Welcome 1stgraders!Get ready for an enjoyable year!
Developing CommunityIn my classroom, I want my
students to feel safe and comfortable. Starting at the beginning of the school year, I will allow my students to work together and become familiar with their classmates in order to provide a positive learning environment. It is important that differences are celebrated and valued to develop a sense of community. The classroom will be decorated with the work of my students to reflect the uniqueness and individual creativity ofeach student.

Classroom Procedures
Student ExpectationsAt the beginning of the year, the students are
expected to have all materials that are asked of. These materials should be in their desks so that they are prepared and ready for all lessons and activities.
As first graders, I am hoping to get my students to practice the routine of turning their homework in at the beginning of the day. They will be given take home folders that has a “keep at home” and “Return” side. My students will be expected to bring these folders to school each day and turn them in to the tray at the front of the room.

I think it is important to include lessons on all different cultures in the classroom. I invite any parent or guardian to come into the classroom to inform and teach our students more about a tradition or cultural difference that is important to your family. I will incorporate different cultural literature in my lessons, and I will make sure they have knowledge from different perspectives. I want them to become more aware of worldly cultures so that they have a better understanding of the world we live in. We will have group decisions, and I will encourage my students to have open minds and listen to others.
Embracing Diversity
Management Strategy
Homework Return PolicyStudents are expected to come to
school with their homework completed. The homework should be on the “return” side of their folder. A parent or guardian should sign the assignments with a “please sign” stamp on it the day it is assigned. If the child comes to school with incomplete homework, they will put it in their red folder and stay in for recess until their work is completed. A note will also be sent home explaining that homework needs to be completed and that the child stayed in for recess to get their work done.
RewardsThere will be a sticker chart at the front of the classroom for the students to place stickers depending on what color they are on for the day. If they are on green, they will add 2 stickers. If they are on yellow, they will add 1, and if they are on red no stickers will be awarded. When the entire sticker chart is full, the student will receive a prize from the treasure box. They will also get a nice letter home expressing the good behavior that is being seen in the classroom. Positive verbal praises will also be used frequently during lessons and activities.
Card System
When a student misbehaves, these are the following steps that will be taken:
1st – Student is given a verbal warning
2nd – Change card from Green to Yellow (and lose 5 minutes of recess)
3rd – Change card from Yellow to Red (and lose an entire recess)
At the end of each day, parents can ask their child what color they were on. This will give them an idea of how their child behaved. If the child ends the day on red, a poor behavior note will be sent home explaining the behavior that was seen.

More Information…
Student Absences
Attending school is very important. However, if a child is sick, a parent phone call on the day that school will be missed would be appreciated. If a child will be missing school for any other reason such as for a doctor’s appointment, a phone call or a note in advance with the parent’s signature should be sent to the school. Missed workwill be in a folder in the office forthe parent or guardian to pick upfrom the school.
Job Chart
Students will be randomly selected to hold a job position in the classroom. I will inform the students of their job at the beginning of each day. The jobs will be changed each day so that the children get experience with each responsibility. They will be expected to do their job to their best ability.
