so. We provide that solution in the orm

o a ubiquitous dashboard showing the

real time impact o people’s behaviourwithin PANDORA on the environment

complete with personal hardware which

publically displays the virtuousness o each

individual, and a persuasive interace which

conveys inormation to help them realise

PANDORA’s potential as one o the greenest

buildings around.

Abstract

Technology is only as good as the people

using it. In situations where technology

gives people the power to reduce theirenvironmental impact, the ull potential o

that technology remains unrealised unless

people have the incentive to use it correctly.

PANDORA is ull o green technology,

but it lacks is an understanding o how

humans can subvert that technology, and

a solution to discourage them rom doing

vehicle. Research has shown that this

increased awareness improved driving

styles to such an extent, that the additional

improvements o the dashboard, compared

to the hybrid engine alone were signicant.

Furthermore, research in the UK has shown

that i this eect could be harnessed on

smart meters, energy consumption o

buildings could be reduced by as much as

15%.

We have taken the Prius Eect and appliedit on a much grander scale than has been

previously envisioned: creating a media

acade plus internal points o visualisation

to ubiquitously inorm people o how their

behaviour within PANDORA inuences its

consumption o energy. In doing so, we

aim to support PANDORA’s goal o being a

building with sustainability at its heart.

The second tenant is connectedness. We

wanted to create a acade which a wide

range o people could interact with on a

meaningul level, whether or not they were

actually inside the building. This is critically

important to PANDORA, which is designed

as a home or nomadic workers: those

workers who will oten work remotely and

Introduction

We propose to create a dashboard or

PANDORA, called CIAO. The CIAO concept is

built on two tenants, inspired by PANDORA:

sustainability and connectedness.

PANDORA is built on green technology,

but lacks inrastructure to help people use

that technology to its ullest potential. We

propose a ubiquitous dashboard which will

alter people’s behaviour by making them

aware o how their behaviour aects theworld around them. The key insight behind

this is known as the “Prius Eect”.

When the Prius was developed it was

given a hybrid engine which would

intelligently switch between gasoline and

electric power, making it one o the most

environmentally riendly mass market cars.

However, Toyota engineers also added

an extra design eature to enhance its

green capabilities – a dashboard, clearly

displaying uel and power consumption to

the driver. This enabled people to see not

only how the technology in their car was

working to reduce uel consumption, but

also how their individual driving behaviour

impacted the green perormance o the

people thereby increasing the range and

quality o visualisations available. This also

makes it much more easible to requently

change the content o the media acade

making it more interesting and exciting

or the people who see it requentlySecond, we hope that by increasing the

contribution which people can make to

CIAO, this will increase the strength o the

Prius Eect, because people have a higher

stake in it. Thirdly, CIAO as an open source

platorm has the potential to create a rea

community o users, composed not only o

people who use the building, but also those

people who engage with the project rom

urther aeld.

The media acade hence orth acts as

through visual and behaviorial interaction

visit the building sporadically. We thereore

wanted to create an interaction which was

inclusive – accessible to many people – and

also connected users together, connected

that community o users to PANDORA, and

connected PANDORA to the world. We thereore created a dashboard which

is completely open source. This means

that anyone can use the platorm to

access relevant data showing the energy

consumption o PANDORA. Anyone can

use that data to create a visualisation

which will be displayed ubiquitously within

and outside PANDORA in order positively

inuence the behaviour o people within

through the Prius Eect.

There are three main benets o making

this platorm open source. First, we harness

the power o collective intelligence. By

opening up CIAO to anyone who wants to

use it, we give it the opportunity to benet

rom the talents and expertise o many

+ Watermark Project

Designer: Chris Bodle

Location: Bristol, UK

Concept: The Watermark Project was an

visual installation to project the uture ood

level in the city due to the potential rising

water level on various buildings within thecity.

Process:   The projection created a strong

indicative warning signal to public about

the potential crisis aced by the city. It

visualized an abstract concept o the rising

water level in three dimensional space.

Technology: Signicant: “By displaying

these levels in real space, the project aimed

to help the audience imagine the depth

and extent o this potential uture ooding

– allowing us to measure the possible uture

water levels against ourselves in amiliar

environments.”

Designer: Stanza

Location: Trondheim, Norway

Concept: “The acade presents the

emotional real time state o the city o

Trondheim by using live data, and CCTV

images to represent the Nova Building as aliving breathing entity.”

Process: In the installation, three strands

are involved, they included 1) data

collection: to collect environmental data

rom sensors in the urban environment

2) data visualization: to convert collected

data to online real time visualization; and 3)

city data o Trondheim display: to interpret

micro data o the city and display both the

realtime environmental and emotiona

state o the city online, and the outputs

will become the real time projection on the

VISUALIZATION and DATA INTERACTION.

Data Selection- Ciao as an open source

platorm allows the users to choose the

data they wish to visualize. Being easy

downloadable sotware, Ciao can be

installed and run on any operating system.

For data selection Ciao provides the user

six broad categories o data type related

to the green perormance o Pandora,

which are water, energy, uel, air, waste and

temperature. Each o these allows the userto extract the consumption or ambient

real-time data rom the monitoring devices,

sensors and building management system

built in Pandora. Specic data in context

o Pandora describing the consumption

source and location o consumption area

can be selected. For instance, i the user

in interested in the energy consumption

patterns o Pandora, all he has to do is

click on energy icon, which gives options

or various consumption sources like

computers, lighting, air-condition &

heating or even others. It also suggests

the locations o 1st oor, 2nd oor, 3rd

oor and so on, rom where the energy

consumption data can be extracted. Thus,

Technology:   The acade employed multi-

sensor network with sensors installed on

dierent buildings. The sensors monitor

temperatures, sounds, noise, light, vibration,

humidity and gps. Then the data is ormated

in both PHP and XML and shared openly to

allow other people to make visualization or

interpretation o it.

Signifcant:   The acade is signicant in

two aspects, one is the visualization o

the environment condition by the acadein a graphical means to reect a real time

state o the city. This allow citizens to have

better understanding o the city. Second,

the collected data is openly accessible

on internet, thus it encouraged dierent

people to involve and participate in the

visualization o the city.

Project Description

Ciao as an open source platorm is

designed to inuence behaviour

change. As mentioned earlier the basic

principles governing the design o Ciao

are sustainability and connectedness. To

achieve this Ciao engages the users in

three processes: DATA SELECTION, DATA

media; it becomes pervasive in Pandora

environment. The public display is on a)

exterior media acade, b) interior display

screens, c) interactive staircase and persona

on a) responsive hardware, b) desktops or

laptops and c) mobile phones.

Data Interaction- The prius eect created

by Ciao in Pandora results in the meaning

o data through a public visualization

reaching out to various users o Pandora

The visualization creates a competitivconversation around the eco-riendliness

o each individual. This not just instigates

them to improve their perormance but also

persuades the users to engage with Ciao

visualization either on a personal or even

public display. This Ciao visualization maps

the user’s position on to the visualization

and gives suggestions about how they

can contribute to the green perormance

o Pandora. For instance, to relation to

the energy consumption o the building

Ciao suggests the individual according to

his position in Pondora to turn o surplus

lighting, open the window blinds or simply

to take o the coat. These behavioura

actions are then recorded by Ciao and the

Ciao acilities the open engagement o data

with the users and gives them autonomy

to make their own selection with various

permutations and combinations o data

type. In more elaborate versions on Ciao

the data is envision to be extracted rom

global sources.

DataVisualization-Ciao provides a platorm

or either visualising this user selected data

or extracting it in raw spreadsheet ormat.

In case the user opts or visualising the data,Ciao provided several deault visualisation

options like tree map, distortion, bubble

map, stacks, timeline, bars, pie and layouts.

It even leaves room or interested users to

upload their own visualization semantic

type. This allows open source growth and

development o Ciao. Ater the user selects

the visualization type, the sample appears

on the screen. In case the user is satised

with the output, he can sent it to Ciao, or

share it on social networking website like

acebook, twitter or even email it to riends.

All the visualizations sent to Ciao server are

reviewed by a managing team or approval.

I the visualization output is approved, it is

the displayed on both public and personal

source platorm are the ollowing:

1. What is the purpose o the platorm?

2. Who are the contributors?

3. How are contributors engaged?

4.How restrictive are design specications?

5.What is the process or selecting

contributions?

We studied the ollowing diverse range o

platorms to understand the relationship

between these 5 aspects:•Android: a smartphone App development

platorm

•iOS: a smartphone App development

platorm

•Scratch: Simple game development

platorm with a graphical user interace

•Threadless: T-shirt design and sales

platorm

•Local Motors: Car design platform

•Arduino: Hardware prototyping platform

To understand the complexities o creating

a community o users or an open source

platorm, the answers to each o those

ve questions must be ully aligned. For

example, a platorm which is designed

users are rewarded every time they engage

in green activity. This is how Ciao aects

and changes the behaviour o people.

Implementation proposal

The implementation o CIAO was a key

consideration during our design process,

as the difculties inherent in mobilizing a

community o users around a new open

source platorm cannot be underestimated.

We thereore conducted extensive researchon existing open source platorms, and

used these learnings to guide our design

and implementation decisions.

Supporting research and analysis o

open source platorms

  The importance o understanding how

to mobilise people to use an open source

technology cannot be understated. We

looked to several open source platorms

to understand how they had built their

communities o users and what motivates

people to participate. This research lies at

the heart o our implementation proposal.

The most important attributes o an open

o “Founder Member”), or the oer o some

kind o standalone value, which makes

using the platorm attractive even withoutthe existence o a wider social network

around it.

A nal important learning rom the research

was that where there is a community around

a platorm, there is generally a selection

process or identiying and championing

the best creations, and community

members participate in this selection

process. The ormer aspect takes advantage

o user’s desire or social capital within the

group, and the latter allows those users

who do not possess the required skills to be

selected maintain a stake in the community

and not get disheartened and disengage.

We take all three learnings into account in

our implementation proposal.

with an educational purpose or unskilled

beginners will ail i its design specications

are very lose, because the platorm is likely

to be too complex or beginners to use.

By limiting the scope o what users can

do with the platorm, it becomes much

more achievable or beginners to learn and

thereore attractive to its target users.

This also highlights a second key principle,

namely that users must have a well-dened

and concrete reason or engagement.Study o the above platorms revealed three

main motivations: nancial, educational,

and social. Social motivations were the

most complex to achieve, given that

there is an inherent rst-mover problem.

The social motivation is characterised by

gaining personal satisaction or cultural

capital by creating something which will

be experienced by a community whose

opinions or wellbeing users care about.

Attracting the rst users is difcult as

they must be persuaded to engage with

a platorm even beore that community

exists. Means o persuasion are usually

either the promise o an important position

within the uture community (e.g. the status

Implementing CIAO

1. What is the purpose o the

platorm?

CIAO’s purpose is to make PANDORA one o

the greenest and most connected buildings

in the world. It does this through providing

an open source dashboard which allows

people to see the impact o their behavior

on the energy consumption o the building,

and creates a community o users.

2. Who are the contributors?

We had the explicit goal o making PANDORA

as inclusive as possible. The contributors are

thereore workers within PANDORA, citizens

o Venice, and interested people in the world

at large. The CIAO interace is thereore

designed with a graphical user interace

to be incredibly simple to use, inspired by

beginners programming sotware, Scratch.

It thereore has relatively stringent design

specications. However, we also wanted to

harness the abilities o users who are very

skilled in data visualization, and did not

want to limit their creative potential. CIAO

users can thereore select rom pre-existing

visualizations (which requires no pre-

existing programming skills), or i they are

more experienced, they can upload their

own creations.

3. How are contributors engaged?

In recognition o the rst-mover problem

identied above, we recommend three

phases o engagement.

Phase 1 should target only those people

who work within PANDORA. This is to takeadvantage o the act there is a pre-existing

community o workers within PANDORA,

which can initially serve as a proxy or the

eventual wider community which CIAO

will build. It will be possible, thereore,

to motivate people through the social

capital which can be generated within their

community o co-workers, using internal

competitions and prominent displays o the

identity o the people whose visualizations

are displayed.

Phase 2 should target interested people

around the world through careully directed

and thereore low-cost publicity. This could

include individuals and organizations

interested in human behavior, the impact

o buildings on the environment, and data

visualisation. The opportunity to directly

deploy their skills/interests or an innovative

project will serve as a useul motivator

or these people, as it is aligned with their

chosen elds. Targeting these people as a

second step will also raise the prole o the

project.

Phase 3 should mobilize ordinary peoplearound Venice and the world, ater the

community has built up momentum. By

this time a meaningul community will

exist, thereby increasing the incentive to

participate. Targeted mobilization at this

stage could come rom e.g. schools and

universities, where contributions could be

mandated.

4. How restrictive are design

specifcations?

The platorm has two tiers o stringency

or design specications, to allow both

non-skilled and skilled users to participate

People with little or no previous experience

in creating data visualizations can select

rom a stock o visualizations provided

by CIAO, making the design specications

particularly restrictive. However, more

experienced people can design their owncreations and upload them. This allows or

much greater creativity.

 5. What is the process or selecting

contributions?

In the case o CIAO a selection process

is necessary due to the limited number

o places in which a visualisation can be

Fig 20 :

CIAO User Interace

Prototype

8/2/2019 Ciao Paper Final

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ciao-paper-final 14/14

displayed and the limited amount o time

it can be displayed or. It also has the added

benet o strengthening users’ sense o

belonging to a community, i they are

permitted to participate in the selection

process. Initially, thereore, we recommend

allowing workers within PANDORA to vote

on their preerred visualisations. As the

community expands beyond PANDORA, so

should the scope o the people allowed to

participate in the selection process.

Conclusion

CIAO helps PANDORA to become the best

environment or the uture o nomadic

work in two ways. First, it creates a com-

mon purpose and sense o community or agroup o people who otherwise might eel

disconnected rom each other and their

workplace. Second, it creates an incredibly

green and sustainable environment which

showcases the ull potential o the technol-

ogy embedded within, becoming a gold

standard or other structures.

Currently, CIAO ocuses only on the per-

ormance o PANDORA itsel. We see two

extensions to this work, made possible by

accessing other data sources. First, i build-

ings in the rest o Venice, Italy and the world

also opened up the data rom their building

management systems, CIAO could become

a platorm or comparing the efciency

across buildings, thereby encouraging oth-

ers to improve their efciency to the same

standard as PANDORA. Second, i CIAO can

extract data rom other online open sourc-

es, it could reect on the global energy per-

ormance, comparing Venice with other cit-

ies.
