Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman Catholic
people with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the
transformation of ourselves and our world according to the teachings and
example of Jesus Christ.
Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, liturgy
and sacraments, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values,
and through love and support of each other.
Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through the
ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all
are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever.
Amen.

Readings and Resources
SUNDAY REFLECTION
GOD’S PROVIDENCE
Today’s readings celebrate God’s providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does.
Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us “as a mother comforts her child.” The prophet describes us not as the usual “children of God,” but as “babies.” We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God’s care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother.
Saint Paul’s trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can “make troubles” for him, because he has given himself completely to Jesus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship.
For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situated us in community, and evoked a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.

Your participation in the CMAA is important. If you have not had a chance to participate in the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this year, there is still time. A mailing should have arrived at your home. As your pastor, I encourage you to prayerfully reflect on God’s gifts to you and to give a gift to the CMAA. Participation is the key to a successful appeal and a chance for our parish to receive a parish rebate, too. Every gift helps! If you did not receive this mailing and would like to make a gift to the CMAA, please call the Diocese of Joliet Development Office at 815-838-8515. Or, if you wish to make your gift online, please visit www.jolietdioceseappeal.org.

A Prayer For Our Church
Heavenly Father, in every age, you have been our refuge. Yet again and still, we stand before you asking for your protection on your Holy Church. We place our Church in your hands, for without you we can do nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, continue to lead her in every thought and action to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a manifestation of your faithful covenant. For the victims of abuse and their families, pour out your healing and your peace. For the leaders of your Church, pour out your Spirit to guide them and inspire their decisions. For those who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness, sustain them by your grace. For all the faithful who are searching for answers, embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with your sacraments. We ask this in the name of your Son and our Brother, and through the Holy Spirit, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

** During May at Advantage Health Care, we estimate that 79 women made a "choice" that will change their lives forever and ended the lives of their unborn children.
** A woman who came back for her 3-week post-abortive checkup (women must return to the clinic to make sure their baby is gone) was crying and told me that her boyfriend pushed her into it. She has since broken up with him. I asked her if she had named her baby. She almost immediately said "Jasmine." We prayed together and I gave her a brochure for post-abortive healing. Please pray for this young woman to find hope and forgiveness and seek out relationships where respect for each other and life reign.
** We believe there were 6 SAVES in May!
** On the Saturday before Mother's Day we held our first "Bouquets of Blessings for Mother's Day" vigil. Many prayer angels came to surround the clinic with love and hope. Our efforts bore fruit when a young couple chose life! I gave the young mom flowers, baby booties, and information about Avenue Women's Center (the pro-life pregnancy center at 132 E. Irving Park just west of the abortion clinic). Both parents smiled as they left.
** One young woman was sitting in the parking lot talking with her friend. An older male sidewalk counselor started talking to them. She told him that she "can't afford" a baby. He told them about Avenue Women's and even brought them to the center. The center had not yet opened, so the he took down their phone number and they left. Laura followed up with her through text later and confirmed that she is keeping her baby! Laura also gave her the number for Optionline 1-800-712-4357, a national pregnancy helpline, which is fantastic through text and connects women with the pregnancy center nearest them. She texted Laura that she is so grateful to the counselor who got her out of the abortion clinic parking lot! This is a great example of how God uses all types of people to save lives: young, old, male, female, experienced, or beginner.
This male counselor had only been praying with us for about 1 month and never had any formal training. If you are feeling called to be on the sidewalk for women and children, don't worry that you're not prepared, or that you don't have the knowledge, or could never do what we do. Just take that leap of faith and let God sort out the details! Email or call us with any questions: 847-651-4877.

** We are trying to extend our hours until 1:00 pm. This way we could be there to see all of the post-abortive women leave. Why does it matter? It's too late to save the baby. That's true, but it's not too late to save souls of the mother and father. We have found that often women are more open to taking literature after the abortion. Many are already beginning to feel the gravity of their "choice." We don't want them to go home thinking no one cares or be told "it's no big deal" by well-meaning friends or, worse yet, become ravaged by guilt and turn to drinking, drugs or suicide. No, we want ALL post-abortive women and men to receive mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. THAT is why we would like to extend our vigil until 1:00 pm on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, to insure that women are offered a Project Rachel brochure to be a lifeline for their healing. Can you help?

Ascension of Our Lord in Oakbrook Terrace invites you to: Grief Support - A Healing Walk with Others
Tuesdays from 1 PM - 3 PM JULY 9, 16, 23, 30 AUGUST 6, & 13
Have you experienced the loss of a loved one through death? Perhaps a friendship came to an end? Maybe a job that brought you so much life no longer exists. We all experience loss more often than we think. Sometimes that loss can take a toll on our own self. Join us for a six-week grief support session. For some, it is helpful to go on this journey with others. While no two people experience grief the same way, one can rest in the fact nobody has to grieve alone. As we take a Healing Walk with Others this summer, may it become a time that brings peace. Registration is helpful, but not mandatory. Contact: Vince Zaprzal at 630-953-4415 or by email: [email protected]
