GOSPEL: Luke 24:46-53 Today's reading is the dramatic conclusion of Luke's Gospel. We hear Jesus giving his farewell address to the apostles after his resurrection. He reminds them of who he is and who they are and will be. Once the promised Spirit has come, the apostles will venture out to preach and forgive sins in Jesus' name. They will build up his body, the Church. Jesus extends his hands over his friends, blesses them, and departs. But the ending is a happy one because those who believe in him know that Jesus is "with us always." The ascension is the last of the appearances of the risen Jesus to his apostles. In a way, we can say that he "saved the best 'til last," because at this time Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to the apostles. At the time, they had no idea what "power from on high" would mean for them or how this Power would change their lives. 1.) How do you feel when someone makes a promise to you like, "We're going someplace special on Sunday"? Or, "I promise to help you with your math every night?” Sometimes the promise is a promise of a surprise. "Be sure to come next week because we're having a surprise." How do you feel while you wait for the surprise? How do you feel when the promise (even if it isn't a surprise) is kept? 2.) Pentecost was Jesus' big surprise for his apostles. How does the Holy Spirit surprise you in your life? How do you and the Holy Spirit work together to surprise others? How could you, your group, and the Holy Spirit work together to surprise the poor, the sick, the lonely, or others in need?

EVANGELIO: Lucas 24:46-53 La lectura de hoy es la dramática conclusión del Evangelio de Lucas. Escuchamos a Jesús despedirse de los apóstoles después de la resurrección. El les recuerda quien es él y quienes son ellos y quienes serán. Una vez les promete enviar al Espíritu Santo, los apóstoles se aventurarán a predicar y a perdonar los pecados en nombre de Jesús. Ellos construirán su cuerpo, la Iglesia. Jesús extenderá sus manos sobre sus amigos, los bendecirá y partirá. Es un final feliz porque los que creen en él saben que Jesús está "siempre con nosotros." La ascensión es la última aparición de Jesús resucitado a sus apóstoles. En una manera podemos decir que "reservó lo mejor para el final," porque en ese momento Jesús prometió enviar al Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles. En ese momento ellos no tenían idea de lo que el "poder de lo alto" sig-nificaría para ellos y como ese poder cambiaría sus vidas. 1.) ¿Cómo te sientes cuando alguien te hace una promesa que te gusta? Por ejemplo, ir a un lugar especial el domingo. O la pro-mesa de ayudarte con tu tarea de matemática todas las noches. Algunas veces la promesa es una sorpresa: "Asegúrate de venir la semana entrante porque vamos a tener un sorpresa." ¿Cómo te sientes esperando la sorpresa? ¿Cómo te sientes cuando la pro-mesa es cumplida? 2.) Pentecostés fue la gran sorpresa de Jesús para los apóstoles. ¿Cómo te sorprende el Espíritu Santo en tu vida? ¿Cómo trabajan juntos, tú y el Espíritu Santo, para sorprender a otros? ¿Cómo tú y el Espíritu Santo pueden trabajar juntos para sorprender a los pobres, los enfermos, los que están solos, u otros necesitados ?

Life & Dignity Sunday: Today is Life & Dignity Sunday in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It is a day that Archbishop George Niederauer has designated for us to focus on the Catholic responsibility to be good and engaged citi-zens. Flores de Mayo: You are all invited to celebrate Flores de Mayo, Celebrating Mary in May. Every-day in May we will pray the rosary and offer flowers to our Blessed Mother Mary. During weekdays (Monday-Friday) we will begin at 6:00pm in the church. On the weekends (Saturday & Sunday) we will begin after the 5:30pm Mass. We encourage eve-ryone to come pray and offer flowers! The culmination will be celebrated on Sunday, May 23rd at the 5:30pm Mass. A reception will follow in the Cafeteria. Al-though the culmination will be on the 23rd of May, the daily rosaries will continue until the end of the month (May 31st).

Mass Intentions 2011: The Mass Intention Calendar for 2011 will open on Tuesday, June 1st at 8:30am. Only one intention will be taken per Mass except for Community Masses, which are held every Monday at 8:00am. In order to accommodate all of our parishioners’ re-quests, we are limiting requests to 10 per person. Forms are available at the Parish Office.

Children’s Liturgy: The Liturgy of the Word for Children will not be celebrated on Memorial Day week-end—Sunday, May 30th. The Liturgy for Children will conclude for summer recess on Sunday, June 6th and start up again on Sunday, August 29th, 2010.

FAREWELL BLESSING:

In the Hebrew scriptures the “farewell blessing” is a fairly common way to end the story of the lives of the great figures in Israel’s faith. The farewell blessings of Jacob, Moses, and David are particularly notable. At the end of Luke’s Gospel, we have a “farewell blessing” by Jesus; it is the only time that Jesus is described as giving a blessing to his disciples. Jesus’ farewell, of course, is different. Unlike Jacob, Moses, and David, who gave this blessing at the time of their deaths, Jesus bestows his blessing as he prepares to en-ter into new and glorious life seated at the right hand of God in heaven. His blessing, like that of his predecessors, is meant to give them strength and courage. But it also has another purpose: it prepares them to be sent out on a mission. In this way, it is a precursor to the dismissal blessing we re-ceive at the end of every Mass. Yes, the grace of God’s blessing strengthens us, but it is also a dynamic force that sends us out on a mission to continue the life and the work of the Risen Christ.© Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Flores de Mayo: Todos están invitados a la celebración de Flores de Mayo, honrando a la Santísi-ma Virgen María en Mayo. Durante los días de semana (lunes a viernes) comenza-remos a las 6:00pm, en la Iglesia. En el fin de semana sábado y domingo comenza-remos después de la misa de las 5:30pm. Venga a rezar el Santo Rosario con noso-tros y ofrecerle flores a la Virgen. La culminación será celebrada el Do-mingo 23 de Mayo en la Misa de 5:30pm. Habrá una recepción después en la Cafe-tería. BENDICIÓN DE DESPEDIDA: En las escrituras hebreas la “bendición de despedida” es una manera común de concluir la historia de la vida de las grandes figuras de la fe de Israel. Las bendiciones de despe-dida de Jacob, Moisés y David son particu-larmente notables. Al final del Evangelio según san Lucas, tenemos la “bendición de despedida” de Jesús; es la única vez en que se describe a Jesús dando una bendición a sus discípulos. Es claro que la despedida de Jesús es diferente. A diferencia de Jacob, Moisés y David, quienes impartieron su ben-dición de despedida próximos a su muerte, Jesús ofrece su bendición al tiempo que se prepara para entrar su nueva y gloriosa vida sentado a la derecha de Dios en el Cielo. Su bendición, como la de sus predecesores, es para darles fortaleza y valor. Pero también tiene otro propósito: los prepara para ir a cumplir su misión. De esta manera, es pre-cursora de la bendición de despedida que recibimos al final de cada misa. Sí, la gracia de la bendición de Dios nos fortalece, pero también es una fuerza dinámica que nos en-vía a cumplir la misión de continuar la vida y la obra de Cristo Resucitado.
