CIBJO is an international confederation of national jewellery trade organizations and commercial bodies.

CIBJO was founded in Paris in 1926 as BIBOA, an organization whose mission was to represent and advance the interests of the jewellery trade in Europe.

It was restructured as CIBJO (Confédération International de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des Diamants, Perles et Pierres) in 1961, with a global rather than a continental focus.

The CIBJO Blue Books are definitive set of standards for grading, nomenclature and grading-methodology. Blue Books have been compiled for diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls and precious metals, and for the operation of gemmological laboratories. The Blue Books were produced and are consistently updated by the respective CIBJO commissions and represent a consensus of opinion within the jewellery industry.

In the absence of ISO-approved terminology, the CIBJO Blue Books are commonly referred to in official forums. In 2006 the CIBJO Blue Book was relied upon by a panel of three judges in a district court in Munich, Germany, which issued a restraining order to the German distributor of gem-quality synthetic diamonds to cease using the term ‘cultured diamonds’ when marketing its products to the public. Legal commentators suggest that the verdict has legal authority in other European Union countries.

As part of its mission, CIBJO has consistently sought to raise the level of knowledge and professional expertise of members of the international jewellery industry.

A SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION

To further this goal, CIBJO has released a series of publications, including the highly regarded Retailer’s Reference Guide.

In 2006, CIBJO became the only organisation in the international diamond, gemstone and jewellery sectors ever to receive official consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

UNITED NATIONS RECOGNITION OF CIBJO

The status enables CIBJO, on behalf of the international gemstone and jewellery industries, to advance the programmes and goals of the United Nations by serving as a technical expert, adviser and consultant to governments and the UN Secretariat.

THE CAPE TOWN DECLARATION

In 2007 CIBJO held its congress on the African continent for the first time. During the event, the organisation issued the Cape Town Declaration, which recognised that the jewellery industry, as a member of the international business community, shares a responsibility toward the greater society. It so doing, CIBJO committed the jewellery industry to advancing the fulfillment of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals.

In December 2008, CIBJO established the World Jewellery Confederation Education Foundation, or WJCEF. It goal is to educate members of the jewellery, diamond and gemstone industries, from all over the world and in all sectors of the business, about the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability, and how they may implement these principles in their operations. The WJCEF program was designed together with the United Nations, which assigned a team of experts to work together with CIBJO.

UNITAR WEEK AT SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010

In September 2010, CIBJO and WJCEF were invited by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research to help organise a two-day workshop in Corporate Social Responsibility in the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. The workshop examined the incorporation of CSR in the work environment, and the jewellery sector was selected to serve as a primary case study of an industry that has done just that.

which was officially opened in Antwerp, Belgium, in March 2010.

The Centre of Excellence, which is housed in a dedicated building provided by the City of Antwerp, is operated by the United Nations International Training Centre for Corporate Opportunities (ITCCO), and aims to stimulate businesses around the world to embrace the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Together with UNITAR, CIBJO and WJCEF were the prime movers behind the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for CSR training in the international jewellery and

Trust and integrity are principles upon which the jewellery and gemstone business have traditionally rested. The stories about deal worth millions of dollars being sealed without written contracts, but by a handshake, are not legends but actual fact.

What happened over the past 10 years is that we have become more appreciative of how our business impacts upon others, both negatively and positively, and we have used this knowledge to change the way in which we operate.
