Students will explore issues of civic importance such as healthy schools, community planning, environmental responsibility, and the influence of social media, while developing their understanding of the role of civic engagement and of political processes in the local, national, and/or global community. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate, and express informed opinions about, a range of political issues and developments that are both of significance in today’s world and of personal interest to them. Note: This is a nine week course worth 0.5 credits, completed first term of the semester. Second term students will have GLC2O Careers (Grade 10 Open) worth 0.5 credits with another teacher. OVERALL EXPECTATIONS By the end of this course, students will: The land where we gather is the ancestral and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation of the Anishinaabek Peoples. A. Political Inquiry & Skill Development (throughout the course) 1. BIG IDEAS ‣ Learn what it means to be a responsible, active and informed Citizen ‣ Gain an understanding how Canada’s democratic system functions ‣ Learn how to think and act critically, creatively and politically on public issues

SEQUENCE OF LEARNING & EVALUATION

***Term Work (70%) + Course Culminating (30%) = Final Course Grade (100%)***

Formative assessments are used to improve student learning by providing varied opportunities to demonstrate an understanding of course expectations in preparation for summative evaluations. Summative evaluations test groups of key expectations. Failure to complete a summative evaluation may result in the expectations of the course not being met and the credit not being granted.

C. Civic Engagement & Action

1. Civic Contributions: analyse a variety of civic contributions, and ways in which people can contribute to the common good

2. Inclusion & Participation: assess ways in which people express their perspectives on issues of civic importance and how various perspectives, beliefs, and values are recognized and represented in communities in Canada

3. Personal Action on Civic Issues: analyse a civic issue of personal interest and develop a plan of action to address it

TERM WORK - 70% of final grade Most consistent level of achievement with special consideration given to more recent evidence.
