“Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.”
In today’s Gospel of John, Jesus states clearly that He came so that his followers might have abundant Life. Jesus uses the metaphor of a caring shepherd and sheep to indicate how his followers might receive that Life: by hearing his voice and their name, by following the Good Shepherd, by recognizing whose voice calls them. Hearing, following, recognizing: we are to open our ears in faith, open our hearts in trust, open our minds in love. This is the way to abundant Life. The Gate is wide open. Will we enter?
Today is also traditionally referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday. Hearing the Shepherd’s voice, followers recognize and know it is their God. Safe in the knowledge that they cannot be taken from the hand of the Shepherd, those who hear his voice follow as faithful believers willing to go where God calls and sends them. On this day, the 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Francis reflected on the missionary dimension of our Christian calling in his message titled “Led by the Spirit for Mission”:
“Brothers and sisters, today too, we can regain fervor in preaching the Gospel and we can encourage young people in particular to take up the path of Christian discipleship. Despite a widespread sense that the faith is listless or reduced to mere “duties to discharge”, our young people desire to discover the perennial attraction of Jesus, to be challenged by his words and actions, and to cherish the ideal that he holds out of a life that is fully human, happy to spend itself in love.
Mary Most Holy, the Mother of our Savior, had the courage to embrace this ideal, placing her youth and her enthusiasm in God’s hands. Through her intercession, may we be granted that same openness of heart, that same readiness to respond, “Here I am”, to the Lord’s call, and that same joy in setting out (cf. Lk 1:39), like her, to proclaim him to the whole world.”
So, let us too, pray for Evangelization and Vocations. And let us also pray for the men from our Archdiocese who will be ordained later this month on Saturday, May 27th, at our beautiful Cathedral Basilica of Sacred Heart in Newark, as well as those who will be ordained to the Diaconate.
Yesterday, Saturday, May 6th, seventeen of our second-grade children received the Eucharist for the first time. Please keep them in your prayers that the presence of Jesus within them will nourish and sustain them in all that they encounter each day of their life.
Have a wonderful and safe week. God Bless You! Fr. Jacek
Our 2017 First Eucharist Children
Please keep all our children in your prayers who received their First Eucharist on Saturday, May 6th. These children have been preparing for many months for this special day.
Thank you to the parents, teachers, and parish volunteers who mentored them to this day.
Let us pray that this time for the children may truly be a spiritually enriching moment in their lives as they receive the Body of Christ for the first of many times.

FAITH FORMATION
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Sunday, May 7th
World Day of Prayer is observed on Sunday, May 7th, also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday." It marks the 54th Anniv. of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers
into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find many resources on vocations on www.usccb.org/vocations.
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests,
deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond
generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations
of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
CROWNING OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER
Sunday, May 14th, 10:30am Mass
OO’ Mary!
We crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May
Join us with our First Eucharist children on Sunday, May14th, Mother’s Day, at the 10:30am Mass to Crown our Blessed Mother. May is a special time of prayer to our Blessed Mother and what better day to show our affection and devotion to Jesus’ Mother on this day when we celebrate and give thanks to all our Mothers!
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Saturday, May 13th
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal, where the Blessed Mother appeared once each month from May 13 until Oct. 13, 1917. Fatima is one of the most significant of all Marian apparitions. Along with Guadalupe (Dec. 12) and Lourdes (Feb. 11), it is one of three Marian apparitions honored with a feast day. In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II added the May 13 feast of Our Lady of Fatima to the general Roman calendar. May 13 was the day of the first Fatima apparition of 1917, and May 13, 1981, was the day when St. John Paul II survived an attempt on his life in St. Peter’s Square. John Paul II credited his survival to the intervention of Our Lady of Fatima. The assassin’s bullet that narrowly missed killing the Pope now is inserted in a crown of Our Lady housed at the Fatima shrine. Fatima is also linked with the collapse of Russian communism more than 25 years ago.
It is estimated that 4-5 million people visit Fatima each year, and more are expected this year, including a visit by Pope Francis, who plans to travel to Portugal on May 12-13 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. Two of the visionaries of the Marian apparitions of Fatima, shepherds Jacinta and Francisco Marto, will be canonized by Pope Francis when he visits the Portuguese shrine in May. On Feb.13, 2017, the 12th anniversary Sr. Lúcia Santos death, her canonization process moved forward. The first part of her canonization cause began in 2008 due to the dispensation granted by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis spoke about Fatima during his general audience on May 11th, 2016: “She asks us to never offend God again. She forewarns all humanity about the necessity of abandoning oneself to God, the source of love and mercy.” “Following the example of St. John Paul II, a great devotee of Our Lady of Fatima, let us listen attentively to the Mother of God and ask for peace for the world.”
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!
PARISH & COMMUITY
OUR LADY OF KNOCK SPECIAL MASS SATURDAY, MAY 13th!
The Archdiocese of New York has advised us that Cardinal Timothy Dolan will celebrate a Requiem Mass for John Curry, one of the witnesses to the Marian apparition at Knock in 1879. The Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 13th, at 11am at the Basilica of Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral. Following the Mass,
Curry, who had originally been buried in a communal grave, will be reinterred in a new grave in Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral Cemetery. Joining Cardinal Dolan will be the Very Reverend Richard Gibbons, Rector of the Shrine of Knock in Ireland, along with a group of Irish pilgrims. The Mass will be open to the public.
DELICIOUS HOMEMADE DESSERTS -
BAKE SALE FOR MOTHER’S DAY ON SUNDAY, MAY 14th!
The Polish Club will be sponsoring a Bake Sale after all the Masses on Mother’s Day, next Sunday, May 14th. Rather than buying a store made dessert save yourself some time and enjoy an assortment of homemade goodies while supporting the Polish Club of our Parish!
SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF
GRIEVING PARENTS
The 30th Annual Liturgy for Those Whose Children Have Died will be held on Friday, May 12th at 7:30pm at Notre Dame RC Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ. All parents who have suffered the death of a child of any age are invited to attend with their families and friends. A personal witness will also be offered as the name of each child is read during the Mass. Pre-registration is requested by contacting Lauren Egan at 973-497-4327 or [email protected].
SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS ANNUAL APPEAL AIDS SEMINARIANS!
On May 27th, seven men will be ordained as priests at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. Five of the men are resident seminarians of Immaculate Conception Seminary; another a resident seminarian of Redemptoris Mater; and one studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Rev. Mr. Philip Micele said, “I am deeply grateful for all the support, both financial and spiritual, which the people of the Archdiocese of Newark have provided us. Their contributions enable us to have access to excellent professors and formaters who help us to grow as men of prayer, and come to know and love the Lord and his church more deeply. During my years as a seminarian, I can say I've experienced a lot of personal growth, and so much of that is due to the generosity of the people of the Archdiocese of Newark.”
Although each new priest took a different journey in responding to God’s call, all of them share a deep humility at being called to the priesthood and the common desire to do the will of God and serve His Church. Thank you for your support of the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal which provides funding to our seminaries.
THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK
WELCOMED 499 CATECHUMENS AND 693 CANDIDATES AT THE EASTER VIGIL
Catechumens receive the sacraments of initiation - baptism, confirmation and first Communion - during the Easter Vigil, having prepared for this moment through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Candidates, who are already baptized, also go through the preparation program to receive confirmation and first Communion to enter full communion with the church.
The Parish Renewal Fund, established by the We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign,
will enable parishes to apply for grants to enhance their evangelization efforts as well as Religious Ed. programs. This will
allow the Church of Newark to continue to spread the Gospel and proclaim Jesus Christ as our Risen Savior.
