irst Reading: Amos 7:12-15

Our Hebrew Scripture reading continues the discussion of biblical prophecy that began last week. In this passage, the prophet Amos asserts that he never asked to be a prophet, nor did he receive formal training in prophecy. Like many prophets, he was engaged in other pursuits when he was summoned to be God’s spokesperson.

econd Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14

For the next several weeks our second reading will come from the Letter to the Ephesians. This letter was probably written within a decade of Paul’s death by a disciple who wished to continue Paul’s teaching. In this excerpt, the author reflects on the grandeur of God’s eternal plan. God always intended to bring forth a saved people from the nations of the world through the death and raising of Christ.

ospel: Mark 6:7-13

As the Gospel of Mark continues, Jesus sends forth the Twelve on a mission in the service of God’s reign .

JOINED TOGETHER IN HOLY MATRIMONY

Cara Perrone and Robert Mitchell

Jesus teaches the Disciples How to Turn the Day Around So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many

who were sick and cured them. (Mark 6: 7-13)

Today’s Gospel shows Jesus teaching His disciples how to help people turn their lives around for the better through repentance.

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

The first time it happened, Meagan was two. Mother and daughter went to the park that afternoon. At the end of the day, Mom was more than ready to go home. She was five months pregnant and she had been up late the night before working on deadline. She was exhausted and, frankly, in a lousy mood. She wanted to go home, shower and maybe take a nap.

Little Meagan, however, had a different idea. She was having a wonderful time with her friends and was determined to break free from the stroller. Mom said no. Meagan said yes. Mom said sit in the stroller. Meagan arched her back and attempted to climb out. Mom handed her a plastic container of apple juice. Meagan threw it to the street. Mom pushed the stroller faster. Meagan screamed louder.

The new mother was quickly learning that when parenting is going well, it's extraordinary. But, when it isn't, it's excruciating.

Finally, as Meagan made yet another attempt to escape the stroller, her exhausted mom held her in place. She got down on her knees, wiped Meagan's nose and teary eyes and pushed back her blond curls. Then Mom said something she had never said before:

"Can we turn the day around?"

Meagan looked puzzled. Then, surprisingly, the little girl seemed to comprehend what her mother was asking. It took a moment, but Meagan stifled her sobs and put her arms around her mother's neck. She seemed as relieved as her mom was. It was as if mother and daughter had hit an imaginary reset button and got the day back on track.

That was 25 years ago. Meagan is now a student in medical school. But still, Meagan's mom writes, "experience has taught us that we can turn the day around at any hour, even when it's close to midnight. When necessary, we can turn it around multiple times within the same 24-hour period. Sometimes Meagan is the one having a hard time, but there have been plenty of occasions when I'm the person who is struggling.

"It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while conversations are abrupt. Angry words are spoken. Or worse yet, no words are exchanged at all. Eyes roll. Shoulders shrug. Footsteps are heavy. Then finally, one of us will ask if we can start over again. And we do."[From "Turn It Around" by Mary Rae, The Boston Sunday Globe Magazine, March 29, 2015.]

In today's Gospel, Jesus sends the Twelve out to preach his Gospel: the love of God that enables us to "turn our days around." Repentance is more than feeling badly about what we have done (or not done); repentance is not just guilt or remorse. Repentance is to heal, to make whole again, to "turn the day around" and start over, as many times as it takes, as Meagan and her mom learn to do in their journeys from anxious mom to wise parent, from toddler to young woman and medical student. Each step of our life's journey to the reign of God can be a moment of grace, of encounter with the holy, of rebirth and transformation, of healing. God calls us, in every step of our journey, to proclaim his love and peace and to witness for others his justice and mercy. (Connections)

SERVING WITH DETACHMENT

Jesus sends out the Twelve two by two because he wants us to understand that we are never called to serve alone. Even when our mission is highly personal, it is accomplished in and for community. Adults: What is God calling me to do in my life? Is

answering the call easy or do I struggle to accept it?

Children: Do I realize that Jesus wants me to help in doing his work? How is he asking me to serve others?

A Family Perspective: Families who work together to accomplish routine household tasks know that the benefits are more than efficiency. In sharing daily tasks, we accomplish more, but we also build relationships that last—and it's a lot more fun! Jesus sent his disciples in pairs to minister in his name. Perhaps the job was accomplished more effectively this way, but more importantly, Jesus' mission was accomplished more authentically. The Christian message can only authentically be proclaimed in and through the community of faith. In our work with others, we build this community of faith and can invite others to share in it. As you gather as a family, talk about some household tasks that are more easily accomplished when two or more people work together. Talk about how working together not only makes the job easier, but also makes the task more fun because we are able to spend time together. Why do you think Jesus sent out his disciples in pairs? Observe that Jesus continues to give us a community with which we share our life of discipleship—our family and the community of the Church.

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY AND BLACK AND

INDIAN MISSION COLLECTION

Dear Friends in Christ, This month, parishes are taking up a special

combined collection that serves a variety of important needs. I ask you to prayerfully consider participating with a generous gift. The Catholic Communications Campaign supports

projects throughout the world that evangelize both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. With the growth of new media, people all over the globe have greater opportunities to connect with the mission of the Catholic Church. Funds from this collection provide grants to support local and international efforts that bring our message of hope, love, and Christ's salvation to all. As the voices of our secular society seem to drown out the truth and beauty of our faith, your support of this collection will help make our voices be heard. Catholic University of America is the national

university of the Catholic Church. As such, it educates clergy, religious and young men and women throughout the country. Your support of this month's collection will help underwrite the financial aid program at Catholic University so that it continues to be a viable option for those who would not otherwise be able to attend. The Black and Indian Mission Collection serves as a

great tool in evangelization. Your support impacts the daily pastoral work of those who bring the Catholic faith to Indian reservations, urban centers and Alaskan Native parishes and mission schools. Please support these efforts through prayer and your financial support. On behalf of all those who will benefit from your

stewardship with a gift to this month's special combined collection, I thank you.

Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D. Bishop of Paterson
