WELCOME:Newcomers,VisitorsandParishioners The priests, deacons & ministries of Church of the As-sumption welcome you. If you would like more infor-mation about entering more fully into our parish life & ministry, we ask that you complete the form below & give it to an usher, or send it into the Rectory. Thank You! I would like…. ____ to become a Parishioner ____ to change my address ____ to receive envelopes ____ to let the Parish know of someone who is ill, or homebound & would like to receive Communion Name: ___________________________ Address: ___________________________ Phone: ____________________________

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Y esterday some of our second graders celebrated for the first time the Sacrament of Reconciliation: their First Penance! Others will do the same next Saturday. We pray for all of them as they continue in their formation toward their First Holy Communion, which they will receive in a few months. We pray also for all students preparing for Confirmation, in the hope that they may continue living their faith throughout their life. At a time in which our society is not anymore fundamen-tally Christian, but rather pluralistic and in many way posing obstacles to the spreading of the Gospel, Christian formation is becoming ever more necessary at any age if we want to avoid that separation between faith and life that Cardinal Tobin re-ferred to during his Mass of Installation, as I quoted in this very column last week. In fact, the Catechism of the Catholic Church urges all par ishes to introduce a post-baptismal ini-tiation into the faith – a “catechumenate” to be lived after bap-tism (cf. paragraph 1231) – through which the graces received at our baptism may grow and bear fruit. On January 30th our parish will offer again freely – no cost, no obligation, no commitment – a series of Catechesis for Adults and Youth ... and some of our par ishioners are “getting nervous” again because of the connection of the Cat-echesis to the Neocatechumenal Way. Yet, the Neocatechume-nal Way is but a post-baptismal initiation into the faith that we are trying to introduce in the parish in response to the urging of the Church, which indeed allows us to be “missionaries” for the present generation. Speaking to members of the Neocatechumenal Way on March 6th, 2015, Pope Francis descr ibed their mission as the one of “showing signs of faith that draw men and women to the beauty of the Gospel,” – signs of “love” and “unity” according to the message of Christ – with a mandate to evangelize non-Christians “who have never heard of Jesus Christ, and so many non-Christians who have forgotten who Jesus Christ was, who Jesus Christ is; non-Christians who were baptized, but seculari-zation, worldliness and many other causes have made them forget the faith.” Stressing the need, once again, “for the Church to move from a pastoral ministry of mere conservation to a decidedly missionary pastoral ministry,” the Holy Father quoted words that St. John Paul II wrote in 1990 when he officially approved the Neocatechumenal Way recognizing it as “an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.” Blessed Paul VI, back in 1974, had acclaimed the Neocate-chumenal Way as a fruit of the Second Vatican Council: “How much joy and how much hope you give us by your pres-ence and your activity!” he said to the Neocatechumenal Com-munities present at his General Audience. I ask you to pray for the success of the Catechesis and to spread the word that the possibility to hear good news is once again being offered here at Assumption. There is nothing to fear when we announce the Gospel in communion with the whole Church!

With my blessing, Fr. Paolo
