1. In the Approvers table, select the user ID zcldpa5.

Click OK.

A confirmation dialog is displayed. Note that In this case, the approval is for the domain approver. In other cases, approvals might be required for individual workflow steps or for actions.

Click Close to Return to Templates.

The approval is complete, and the status has been updated to Approved.

The state of the template is now Draft Approved.

You are done with your job as an approver and can login with your service provider user ID again.

Test run a template


Your template is ready to use!

From the templates table, you can do a test run of your template to confirm that it provisions a CICS SMSS instance instance as expected. This test run is an important step before you make the template available to consumers.

1. Select your template.2. Click Actions to display a menu.3. Select Test Run….

2. Click OK to run the template. This tells z/OSMF to provision the software.

The Test Run window is displayed, and shows the properties of the template.

1. Verify that the Associated Tenant is set to default.

The software services instance that was created is shown in the table. The state begins as Being-Provisioned. When provisioning is successful, the state will change to Provisioned. This will take approximately 3 minutes.

A message indicates the name of the software services instance that was created, which varies.

Scroll down the page and click Refresh.

To verify that the template successfully provisioned the CICS SMSS instance, view the properties of the instance.

Deprovision the instance


Now that you have confirmed that the template is ready for use, you can deprovision the test instance to free up system resources.

The actions that are available with Perform are defined in the actions definition file that is associated with the template. These typically include deprovision.

The state changes to Published. This means that the template is available to consumers. The template is also locked. No further changes can be made.
