Our church has rules for fasting, (ie: to eat less) during the forty days of Lent.

• Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain form meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every Friday of Lent

• Every person between the ages of 18 and 59 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting consists of one full meal per day, with two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal and no snacks.

Why do we do this? This practice is to make

room for God in our lives. Everyone wants to be close to God, to know God, to serve God. Such thoughts are what we call “good intentions”. Do you know what people say about such intentions: “the road to Hell is paved with good intentions”. And that’s the truth. We begin well with ‘good intentions’, but we end with failed deeds. Fasting is one way to put some teeth into the ‘good intentions’. Go without something you enjoy, food or drink; upset your routine. Remember, we humans are creatures of habit; we want our own cup, our own chair, our own clutter in our room. Give up something, add some time to pray, to exercise, to visit the sick. See what God does with you when you make some room in your daily life. Here is what Rev. David Lose says: “Just may-be I need a time (is 40 days really enough?) to help clear my head of the distractions which any involved life in this world will necessarily bring and reorient myself towards the Maker of all that was given for my pleasure and which I have let become merely dis-tracting. Msgr. Frank Kelley

Second Sunday in Lent Luke’s account of the Transfiguration is rich

with meaning. Peter recognizes this special moment with Jesus: “Master, it is god that we are here.” We don’t have to go up the mountain to be with Jesus. We can say those very words of Peter every day when we are untied with Jesus through sacraments and dai-ly prayer. Listen to what God says, not just to the Apostles, that were on that mountain, but to each of us: “This is my chosen Son, listen to Him.” Pry in a special way this Lent to hear Jesus’ voice and pray particularly for the courage to share your faith with others.

How to make a gift to our Campaign We ask you to decide to contribute Online with WE SHARE. Holy Name Parish, West Roxbury / Roslindale, will host a 3-part book discussion of Martin Pable’s Remaining Catholic: Six Reasons For Staying in an Im-

perfect Church (2014 edition), on 3 Wednesdays —

March 20, April 3, April 10 — with interchangeable attendance possible, at 9-10 am (lower-church gather-ing space, 1689 Centre St.) or 7:30-8:30 pm (convent, 525 West Roxbury Pkwy., side entrance). Sacred Heart Roslindale Celebrates 125 Years The New Pastor: Francis J. Lally. . . The fifth pastor of Sacred Heart was a distin-guished clergyman with a highly respected rec-ord of public service. Monsignor Francis Lally, who preferred to be called Father Lally, was editor of The Pilot from 1952 to 1972. He was the widely admired writer of sparkling, courageous and liberal editorials. Under his leadership The Pilot was a consistent win-ner in Catholic Press Association competition.

He was also deeply involved in Boston’s urban renewal efforts, serving for almost 10 years as chairman of the Boston Redevel-opment Authority. When Lally resigned from the BRA in 1970, The Boston Globe noted, "His rule in every case has been to ignore special interest and selfish considerations and to insist that what must always be served is the greatest number. The bricks and the mortar are not his main concern. People are his concern, people and their needs."

With his focus on people, Father Lally took his pastoral duties as seriously as his public ones. Parish Council Records show that he missed only one meeting during his tenure at Sacred, despite all his other commitments. Concerned about decreasing Mass attendance, he arranged to have Mass said at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Roslindale Square to make participa-tion more convenient for the west side of the parish.

Lally’s talents were also called into service during the desegre-gation era of the seventies. He was deeply committed to racial justice and served as the first chaplain of the Catholic Interracial Council of Boston, a member of the board of directors of the Urban League, vice chairman of Action for Boston Community Development, and a member of the Religion and Race Commis-sion.

Father Lally served as pastor of Sacred Heart for only three years and four months, from October 1971 to February, 1975. In 1975 he went to Washington to become secretary of the De-partment of Social Development and World Peace of the US Catholic Conference, the service and program agency of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
