Gospel: luke 2: 41-52 Can you identify with Jesus in this wonderful story from Luke's Gospel? Jesus at the age of twelve is on the verge of becoming a man in the Jewish society of his day. He and his parents have traveled to Jerusalem to

celebrate the Passover. After the departure of Mary and Joseph, Jesus remains behind in the Temple. There he amazes the religious teachers with his wisdom and intelligence. When Jesus' parents discover him missing, they are upset. Jesus explains the importance of putting God first in our lives. When we do this, everything else in life will fall into place. 1.) What do we learn about Jesus in this story? How can you put God first in your life? Jesus understood his relationship with God. It enabled him to grow "in wisdom and age and grace." How do you think following Jesus' advice will help you in your family life?

Administrator’s Corner: December 30, 2012 Feast of the Holy Family: Year - C

Why is Jesus found in the temple?

The Feast of the Holy Family (Dec. 30th) includes the story of finding Jesus in the Temple, a story of love and obedience. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover, as was the custom for Jews of that time. They traveled in a large group for protec-tion against bandits who infested the hill country. So, it wasn’t surpris-ing that his parents didn’t miss Jesus as they started the return trip. Upon discovering him missing, they hurried back to Jerusalem.

On the third day of searching, they found Jesus in the Tem-ple. He was questioning the priests and amazing them with his under-standing. However, Mary asked how he could have caused his parents so much worry and Jesus replied, “Did you not know I must be in my Father’s house?”

Though they were puzzled by his answer, Mary and Joseph took Jesus back to Nazareth. He remained there in obedience to his parents until it was time for his public ministry. We learn from this story to obey not only God but also those in authority over us.

God bless you.

Fr. Alex

Padre Alex

For Your Information: Second Collections: TODAY: St. Vincent de Paul NEXT WEEK: Parish School TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his par-ents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Jo-seph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusa-lem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, every-one longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind!

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what shall be has not yet been re-

vealed. -1John 3:2a

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
