FAITH FORMATION
ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA Patron of World Youth Day
Tuesday, September 5 Mother Teresa of Calcutta was born on August 26, 1910 to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived.
At 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. In 1928, she said goodbye to her mother and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. She chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her—the poverty, the suffering, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people. In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as “a call within a call. The message was clear. I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.” She also heard a call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and instead, to “follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor.”
After receiving permission to leave Loreto and establish a new religious community, Sister Teresa took a nursing course for several months. She returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white sari and sandals - the ordinary dress of an Indian woman - she soon began work with the poor and sick. Volunteers who came to join her in the work, some of them former students, became the core of the Missionaries of Charity. Others helped by donating food, clothing, supplies, and the use of buildings. In 1952, the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former hostel, which became a home for the dying and the destitute. As the order expanded, services were also offered to orphans, abandoned children, alcoholics, the aging, and street people.
For the next 40 years, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly for the poor. 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On Sept. 5, 1997, God called her home. She was canonized by Pope Francis on Sept. 4, 2016.
“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”

CONFERRAL OF THE PALLIUM on JOSEPH W. CARDINAL TOBIN, C.Ss.R.
ARCHBISHOP OF NEWARK
THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF THE SACRED HEART
Thursday, September 14 at 2pm
ALL ARE WELCOME
In 2015, Pope Francis made a change to how the pallium - the Y-shaped, narrow liturgical vestment made of silk and wool, and worn by popes and metropolitan archbishops as a symbol of authority - is conferred.
The pallium has been given by the Pope to new metropolitan archbishops at a Vatican investiture ceremony held each year on June 29, the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, since the early days of the Pontificate of St. John Paul II. However, the investiture now takes place in a public ceremony at the home dioceses of the archbishops, rather than at the Vatican. At the conclusion of the Mass, Pope Francis handed each archbishop a pallium folded up in a small, simple wooden box tied with a brown ribbon. Vatican Master of Ceremonies Msgr. Guido Marini, said the new process will continue to symbolize communion between the See of Peter and the Successor of the Apostle and those who are chosen to carry out the episcopal ministry as metropolitan archbishop of an ecclesiastical province, and it will favor the participation of the local Church in an important moment of its life and history.

2nd COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND FOR CHURCH IN CENTRAL/EASTERN EUROPE Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Central and Eastern European countries have been working to rebuild political structures, social welfare, and their economies. Years after the fall of communism, even though some are now European Union citizens, the Catholics of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union still have great needs. Your generous support helps fund projects in 28 countries to build the pastoral capacity of the Church and to rebuild and restore the faith in these countries. The funds are used to support seminaries, youth ministry, social service programs, pastoral centers, church construction and renovation, and Catholic communications projects.

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is realistic with his disciples telling them that He must suffer,
die and rise. Peter rebukes the Lord, disagreeing with him, perhaps neither hearing nor understanding what it meant that Jesus would be raised. Jesus, in turn rebukes Peter, and teaches the disciples that if they wish to follow, the Cross is also theirs. The cross is ours, too, and we know that death leads to Resurrection.
As we all can see from the news media, the devastation in Texas from Hurricane Harvey is heartbreaking. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is working closely with affected local dioceses, Catholic Charities USA and St. Vincent de Paul, along with other relief organizations, to assess their needs. In the upcoming days, we will share more about the best ways to assist in the Gulf region. Let us pray for all those that have been impacted, our families and friends, that God may watch over them, keep them safe, and help all those homeless in their desperation and despair.
Let us remember and keep in our prayers our beloved Pastor, Fr. Floyd Rotunno, as well as his brother, Fr. Philip Rotunno, on the first Anniversary of Fr. Floyd’s death on September 3rd.
Lastly, on this Labor Day weekend let us pray: “Lord, on this Labor Day, we thank You for the blessing of work. We ask for strength to complete each day. We ask for rest when we are weary. We ask for Your guidance for everyone seeking employment, and we ask that You be with those whose faces we might never see but who work tirelessly each day for the good of us all. Amen”
God Bless You all! Fr. Jacek
