The Revd. Roy Shaw writes.........................

If you are reading this at the beginning of June, I shall still be in Bungoma, western Kenya. But I am coming back! The twelve days will go quickly, and it will be a pleasure to be back home, after what could be quite a rainy time in Kenya. We think the UK is rainy- but equatorial rains are something else! June is to my mind the most glorious month. It’s the time when we can see the rationale for the shift in recent years to a much more ‘outside’ life; bar-b-ques, patio furniture, cafes and pubs with outdoor seating. All far less attractive in March or November, but great (usually) at this time of year. Out come the summer clothes, too. There may be a biting wind, the temperature may be only 18 degrees, but we’re determined to get the most out of shorts and t-shirts. It’s the same when my wife and I take a break just after Christmas, and head off to warmer climes. We think 18-20 degrees is

bliss; the locals are well wrapped up, thinking it’s so cold. I remember an occasion in La Orotava, Tenerife, one January, where we were in summer clothes, and passed a lady hugging a fur coat to herself. It depends on the baseline, whether we are the mad dogs and Englishmen who go out in the midday sun in t-shirt and shorts, or are well-wrapped up. We do well to remember that in all sorts of circumstances, particularly as we criticise others for their actions or lack of them; it depends on the baseline they’ve come from, and whether we and they have managed to transcend what may have been low or difficult baselines . Part of the baseline in the rural part of Kenya I visit is that things are very different from life in our ‘Golden Triangle’. But a big ‘thank you’ to those of you who gave me gifts of money to take out to Kenya in order to provide local people with Bibles in Swahili, and to provide bicycles for some of the local clergy to get around their parishes more efficiently. I hope to provide a fuller report on this in the next issue. Meanwhile, enjoy June- it’s such a precious time God Bless Your vicar,

Roy 01423 359003/ [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH

One major fund raising event in May for the church for May had still to take place after this magazine is submitted to the printers. This is the concert by Classical Reflection. It will be reported on in the July magazine.

We are now coming up to the summer months where there are all sorts of events taking place throughout our villages. It can be

difficult to choose one over the other. On Sunday 28th June all the churches in the Parish of Marston Moor will be getting together to have a Parish Picnic on The Green at Askham Richard. This will commence at 12.45pm for 1.00pm. It is a great chance for the whole family to get together, share fellowship and meet people from the other churches in the Parish. This month we have lots of joyful pictures of church life illustrating how much fun can be had in church. Gone we hope has the dour unwelcoming atmosphere of yesteryear which put so many people off coming to church. Have you been to a Family Praise service? This is usually a very informal affair with modern hymns and a music group to accompany the singing. We try and get young people to be involved the service which lasts around 45 minutes and even the most fidgety of children can cope with. There is a little bit of a flat period this month with no special events but next month we see the visit of the Elysian Singers on Saturday 11th July. This well established choir will be singing a wide range of popular music. Planning is well advanced for next month’s Summer Holiday Club to be held between Monday 20th July to Wednesday 22nd July. The theme this year is Noah’s Ark. Thank you to all who came along and helped or supported the charity stall in Parliament Street York on 23rd May. We were very lucky with the weather and were serenaded by some street entertainers for most of the time. £200 was raised for church funds.

Sunday 7th June 4pm

Tell us what you're doing... Purely by chance we heard of a recent fundraising event in the village but it wasn't included in Parish and Village News as we'd not been sent the details. If you want us to advertise your event (for free! ), please let us know in good time and we'll gladly include a mention for you.

Do you know anyone that has just moved into the village? Our aim is to make contact with them as soon as possible and tell them what we have to offer as a Church family. Our introduction is by way of delivering a Village and Parish News free of charge. Contact any member of the Church Council if you think someone may not have been seen.

From the Church of Epiphany Parish Register

Please note ALL items for the JUNE magazine need to be with the Editor by 19th June

Many of the regular items are not in the magazine this month. This is because of the sheer volume of information being sent to the Editor concerning events in the village. If you attend any of them please mention that you saw the details in the Parish and Village News. Likewise if you use the services of any of the advertisers they would like to know if it was because you have seen their advertisement in the magazine.

DONATE A BIBLE

We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms. We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might

wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one. If anyone would like to dedicate a Bible they are £15 each and we put the name inside the Bible cover. Please contact Angela Jenkins on 01423 358067.

Did you know that Tockwith

Church has a Facebook page?

It is an excellent way to keep in touch

with the local community regarding what is

happening in church. It’s a great way to

keep in touch with busy mums and dads and

remind them of events that are coming to

church.

We pop lots of photos on of various events at church - even

Elvis is on our page!!!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Give me a sense of humour, Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke,

To get some humour out of life, and pass it on to other folk

Techie trouble The vicar at our local church experienced some technical problems with the sound system one Sunday. Instead of starting the service as usual with ‘The Lord be with you’, he said: “There’s something wrong with the microphone.” Not hearing this, the congregation responded: “And also with you.” Advice to young clergy on preaching ‘Consider the postage stamp. Its usefulness consists in its ability to stick to one thing until it gets there.’ Lost in translation A certain vicar had a kindly, pastoral heart. He often wrote little notes to any parishioners in distress, assuring them of his prayers. Then came the day he heard that one of his favourite old ladies in the church had been injured in a bad fall. The vicar felt so much sympathy that he wanted to add a note of pastoral affection. He thought of the little postscript that his young niece always added to her emails to him, which he took as a sign of her affection, and decided to add that to this note. It read: “Dear Mrs Gantry, I am told that you fell down the stairs, broke both legs, and may be in hospital for some weeks. This is just to assure you that you are much in my thoughts.” Then he added the postscript: LOL.

Keep it short The minister stood up and said: “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. You’ll be glad to know that when I asked my secretary to type this sermon out for me I asked her to eliminate any thing that was dull or confusing. So in conclusion….” And finally so that Fathers ‘ Day is not forgotten 21st June Fathers Day is like Mothers Day only that you don’t spend as much.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

It doesn’t matter who my father was, it matters who I

remember he was.

Do you have information or a concern about something or someone that you think the police should know about then contact us on [email protected] alternatively call 101. For those callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the service can be accessed via text phone on 18001 101. The Parish Council has a permanent agenda item for Police Matters at every Parish Council meeting so if you have any matters to raise with the police you can also contact a Parish Councillor.

Trading Standards have been made aware of a letter being sent to local businesses entitled “Publication of Companies and Vat Registration Numbers in the UK Corporate Portal 2015” which gives a return address in Germany. The letter invites recipients to update their VAT registration details as required by changes to the EU Economic Package. The small print of this letter states by filling in their details they are agreeing to a three year advertising contract for £797 per year. There is no such requirement and this is a scam to get companies to sign up to advertising they do not

want or need. This is a scam which has been reported throughout the country and small businesses are asked to be vigilant and report any occurrences to Trading Standards on 03454 04 05 06

[National Rural Crime Survey]

Do you feel the police are visible enough?

What are your views on police response in your area?

Is crime under-reported?

How does crime and the fear of crime impact your community?

Are you concerned about threats to wildlife?

Help us protect rural areas – give us your views on policing and crime.

In response to concerns from people living and working in rural areas, the National Rural

Crime Network is launching the biggest ever survey of rural policing and crime. In the face

of shrinking budgets, it is important for us to better understand your experiences of policing

and crime in your area. Have you suffered financial loss, been concerned or worried about

safety or feel the focus is generally on urban areas?

If your answer is yes, then please complete our survey.

Our aim is to use the results of the survey to improve awareness of crime in rural areas

and encourage crime prevention, inform government policy and help ensure funding is

not disproportionately lost from rural areas. The results from the survey will inform the

police and their partners in their work, helping to ensure the right services and resources

are available to rural communities.

We can only do this with your help.

For the 10-15 minutes it will take, your response will make a difference to policing, crime

and community safety in rural areas.

Act now to make your voice heard!

Problems still exist with parents and guardians parking irresponsibly and potentially in a dangerous manner in the area around Tockwith school at the beginning and end of each school day. They are putting their children’s safety at risk by parking on the bend immediately opposite the junction to South Field Lane just for the sake of saving a couple of minutes. The police will be checking the area and where necessary quite prepared to issue Fixed Penalty Tickets. – You have been warned !!!!

TOCKWITH WITH WILSTROP PARISH COUNCIL

Parish Council meetings are, as a rule, held on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are not normally held in August or December. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings and they start at 7.30pm and are held in Tockwith Church. The minutes of previous Parish Council meetings can be found on its own web site at www.tockwith.gov.uk. The Clerk can be contacted on 01423 358009 or

email [email protected]. The Parish Council is happy to provide links to local organisations, clubs or charitable bodies so that they can share information to the wider community. Please contact [email protected] if you would like a link. It would be a good time to update your contact telephone numbers and give details of your meeting times etc. We use the web site to distribute important information about matters that effect the Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish area. Included on the website is information about the services offered by both North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate Borough Council. This includes advice regarding anti-social behaviour. The Parish Council consulted with residents within Tockwith with Wilstrop regarding the Linden Homes Development off South Field Lane. Of the questionnaires returned 83 objected and 18 were for the application. Over 200 people attended the public meeting on 13th May and of those in attendance there was overwhelming opposition to the development. At the meeting on 20th May the Parish Council unanimously voted to object to the planning application as submitted. A copy of the letter which has been sent to Harrogate Planning Department listing reasons on planning grounds is displayed on the Parish Council website. The Parish Council have appointed a new Clerk. She is Dawn Dyason and her contact telephone number is 01423 358009. Please be patient as she familiarises herself with systems and processes. Two new Parish Councillors have been co-opted on to the Council. They are Miranda Thew who will fill the Cowthorpe vacancy and Dominic Snook who will fill the Wilstrop Vacancy. This is the first time that the Parish Council has had a full quota of councillors since the 2012 Parish Council elections. At its Annual General Meeting Councillors re-elected Norman Waller as Chairman and elected Keith Pope as Vice Chairman.

Summary of Chairman’s Report to the AGM 2014-2015

The Parish Council plays a vital role in representing the interests of the community and to improving its quality of life and the local environment. Parish Councilors are volunteers that care about the community in which they live and the only paid person representing the Parish Council is the Parish Clerk. Many of the Councillors are also associated with other village organizations, such as the Village Hall Sports Field, Tockwith School, Tockwith Show and Tockwith Players etc.

For several years we have reported on the Parish Council’s frustrations with Harrogate Borough Councils failure to deal with planning issues on the old Tockwith Airfield. With a sense of ‘déjà vu’ we report that another year has gone by with very little progress. The bus depot has left the old airfield only to be replaced by a 24 hour transport company. Without any control over their hours of operation the Parish Council continue to urge Harrogate Borough Council to take enforcement action. Yet again we have been asked by them to evidence build and provide them with details of the disturbance the operation is causing. We only hope that they make better use of the information provided to them than that given to them regarding the noise and other activities on the old airfield. The Parish Council urges residents to continue to address their complaints regarding noise to Harrogate Borough Council Environmental Health Department.

No tyres have been removed from the airfield since the last report and we estimate that more than 30,000 remain. We hope that agreement can be reached between the Environment Agency and the site operator regarding their use as a safety barrier very soon with the residue removed as soon as possible. Again if no agreement is reached we expect the appropriate enforcement action to be taken.

Last year the Parish Council predicted that there was a risk of a planning ‘free for all’ in the district as a result of the Government Planning Inspector rejection of the Harrogate District Local Development Plan. Two areas of land in Tockwith have been considered by developers which could see around 200 new houses being built. As this report is being written one developer has submitted detailed plans but the Parish Council has still to respond to the consultation.

The Parish Council accepts that as a village we need to help with the chronic housing shortage in the area and in particular the need for low cost affordable housing to keep our young people living in the area in which they were brought up. Some added housing could help us to keep our Post Office, shop, public houses and doctor’s surgery and also benefit the various village organizations by increasing their membership.

It is a concern of the Parish Council that as a rural community we seem to bear the brunt of any cut backs. We are disappointed that the local bus service between York and Wetherby has been reduced by 50% in the last year so that it is now a two hourly service. This may not be the last cut in services as NYCC seek to reduce bus service subsidies even further. The

Tuesday Youth Club has abruptly ended with no indication whether it will start up again. The cutting of highway verges has also been substantially curtailed.

At the end of last year we said goodbye to our Clerk Helen Algar and appointed Claire Porter at the beginning of this year but regrettably due to a change in personal circumstances she has tendered her resignation and leaves us on 31st May.

Cowthopre Councillor Izzy Hatfield moved away from the area and stood down. She has been replaced by Andy Dyason.

After Planning the thing which ruffles the feathers of residents most is the state of the local roads. Despite the talk of new money being provided by central government there has been no obvious improvement to the condition of our local roads. Pot holes remain unrepaired for long periods of time. Road signs and road markings which were missing over twelve months ago are still missing despite protestations by the Parish Council.

When Connexions Buses were granted permission to operate out of premises off South Field Lane the Parish Council were disappointed to learn that this permission was granted before waiting for a response from North Yorkshire Highways. The large buses have eroded the grass vergers and virtually destroyed the vehicle passing places yet the Highways seem unconcerned about its current state of affairs. The improvement of this road is essential if any building takes place off South Field lane.

In the last year the Parish Council have created a new more ‘user friendly’ web site which we hope gives more information about the activities of the Parish Council. You can see old minutes and find various polices. We have also provided links to other local organisations like the Village Hall, Tockwith Show, Tockwith Church and the village school. I recommend that you check it out. www.tockwith.gov.uk.

The Parish Council have co-ordinated the building of a memorial to those killed when a Stirling Bomber crashed in the Main Street of the Village on 9th October 1945. We would hope that the whole village will support the Exhibition to be held in church on Saturday 10th October followed by a Memorial Service and march up the main street of the village and unveiling of the memorial on Sunday 11th October.

As each year passes more and more people are being asked to volunteer to serve their community whether it be to help the police, libraries, play schemes etc. The Parish Council is very pleased to have helped in the setting up of Community First Responders in Cowthorpe and Tockwith with the assistance of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The first set of volunteers have been trained and they are expected to be fully operational very soon. A big thank you to all the volunteers for giving up their time for the benefit of others.

The Village Hall is owned by the Parish Council and is administered by the Village Hall Management Committee who are representatives from each of the groups or clubs that regularly use the facilities. The Parish Council would like to thank each and every one of the volunteers for their support and efforts in maintaining this important focal point within the village community.

Being a Parish Councillor is more than turning up for one meeting a month – it is a commitment to work for the good of the Parish and that involves external meetings, coordination, leading, networking and at the end of the day getting the job done.

The Parish Council operates on a budget of around £25,000 a year, out of that we have to pay a Clerk, maintain all the Parish Councils assets like the Village Hall, public open spaces, play areas at Tockwith and Cowthopre and award grants to various organisations. We need to be prudent with our spending and carefully consider the best value of everything we do.

I am grateful for the support and expert guidance of fellow councillors, who give their time willingly and freely, to help with the development of community projects in order to improve elements of the Parish.

Lastly, a big thank you to all the organizations and individuals who make village life more enjoyable and community orientated and ask everyone to remember that the people who make things happen are all volunteers and need your continued support. Please feel free to attend any of our council meetings. nrw

Please note brown cardboard will no longer be collected by the door step collection team. It can be disposed of via your black bins. If brown cardboard is found in your paper waste it could mean all of your paper is not taken. Additionally whilst the Thorp Arch recycling centre is strictly for the use of residents who pay their community charge to Leeds City Council they are prepared to continue the dispensation for Tockwith and Cowthorpe residents who can take their rubbish there.

Shame on you ! At the public meeting concerning the development of land off South Field Lane many people spoke passionately about the countryside and respecting it and preserving it for future generations. Dotted around the village particularly in Ness Lane there are signs of a strange phenomenon as illustrated. Similar objects appear in trees and bushes and no one seems to have witnessed how they get there.

Harrogate Borough Council Dog Warden Service is on the case. If you are found to be responsible then you are unlikely to be given an ‘on the spot fine’ but reported for summons to appear in court which could mean a £1,000 fine. If you can identify any offenders and witnessed such disgusting littering then telephone 01423 500600.

A NOTICE RE: BAPTISMS

Baptisms take place within our normal services – usually a service which will be a Holy Communion plus Baptism. This is because Baptism signifies a welcome into the church, and the beginning of a Christian journey. It only makes sense therefore, if this sacrament takes place within the worshipping community, who along with the family, welcome the child into God’s great family.

Baptism can only take place when a priest is present at a service, and if you are thinking of having your child baptized, you need to give a long ‘lead time’ to the clergy. It may not be possible for a priest to be available on the Sunday you have in mind, and you may need to be flexible over the date, although every effort will be made to meet your wishes. In the first instance, please contact one of the Wardens to arrange a date. Please note: Allocated Baptism dates for 2015 - 12th July and 13th September

Tockwith Community First Responders Tockwith’s first batch of six community first responders have been trained and have started their official duties. Whilst none of us want to see them it is comforting to know that this group of people are willing to reserve some of their spare time for the benefit of the community. There are other people waiting in the wings to be trained. When all of those people are trained we will have more Community First Responders than the town of Thirsk.

Back row: Richard Ebdon, Jeremy Gill, YAS trainer Tom Render, Nick Folkard. Front Row: Lois Folkard, Sarah Gill and Fiona Steed.

The rota and training is co-ordinated by Lorraine Gill. If you think you would like to be a CFR Volunteer then please contact Lorraine on 01423 358401. Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) plays a vital role in the NHS’s commitment to looking after the health of the nation. YAS is committed to providing the highest standard of pre-hospital patient care to all those living in or passing through its boundaries. It is not always possible, however, to get an emergency vehicle to a patient with a potentially life-threatening condition within the first few vital minutes, particularly if they are situated in an outlying rural area. Thank you to the Village Hall Committee for allowing the Village Hall to be used for training of the Community First Responders free of charge.

THE VILLAGE MEMORIAL Commissioned by the Parish Council

A visual of how the monument will look when completed

The next stage of planning for the Memorial Service and unveiling of the memorial to mark the 70th anniversary of the Sterling Bomber crashing in Marston Road Tockwith is under way.

The service of commemoration will be in Tockwith Church on Sunday 11th October at 2.00pm. There will be more information on this as plans go forward.

The next step is to get permission to remove the dead tree which occupies where the memorial is to be sited. Because the section of land is a conservation area it cannot be removed without confirmation by the Harrogate Borough tree specialist that the tree is dead.

We then have to receive approval from the Planning Department of the materials to be used.

After doing all this we need to obtain a license from the North Yorkshire Highways to place the memorial on land they are technically are responsible for.

Material is being collected for the exhibition on 10th October but there can never be enough information. Norman Waller would like to hear from anyone who has memories of the crash or any photographs or newspaper cuttings which could be incorporated into the exhibition. Contact 01423 358588 or email him [email protected].

Children from Tockwith School are also going to display poems about the crash.

Home composting – buy a compost bin from £12

How to purchase a compost bin

The York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership are part of the national framework to supply York and North Yorkshire residents with low cost compost bins. The partnership is currently offering residents two sizes of compost bin at the following subsidised prices:

The 220 litre compost bin costs £12.00 plus delivery. The 330 litre compost bin costs £14.00 plus delivery.

There is also a buy one get one half price offer on the already discounted prices which means residents of York and North Yorkshire can team up with a family member, friend or neighbour to get a compost bin for as little as £9 each. Delivery price is £5.99 per order. For more information and to purchase a compost bin please visit www.getcomposting.com

Compost bins from a garden centre can cost around £40 so you will save money by buying through this scheme.

Both the 220 litre and 330 litre compost bins are called Compost Converters. They are made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, have a windproof secure push-fit lid and removable side hatch, are carbon footprint certified by the Carbon Trust and are guaranteed for 15 years.

There are other methods of composting, see the Alternative composting systems page for more information. Products such as caddies, wormeries, hot bins and kitchen composters can also be purchased at www.getcomposting.com or other retailers.

Thunderboots are go to Benidorm Tockwith Boot and Shoe was quiet for a little while in May as they provided two teams in the annual Benidorm or bust car rally. There were several teams from around the country Two teams calling themselves Thunderboots Two and Four made the 1,500 mile trip from Blackpool to Benidorm as part of their bid to raise £5,000 for Martin House Children’s Hospice. Two cars had been converted, one a Reliant Robin made to look like one of the vehicles from the famous Thunder Birds series. Starting off in typically wet Lancashire weather on the 5th May they arrived in sun soaked Benidorm on 8th May.

Donations are still being accepted and can be made to the just giving site at https:/www.justgiving.com/thunderboots/ Over £1,000 has been donated so far

Perfect Lemonade Recipe Prep time: 10 minutes Yield: Serves 6.

For more intense lemon flavor, grate the zest from one fresh lemon and add the zest to the simple syrup as you are making it. Once the sugar has dissolved in the water remove from heat and let the zest seep in the simple syrup for several minutes, then strain out the zest when you add the simple syrup to the lemon juice.

Ingredients

1 cup white, granulated sugar (can reduce to 3/4 cup) 1 cup water (for the simple syrup) 1 cup lemon juice 2 to 3 cups cold water (to dilute)

Method

1 First make a "simple syrup". Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Stir so that the sugar dissolves completely and remove from heat.

2 While the water is heating for the simple syrup, juice your lemons. Depending on the size of the lemons, 4 to 6 of them should be enough for one cup of juice.

3 Pour the juice and the simple syrup sugar water into a serving pitcher. Add 2 to 3 cups of cold water and taste. Add more water if you would like it to be more diluted (though note that when you add ice, it will melt and naturally dilute the lemonade). If the lemonade is a little sweet for your taste, add a little more straight lemon juice to it.

Refrigerate 30 to 40 minutes.

Serve with ice, sliced lemons.

TJFC Awards Day

Saturday 9th May saw the annual end of season Awards Day for Tockwith Juniors FC. The day began with a Sponsored Run in aid of the Sportsfield Trust and its continuing work to improve what is already an excellent facility. Almost 100 junior footballers turned out to run a tough circuit, cheered on by relatives and friends. Everyone completed the task in good time and it is estimated to have raised over £1000. Special mention must go to Deryck Wilson who put the adults to shame by completing 27 laps of the main football pitch (over 5 miles) in one hour.

The awards ceremony then took place in the school hall. Thanks to Mr Reeve and Mr Wardle. Medals were given to all the mini soccer players and proceedings culminated in the presentation by Bradford City

manager, Phil Parkinson, of 33 trophies for Players of the Year and Coaches Awards in each age group. A note of thanks to Diane Hullock and her hard working Clubhouse Team for keeping

everyone fed and watered during the afternoon. The day was topped off with a football match between two teams of coaches, managers and parents. It was a close and hard fought contest with all the skills and talent one would expect on display. Parkinson commented “I won’t be troubling my chairman’s cheque book today”. Well done all. Thanks for making another highly successful day in our community.

Do you enjoy painting or drawing? Perhaps you like the idea, but have never got round to trying it. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced you will be most welcome at TOCKWITH ART GROUP.

We are a small diverse group with a common interest in producing pictures. Some paint in oils, watercolours or acrylics, others prefer pastels or collage. Whatever your preferred medium, you are sure to fit in.

On Monday 29th June, visitors are very welcome to join us at a demonstration by John Harrison.

John is Yorkshire born and bred and the landscape of the East Coast is the inspiration for much of his recent work.

He will be using pen and watercolour wash in his demo at 7.30pm at Tockwith Village Hall

Big Guns in Tockwith

Tockwith Sportsfield played host to the annual Army football tournament semi-finals in May. The 5th Regiment Royal Artillery and Royal Army Medical Corp football clubs decamped from Catterick Garrison to the playing fields of Tockwith. A nail-biting match ended tied at 3-3 after extra time and the Royal Artillery won out 6-5 on penalties to progress to the final in Ripon. RA coach and manager, Gareth Evans, thanked the Sportsfield Trust for “the use of the best pitch in Yorkshire (and probably beyond)”. Look out for more matches in then future.

TOKYO TRIBE (Certificate 18)

Released 22 May 2015

Now here’s a genre-bending movie for you. Tokyo Tribe is an all-singing, all-dancing Yakuza street gangs action film derived from its manga comic book origins. West Side Story- Japanese Style it certainly isn’t. More A Clockwork Orange complete with snatches of Beethoven as the tribes ferociously battle-rap their way across a futuristic Tokyo made up of ghettoes and nightclubs. Whilst the film is likely to be shunned by the squeamish, it does have some redeeming features. Notably there is Erika (Seino Nana) the daughter of a priest who remains a shadowy figure throughout the movie. We know enough about him and his dubious sacrificial practices to realise he’s up to no good. Which is probably the chief reason that his followers include the vicious gang-leader Lord Buppa (Takeuchi Riki) and henchman Merra, played by the physically imposing Ryohei Suzuki. The way religion endorses (or at least lends itself to) violent behaviour is a prevailing motif of the film. Erika, in pursuit of a better way of living, goes on the run (under the nom-de-plum Sunmi) from her blood-thirsty father. She falls into the hands of Buppa’s thugs who delight in sex and violence as well as rap music. Fortunately, in true comic book style, there’s a hero Kai. And he sings even better songs. That’s because the actor Young Dais is in real life one of Japan’s most popular singers. Kai also heads up the Musashino-Saru tribe, one dedicated to peace and love. Herein lies the judgement: light has come into the world but men prefer darkness. Erika/Sunmi acts in effect as 1 Corinthian 13’s Hymn to Love. Her muscular spirituality in tandem with the combat skills of Kai provide the necessary confrontation with evil that the narrative demands. The director Sion Sono has over many years compiled a distinctive frenetic and rebellious output. Here, with obligatory fast cutting and hand-held camera shots, it looks a tired old medium. The music is about the only factor different from many other run of the mill gangsta-type pictures. And though an element of forgive us our trespasses supersedes the carnage of turf wars, it remains a film strictly for cult followers of ultra-violent scenarios. © Stephen J. Brown

MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB

At their meeting on Tuesday 28th April 2015

Mr Keith Edgar introduced Mr Rex Stott to

give his talk “Magic, Myth and Mystery”. Mr

Stott began his career as a magician when he

was about 8 years old when his mother gave

him 3d to buy something at the “magic shop”.

What he bought was a matchbox which could

open to show matches or open to see they had

disappeared. Mr Stott demonstrated this

with a similar one and went on to trace his

widening repertoire of tricks as he and his brother entertained church and

sport groups. This activity came to a stop when he went to University and

was only resumed 35 years later. Mr Stott told of his early life in the West

Riding and of going to see Leeds United with his father and he still goes, most

recently with his son, grandson and great grandson. He was a keen cricketer

and still follows the game. Mr Stott illustrated his talk with many examples

of illusions and sometimes explained how they worked. Following some

questions Mr Stott was thanked for his entertaining talk.

The forms for making a choice in the menu for the Summer Outing (28th July

2015) and for confirming a place were available together with the full

programme for the day.

The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in

guests are welcome. Contact the Secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358393.

DIOCESE

A Bishop who once played hockey for England Schoolboys has been commissioned by the Archbishop of York to take on a new national sporting role in the Church of England. Bishop Tony Porter, from the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, has become the Archbishops’ Sport Ambassador, working to strengthen links between the Church and sport at all levels. “My main work will be to encourage parish churches to be involved in the world of sport and for the world of sport to receive Christian ministry in a culture and language they understand,” said Bishop Tony, who won an Oxford Blue as well as playing for England Schoolboys. “I want the Church to be available pastorally and to take appropriate opportunities to share the good news of Jesus.”

The Archbishop, Dr John Sentamu, said: “It is no accident that St Paul uses the metaphor of running a race to describe the Christian life, where discipline and the support of others help us to see God doing more than we ever thought possible. I am delighted that Bishop Tony will be working to highlight that link between faith and sport some 2000 years after St Paul!”

Thought for Tomorrow Personal reflections by Henry Woods

With the general election over we can hope that the newly-elected Members of Parliament are reminded of the close linkage between the Church and the democratic form of our political life and our government. The shape of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons are what they are because they were once chapels. The distance between the two front benches which is two sword lengths allows for fierce and robust debate without recourse to physical violence. This has no religious connection. But the daily prayers offered by the Speaker’s Chaplain precede the daily business of the House, and remind our rulers that there is a higher power even than an MP. The parliamentary scrutiny of Church affairs is less detailed than it used to be and the Church has more untrammelled control over its own affairs than it used to. In fact the Church is not far off being disestablished in practical terms except for the role of the Sovereign in the approval of Bishops’ appointment. It is sad that we do not often pray for the Head of the Church thus recognising her role in mitigating the patronage of senior appointments in political terms. At least we know that The Queen is truly impartial. So in the aftermath of the election let us hope that the Archbishops and Bishops will set an example and encourage Congregations committed to their charge to pray for the Head of the Church regularly rather than now and again. If we all do this the Church will benefit and be strengthened in its mission. If we do not a whole generation will be unaware that we have a Head of the Church. I do hope that this will be done

hand and chocolate not too far away, ahhh... what more could

one hope for - well perhaps some sun? I forgot to mention

the big black clouds overhead and their contents

complimenting the bubbling water! But then, after the rain, it came - the sun and

a beautiful rainbow.

We all hope for things don’t we. Some of our hopes compliment an already

exciting event, like the hope of the sun coming out just added to my already

wonderful evening. However others are based on life affecting circumstances

and when crushed, impact on us greatly.

In the Bible the word “hope” is translated from the Greek word conveying

absolute certainty, and this gives us a different slant on things. Hebrews: 8:19

tells us that the Christian hope acts like an anchor. An anchor, which we can

picture in our minds as a sturdy metal object, attached to a great heavy chain,

holding a boat firm and secure as it weathers a storm. Keeping an image like that

in our minds when our earthly hopes are being battered can be a great help.

Christians tell the story of Jesus year by year, day by day, over and over

because holding onto that story is like making sure that we are firmly attached

to the anchors cable. Perhaps as you read this you are facing the disappointment

of dashed hopes, or the excitement of those fulfilled; such are our earthly

hopes. However, whatever our earthly hopes are remember there is a greater

hope; and if you by any chance find yourself this summer sitting in a hot tub, I

hope the weather is good, but if it rains, don’t forget the sun is always there

above the clouds.

Just a thought...

Every blessing

Gail
