#Why I'm Catholic

#Why I'm Catholic for week #4

“I was born into a strict Catholic family and going to Mass on Sundays & Holy days was

always a priority. Jesus has unpleasant thing happen to test our faith. The best rule is: first God, then family & everything else comes last.” submitted by A. Eagan

As Catholics throughout the United States strug-gle with the painful issues facing the Church to-day, we recognize that it is a difficult time to be Catholic. In times like these we should join to-gether as a family of faith looking toward positive examples of hope and community We invite you to share your reflections and stories of your en-counters with the goodness of God in your life, and what you love about the Catholic Church! Let's build a community of hope.

We will be posting one comment each week in our bulletin. Please feel free to join the conversa-tion by sharing #WhyI'mCatholic using the cards available in the church vestibule. Drop them in the mail or the collection plate during Mass.

Top Ten Mistakes Christian Parents of Teens Make:

A countdown each week, from 10-1. 8. Spoiling your teen. We are all tempted to think that loving our kids means doing all we can to ensure they have all the opportunities and things we didn’t have growing up. This is a terrible assumption to make. It leads to an enormous amount of self-important, petty, and ungrateful kids. A lot of the time parents are well-intentioned in our spoiling, but our continual stream of money and stuff causes teens to never be satisfied and always wanting more. Your teen doesn’t need another piece of crap, what he needs is time and attention from you (that’s one expres-sion of spoiling that actually benefits your teen!). There are two things that can really set you back in life if we get them too early: a. Access to too much money. b. Access to too many opportunities. Parents need to recognize they’re doing their teens a disservice by spoiling them in either of these ways. Save the spoiling for the grandkids.

Dear friends, The winter PCA meeting was held on Jan. 17. All eight Catholic Churches in Chenango County are members, and one item on the agenda was the 4:00 pm Mass at St. Paul’s in Norwich. Our Bishop had recommended that each PCA offer a Sunday after-noon Mass. We discussed the decline in attendance at that Mass, as well as the hardship on Father Ralph in Norwich and Father Darr in Sherburne/New Berlin. The Liturgy team at St. Paul's also feels the stress of finding volunteers to minister at that Mass. Therefore, after voting, it was decided to eliminate that 4:00 Mass at St. Paul’s, as of the end of January, 2019. The PCA feels that our county offers multiple options for Catholics to find a weekend Mass that fits their schedule. We are especially happy in Greene at the number of parishioners that worship at both Saturday and Sunday Masses, depending on weekend plans and weather. Speaking of weather! It was great to have so many people working together on communication and planning of our weekend Masses last weekend with the snowstorm on Saturday night. Father Paul was very anxious to celebrate Mass with us as well as our friends at St. Josephs in Oxford, before

traveling to Kenya. Not a native of snow and ice, he appreciated the ride to and from Binghamton. Many thanks to Jim Norton and Anthony Brown-ing for helping with the transportation. Thanks also to those that worked together to make sure both Masses went well. In the future, we will make every attempt to change the answering machine on the church phone when a change is happening for a particular Mass or event. Audrée and I can make those answering machine changes from home, so feel free to call the church office number if you have questions. We will return your message if needed, during the next business day. Thank you for worshipping at ICC today. You are an important part of our parish family. Peace!~Mary Wentlent
