Down on the Allotments
Allotment Holders have been once again working hard to
tame their plots from weeds by using weed suppressant
material to cover their plots and growing through small
holes cuts into the material to grow their crops – less
time spent weeding – great news. Making raised beds
from recycled wood also seems very popular this season
to grow their crops in, these new innovated ways seems
to be very popular as allotment holders pass on to others
their new ideas.
Lots of growers have been taking advantage of the use of
poly-tunnels being approved by the committee expanding
what can be grown with the help of these tunnels adding
tomatoes, cucumbers, chilies, pepper, salad items, there
is even a few allotment holders growing melons and figs
as a more unusual exotic crop. We look forward to the
allotment holders having some good produce on display
at the Village Show this year held on the 9th
September.
On the social side of things, the allotments held their first
barbecue of the season on 1st May, being the first
barbecue we invited ‘Jackie Bush’ Chair of the Parish
Council to formally open the community area and the
flower garden around it, which was built in memory of a
very Special lady Mrs. Heather Hodges, this event was
made even more special when Heather’s husband,

children and grandchildren turned up to see the garden
and join in the event.
Although the weather decided to throw all it had at us on
the day, Allotment holders are a hardy bunch and just
laughed in the face of the passing thunder storm, the
black sky’s empting its clouds of its contents plus a little hail thrown in for good measure, we took temporary
cover in the marque and the sun parasols, and carried on
eating, drinking and chatting until the sun came out again.
A good time was had by all and I know new friendships
were made amongst like-minded people; we are looking
forward to another community barbecue this summer.
