Transcript of Ci 350 unit plan revised
MAIN OBJECTIVE
Unit Plan: Genetics
• My students will be introduced to the history, structure, and function of DNA, how it becomes proteins, genotypes, phenotypes, and genetic disorders by listening to a podcast, viewing posters, robotics, watching videos, reading blogs, and exploring WebQuests. They will be extracting DNA, virtually transcribing DNA, translating mRNA, synthesizing proteins, and surveying genetic traits, analyzing pedigrees, and diagnosing genetic disorders by the end of the unit with 80% accuracy.
Day-by-Day
Day 1: Introduction to DNA, its discovery, and structure
Day 2: DNA extraction and DNA ploidy
Day 3: Transcription, Translation, and Protein Synthesis
Day 4: Genotypes and Phenotypes
Day 5: Genetic Disorders and Pedigree Analyses
Use of Technology
Videos will offer great visuals of processes and provide a “flipped classroom” concept.
Virtual Labs will offer transcription, translation, and protein synthesis practice as well as Pedigree experiences.
The smart board will allow me to show DNA images and videos. WebQuests Vokis Internet access will allow students to research genetic concepts
on their own and view online posters. Computer speakers will allow students to listen to podcasts. Blogs will offer students an opportunity to discuss controversial
genetic topics. Robotics will provide an amusing demonstration of DNA
synthesis. Video cameras will allow students to record their experiments.
