Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for adults who wish to become Catholics. They meet weekly with the RCIA team for several months to receive the sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. The low-key and confidential meetings are where we share our spirituality as well as discuss the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have been baptized and have received First Communion, but not Confirmation are welcome to join if they wish to be con-firmed in a diocesan ceremony in February. We also welcome adult Catholics who simply want to learn more about their faith. Also cordially invited are fully-initiated Catholics who are moved to simply share their faith as team members. Experience and training are not requirements. Our first meeting this year will be on Sunday, October 12 at 9:45a.m. in the St. Joseph room in the Hall directly after the 9:00a.m. Mass. Interested parties, including RCIA team volunteers, may call Marty Mijalski, 510-582-3511.

Today, at 9:00 Mass, we commission our catechists, the wonderful men and women who have answered Christ’s call to share their faith with the next generation. LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#49. Let us go forth, then, let us go forth to offer everyone the life of Jesus Christ. Here I repeat for the entire Church what I have often said to the priests and laity of Buenos Aires: I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church con-cerned with being at the centre and which then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures. If something should rightly disturb us and trouble our con-sciences, it is the fact that so many of our brothers and sisters are living without the strength, light and consola-tion born of friendship with Jesus Christ, without a com-munity of faith to support them, without meaning and a goal in life. More than by fear of going astray, my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us: “Give them something to eat” (Mk 6:37). Fr. Terry’s Remarks— The words of Pope Francis today gives us our blueprint for the kind of Church we truly should be. The Church of Jesus should be out in the streets bruised, dirty and hurting. That's what Jesus did, that's where the people of God are. Today in Rome, the Synod of Bishops meet and their main bone of contention will be: should we pay more attention to 'obsessions and procedures' words of Pope Francis, when so many of our wounded brothers and sisters are denied the light, strength and consolation that comes from closeness to Jesus in their community of faith, their Church? We have become harsh judges, we are living lives behind struc-tures that give some of us false security while our wound-ed brothers and sisters are being denied the nurture and holy medicine they desperately need and in many cases desire. So many of us are so worried about making a mis-take or going astray that we are overcompensating and in danger of missing the Good News of the Gospel in our own lives while denying it to those in greatest need by creating too many obstacles. We recall when Jesus sent his disciples out, he warned them about carrying unneces-sary baggage. Now you need a Doctorate to explain our Laws, another to understand our Sacraments and still another to read Scripture. No wonder so many of our peo-ple are in travail. Over the next ten days, let us pray ear-nestly and act Christlike so that the Synod meeting in Rome listens to the Holy Spirit and the cries of our people.
