Message from the Pastor:
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!
What we are celebrating with this Solemnity is not a style of government - earthly kings and kingdoms - but the victory of Christ over all things - even death. Christ the King makes possible among us a reign of goodness, mercy, forgiveness, justice, reconciliation, and peace!
The Crucifixion scene in today’s Gospel of Luke offers the irony of Christ being taunted but also
being recognized as going to Paradise, the Kingdom of the Father. “If you are King of the Jews, save yourself” the soldiers jeered at Jesus on the cross. But they misunderstood what “save yourself” means. The rulers, soldiers, and one criminal thought being saved meant that Jesus should come down from the cross, avoid any more suffering and certainly avoid death. Salvation is less a matter of being “saved from” than a matter of being “saved for”. Jesus shows us through his words to the other criminal what being “saved” really means: “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Arch. Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, KY, President of the USCCB, issued the following statement and prayer after the election of our new President-Elect: “Every election brings a new beginning. Some may wonder whether the country can reconcile, work together and fulfill the promise of a more perfect union. Through the hope Christ offers, I believe God will give us the strength to heal and unite. Let us pray for leaders in public life that they may rise to the responsibilities entrusted to them with grace and courage. And may all of us as Catholics help each other be faithful and joyful witnesses to the healing love of Jesus.
PRAYER AFTER AN ELECTION
God of all nations, Father of the human family, we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise and the
many blessings of democracy we enjoy in these United States of America. We ask for your protection and guidance for all who devote themselves
to the common good, working for justice and peace at home and around the world. We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants, those who will serve us as president,
as legislators and judges, those in the military and law enforcement. Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord, with a common purpose,
dedication, and commitment to achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people, and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst. Amen.
As a reminder, this Monday, Nov. 21st, we will offer a Special Healing Mass at 12 noon
with the Sacrament of Anointing. Prayers will be offered for those in need of physical, spiritual, or emotional healing. Additional Priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
As we approach our Thanksgiving holiday this week let us thank God in prayer for all that we
have; for our families and friends, political leaders and military, teachers and students, and for peace here at home and throughout the world in the days ahead! Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless You all!
Fr. Jacek
