MARATHON

RUNNER

Jesus promises us JOY. He said: “that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)

C.S. Lewis stated in his sermon, “The Weight of Glory,” “…if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too

strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

St. Paul tells us: “persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” (Heb. 12:1)

There is a goal, a prize, and a crown for which we are to strive for—and it is nothing less than eternal joy in the loving presence of God Himself. Let’s not settle for less.

St. Paul reminds us that we run the race of faith because of the joy offered to us. You and I are destined for greatness. There is a prize and victor’s crown waiting for each of us.

Paul tells us: “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called” (1 Tim. 6). And, he declares: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:13). And, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Tim. 4:7-8).

There are so many shiny, sparkling, and sensational-looking prizes waved before our eyes in our culture and society. But, they are not lasting. They will not bring lasting satisfaction. We are to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Jesus is the foundation of our faith from start to finish. He went first by enduring the cross and despising the shame, and he ran perfectly so that he is now sitting down triumphantly at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus is the perfect model of faith from start to finish. He trusted His Father from beginning to end in His earthly race. And, now He is the giver and sustainer of our faith from start to finish.

Don’t be pleased too easily. Go for it all. Run the race to win the imperishable prize—life on high with Jesus Christ our Lord.

Fr. Dave

MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER

Pope Francis tells us that this special Holy Year is a time “to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters” (MV 10), an occasion to “open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters” (MV 15). We can do so when we recall how much God looked upon our own wounds and misery with unlim-ited love and mercy. Let us pray for the grace to be effec-tive signs of the Father’s mercy to others, with the assur-ance given by Doctor of the Church Saint Francis de Sales:

Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in his arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.

Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imagi-nations. Then, “touched by [God’s] compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others” (MV 14).

from Magnificat Year of Mercy Companion, 2016

NOTE: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Monday, August 15th, is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. But for those who may wish to attend a Mass in honor of Our Lady, there is the usual 7:00 a.m. Mass here at Holy Cross, the noon Mass at St. John on Campus, or 5:30 p.m. at St. Matthew.

FAITHFUL DEPARTED. Your prayers are re-

quested for the repose of the soul of Mary Byrnes. May her soul and all the souls of the Faithful Departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace

COFFEE & DONUTS. Come join us for Coffee &

Donuts after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Mass-es every Sunday. We need 2 more “host” volun-teers for this month. And we will soon be looking for volunteers to sign up for the Sundays of their

choice through December.

FAMILY FORMATION A Whole Family Approach to

Learning and Living the Catholic Faith

The Family Formation Program at Holy Cross serves families with children in Grades K-6. Families are support-ed and encouraged in their efforts to pray, worship, and grow in faith together as a Catholic family.

For families whose children are not enrolled in a Catholic school, Family Formation fulfills the need for religious education and sacramental preparation. However, all families with children in Grades K-6 are invited to come and be part of the Family Formation community.

For more information or if you would like to register for this year, please contact Cindy Howie at 352-8748. Deadline for registration is Monday, August 15th.

1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD YEAR CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Confirmation preparation classes for students attending public schools begin in September. Confirmation prepar-ation is a 3-year cycle that typically begins with monthly classes in 6th and 7th grade, and continues with weekly classes for 8th grade.

Registration forms can be sent to you, or pick one up at the Parish Office. Please return them to the Office by Monday, August 15th. Questions? Call the Parish Office at 352-8748.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer; He wants you to be His disciple and friend. To help you answer this call to deeper friendship with Christ, Holy Cross Parish will begin 9 sessions of Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gos-pel of John.

When? Monday, Sept. 19th, at 6:30 p.m., or Tuesday, Sept. 20th, at 9:30 a.m.

Follow Me will help you see how God—and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.

To register, call the Parish Office at 352-8748. Cost is $17 for the workbook.

THE CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is offered for pre-school children and is available at Holy Cross. It is an ap-proach to the religious formation of children that is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The children come to an ’atrium’ where they are given the opportunity to inde-pendently discover the beauty of the Catholic faith and their role as part of the body of Christ.

If you would like your preschooler to participate in this ex-ceptional program, please call Cindy Howie at 352-8748.
