Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici - The Italian International Institute

Italian Language and Culture at LdMFounded in 1973 in Florence, Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM) is among Italy’s most comprehensive and well-established international institutions, offering Italian Language courses as well as academic programs in higher education. LdM has premises in Florence, Rome and Tuscania, and thanks to over 45 years of experience and research in teaching Italian Language and Culture to foreigners, LdM is able to offer its students the highest quality education at an academic level.

LdM Florence is located in the historic district of San Lorenzo, close to the famous Medici Chapel and the San Lorenzo Market. The campus encompasses 14 buildings in the historic city center. LdM Florence is perfect for students looking for an exciting blend of didactic offerings and cultural activities and bustling city-life, as well as an easy access to the tranquil Tuscan countryside. Courses at LdM Rome take place in a beautiful 19th century palace on Via XX Settembre, in the government and business district. The city’s unique metropolitan environment is comprised of small, lively neighbourhoods and picturesque districts. LdM Tuscania offers the opportunity to experience a true cultural immersion within the intimate setting of a medieval town located in central Italy, in the breathtaking countryside of the Maremma (about one hour drive from Rome). An untouched natural setting hosts a surprisingly large number of Etruscan necropolises and is home to the remains of ancient civilizations, which can be found all over the town and in the surrounding area. The school is situated in an elegantly modern structure in the old town center and is incorporated into the medieval stone walls.

More about LdM – Academic and professional programs

Alongside the variety of courses in Italian Language and Culture (all taught in Italian), LdM also offers a wide range of both academic and professional programs taught in English in fine arts, design, culinary arts, and more, and is a well-established member of the following associations, forums and federations:

• EDUITALIA - EduItalia Consortium • ELIA - European League of Institutes of the Arts • Forum of Education Abroad • IALC - International Association of Language Centres • NAFSA - National Association of Foreign Student Advisors

LdM was awarded the Languagecourse.net “Excellence Award” in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017, based on customer satisfaction and outstanding service.

LdM is authorized by the Ministry of Education, University and Research in Italy (decree dated December 2, 1989) and it has been awarded the European quality certification ISO 9001:2015 by EQA.

Teaching Philosophy

By studying Italian Language at LdM, you will improve in all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - all presented in context and emphasized by dramatization and role play.Learning a new language is more than just learning grammar and vocabulary. To really learn Italian, you must also understand its culture. At LdM you will discover new facts about Italy and its different regions, listen to Italian music, watch Italian films, read and discuss Italian books and newspapers.

The small number of students in each class and our international student body help you to actively participate in the learning process. Here you will find constant interaction between teachers and LdM students from all over the world. Speaking Italian, students discover together everything that Italy has to offer, not only within the classroom walls but also beyond.

We also take you outside the classroom to give you the opportunity to put in practice what you have learned. From trips to the market, visits to Italian universities to meet Italian students, and other similar activities, you will be able to feel confident in your new language. As you discover more about Italy and interact with real Italians, your desire to speak Italian and understand Italy and its culture will grow.

Our teaching will take you...

Who We Are

We at LdM are a group of academically trained professors specialized in teaching Italian. We are all native Italian speakers who graduated from Italian Universities, and are both passionate and motivated about what we do. We have a lot of experience in teaching Italian language and culture to foreign students, but you never stop learning! Therefore, we hold workshops for our team to share and develop new teaching techniques together, as well as attend professional seminars and international conferences.LdM enthusiastic team of full-time academic coordinators constantly works on designing and creating new course material while it collaborates with teachers to meet individual student needs.

At LdM we think that the best way to learn Italian is feeling part of the surrounding Italian community. By acting as cultural facilitators, we help our students to achieve the intercultural learning experience they are seeking. In an effort to promote cultural exchange, our faculty constantly works to develop local relationships with institutions such as: The Comune di Firenze, Regione Toscana, University of Florence, Comune di Tuscania, Local Authority of Provincial Culture in Viterbo, Tuscania Tourist Office and Public Library, and the Local Authority of Regional Culture in Lazio.

With its Cooking School Cucina Lorenzo de’ Medici, LdM Florence offers a new experience to all those who love food and its preparation and who want to discover important aspects of the Italian way of life, while acquiring culinary knowledge. Thanks to the Cooking School Cucina Lorenzo de’ Medici, food lovers have the opportunity to participate in cooking courses held in the charming backdrop of the Mercato Centrale – a historic market in the beating heart of the San Lorenzo area - and in direct contact with the market’s food producers and vendors, the so-called Artisans of Taste.

A true passion for rich Italian cultural heritage and a strong interest in the culinary traditions of this country and its generous flavors are the reasons why the Institute has expanded in the north-west of Italy with a new Cooking School in Turin. A refined city, rich in history and art, and once the capital of Italy, Turin is a cultural and gastronomy crossroad between Italy and Europe.

Lessons are in Italian or English.
