From the Desk of Fr. John / Del Escritorio de Padre Juan 2
A gentleman asked me
last week why we say
“and with your spirit”
when the priest says, “The
Lord be with you.” Some
of you who are a little
older might remember the
Latin rite. The priest said
“Dominus vobiscum” and
the congregation responded, “Et cum spiritu tuo” – and
with your spirit. So the response is a long used one. But
why that phrasing? In a couple of places in Scripture (Gal
6:18 and 2 Tim 4:22), St. Paul says, “May the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters.”
and “The Lord be with your spirit.” So there is a biblical
precedent for this response. Fr. Robert Tuzik writes in his
book, Praying the Roman Missal, “It is also important to
remember that the response “And with your spirit” is said
to the priest celebrant of the Eucharist. The assembly is
recognizing the ordination of the priest who is guided by
the Spirit in leading the community in prayer.
The “spirit” in “And with your spirit” is the spirit the
priest received in ordination that empowers him…”
This change was made because Pope John Paul asked that
the Missal be re-translated to stay closer to the Latin
phrasing. It is a very surprising change but over the last
few years, it seems we have made the change well.
Congratulations to the Craft Bazaar Committee for a
very successful Bazaar. A lot of people came to the
Bazaar and bought raffle chances.
Thanks so much for your dedication.
Please continue to pray for those who are struggling
with earthquakes and hurricanes.
The devastation has been horrible.
Escritura (Gal 6:18 y 2 Tim 4:22), San Pablo dice,
huracanes. La devastación ha sido horrible.
In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire
or having their lives end in tragedy. That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts:
Plan 2 Ways Out!” is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an
escape plan. Here’s this year’s key campaign messages:
* Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits
from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
* Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the
day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
* Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
* Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire
department to find.
* Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke,
heat, and fire.
* Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Songs for the 5pm, 8am & 10am Masses 3
Gathering Song: Sing to the Mountains
Sing to the mountains, sing to the sea.
Raise your voices, lift your hearts.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Let all the earth rejoice.
I will give thanks to you, my Lord.
You have answered my plea.
You have saved my soul from death.
You are my strength and my song.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, heaven and earth
are full of your glory.Text: Psalm 118; Bob Dufford, SJ, b. 1943; acc. by Sr. Theophane Hytrek, OSF,
1915-1992, © 1975, Robert J. Dufford, SJ and New Dawn Music
Psalm Response: The vineyard of the Lord is the house
of Israel.
Hear us, shepherd of Israel, from your throne on cheru-
bim shine out. Gather your strength, come save us!
Shepherd of Israel. You brought a vine from Egypt,
cleared out nations to plant it; stretched its branches to
the sea, its roots to the distant river. Why have you torn
down its walls? All who pass by steal the grapes,
Wild boars tear up its roots, beasts devour its fruit.
Turn our way, God of might, look down from heaven;
tend this vine, this vine you planted cherish once more. The English trans. of the refrain text from the Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981,

Presentation Song: How Great Thou Art
O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow’r thru-out the universe displayed!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
When thru the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin!Text: Stuart K. Hine, b. 1899 Tune: O STORE GUD, 11 10 11 10 with refrain; Stuart

Communion Song: Seed, Scattered and Sown
Seed, scattered and sown,
wheat, gathered and grown,
Bread, broken and shared as one,
the Living Bread of God.
Vine, fruit of the land, wine, work of our hands,
One cup that is shared by all;
the Living Cup, the Living Bread of God.
Is not the bread we break a sharing in our Lord?
Is not the cup we bless the blood of Christ out-poured?
The seed which falls on rock will wither and will die.
The seed within good ground will flower and have life.
As wheat upon the hills was gathered and was grown,
So may the church of God be gathered into one.Text :Didache 9, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, Mark 4:3-6;Dan Feiten Tune:

Closing Song: Canticle of the Sun
The heavens are telling the glory of God,
And all creation is shouting for joy.
Come, dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.
Praise for the sun, the bringer of day,
He carries the light of the Lord in his rays;
The moon and the stars
who light up the way unto your throne.
Praise for the wind that blows through the trees,
The seas mighty storms, the gentlest breeze;
They blow where they will,
they blow where they please to please the Lord.Text & Tune: Marty Haugen, b. 1950; © 1980, GIA Publications,

Nuestros pies finalmente pisan
tus umbrales, oh Jerusalén.
Jerusalén está construida en perfecta armonía;

Are you aware of the impact a
matching gift can have?
If you make donations to CHS through
#GivingTuesday, you might be able to DOUBLE
THE IMPACT!
Individual corporate matching gift programs are
charitable giving programs created by corporations
in which the company matches donations made
by employees. Many companies offer 1:1 matches,
but some offer 2:1 or higher matches.
Motorola matches 1:1
True Value matches 1:0.5
Illinois Tool Works Matches 3:1
Applying for a matching gift is usually quite easy
and straightforward, BUT it starts with the
employee. Simply ask your employer and your
spouse’s employer. Contact Anna O’Donnell,
Business Manager at
[email protected] for any
help you need in securing a matching gift.
DIRECTORY ADVERTISING
OPPORTUNITY
We have contracted with Guide Book Publishing
to create and distribute our Church of the Holy
Spirit Directory. The directory will include
information on our ministries, parishioner
contact information, and other very useful
material for the Parish. It will be the Who, What,
Where, When, Why, and How of our Church.
The book, which will be mailed directly to your
homes, is being provided at no cost to the Parish.
Local businesses are being asked to advertise in
our book. If you or someone you know would
like to be included as our advertiser, please
contact Anna O’Donnell at (847)882-7580
Recent survey results show that 92.1% of
parishioners would rather patronize a Directory
advertiser over a non-advertiser. So it pays to
advertise in our directory! Also, please remember
to support all of our participating advertisers.

Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly.
“From ancient times down
to the present, there is
found among various
peoples a certain
perception of that
hidden power which
hovers over the
course of things and
over the events of
human history.
Buddhism in its various
forms testifies to the essential
inadequacy of this changing world.
It proposes a way of life by which people can,
with confidence and trust, attain a state of perfect
liberation and reach supreme illumination either
through their own efforts or with divine help.
The Catholic Church rejects nothing of what is true and
holy in these religions. It has a high regard for the
manner of life and conduct, the precepts and doctrines
which although differing in many ways from its own
teaching, nevertheless often reflect a ray of that truth
which enlightens all men and women.”
(Second Vatican Council – Declaration on the Relation
of the Church to the Non‐Christian Religions 10/28/1965)
Diversity is part of our global world.
The Women’s Reflection Group will meet on:
Wednesday
October 11th at 9:30 a.m.

Saturday/Sabados

I believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in accordance of the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his Kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son he is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
y se hizo hombre;
y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre;
futuro. Amén.
