Survival Strategies inWomen’s Imaging 2013

2013ChicagoInternationalBreast Course

The Society forthe AdvancementofWomen’s ImagingAnnualMeeting

PROGRAMDESCRIPTIONThis program is designed to provide radiologists and other breast and women’s imaging health care professionalswith advances in the detection, diagnosis, management and treatment of breast cancer and benign breast abnormalities. This year, our focus will be on breast ultrasound to bring attendees up-to-date on the latest technology and methodologyfor handheld and automated ultrasound for all clinical indications of this modality. We are excited to announce that this year’s CIBC/SAWI symposium, always at the forefront, will contain a MiniCourseon breast ultrasound. Guide to Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis with US offers over 8 hours of Category 1CME credits in breast ultrasound, including 3 hours in hands-on workshops for performance and interpretationof supine automated ultrasound, as well as training in handheld whole breast ultrasound. Please see page 4 for more information.

EDUCATIONAL GOALSAt the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:• Understand the political and economic forces that shape health policy• Characterize breast lesions using the ACR BI-RADS®• Apply anatomic, physiologic and pathologic features, including multimodality correlation,to correct image interpretation

• Understand what is meant by “overdiagnosis”• Adjust US systems for image optimization and understand ways to integrate supplemental screeningwith US into your practice

• Recognize the indications for, and the selection and utilization of, the appropriate percutaneousimage-guided breast interventional procedures

• Describe the management of high-risk breast lesions and how imaging influences selectionof surgical procedures

• Recognize radiation doses of common X-ray examinations including mammography, PET,nuclear medicine and high-resolution CT scans

• Describe the mechanics of tomosynthesis and how this modality can reducefalse positive mammography interpretations

• Understand imaging triage and work up of infertility, and complications of pregnancy• Identify osteoporosis, its causes and treatments• Recognize US and MR findings in benign and malignant pelvic abnormalities in women

ACCREDITATIONThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policiesof the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of theInstitute for Advanced Medical Education and the Society for the Advancement of Women’s Imaging. The Institute for Advanced Medical Education is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuingmedical education for physicians. The Institute for Advanced Medical Education designates thislive activity for a maximum of 29.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.™ Physicians should only claimcredit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CREDIT HOURS, SAMs and RT CREDITSAttendees can earn 18 credits for the Chicago International Breast Course, 12.75 credits for SAWI,26.25 credits for CIBC & SAWI combined, up to 3 credits for the optional workshops and 3 SAM credits.CATEGORY A CREDITS FOR RTs: Application for Category A credits is pending with AHRA.The program lists modality-specific credits being offered at the conference according to the following codes:

Women’s Health and Women’s Imaging have long held importantpolitical and corporate capital, now accentuated by a heightenedawareness among women of the limitations imposed onmammography by breast density with possible increased breastcancer risk. Advocacy groups have successfully pressured statelegislatures to enact laws that require breast density informationto be communicated to women following their mammograms, and in many cases suggesting that supplemental screening, suchas US or MRI, should be considered. Even where reimbursementhas been mandated, lack of trained personnel and already fullpatient schedules have created accessibility issues for womenseeking these studies, which will largely fall to ultrasound.

Despite US’s excellent imaging capabilities, its broadened use hasbeen inhibited by the false positive rates, management dilemmas, difficulties with sonoanatomy and image optimization.Whileautomated ultrasound technology can provide an answer forsome practices, its efficient use requires significant experience.Similarly, training in handheld realtime ultrasound performed byeither physician or sonographer has been focused on correlationwith mammographic or MRI findings, explanation of patientcomplaints or clinical findings, or guidance of interventionalprocedures rather than detection of unsuspected abnormalities.

The goal of the Minicourse will be to equip practitioners withthe training and experience needed to include whole breastultrasound within their practices. Breast sonographers as wellas physicians are encouraged to attend. All participants willreceive a Certificate of Completion.
