SPECIAL COLLECTION
VICTIMS OF HURRICANE
LAURA
Bishop DiMarzio has requested that
all the Parishes in Brooklyn and
Queens take up a special collection on the weekend of
September 26th and 27th, to give aid and support to the
victims of Hurricane Laura and the California wild-
fires. Please be as generous as you can and pray for all
those affected by these devastating natural disasters.
ST. MATTHEW
Saint of the Day for September 21st
Matthew was a Jew who worked for the
occupying Roman forces, collecting taxes
from other Jews. The Romans were not
scrupulous about what the “tax farmers” got for them-
selves. Hence the latter, known as “publicans,” were
generally hated as traitors by their fellow Jews. The
Pharisees lumped them with “sinners” (see Matthew
9:11-13). So it was shocking to them to hear Jesus call
such a man to be one of his intimate followers.
Matthew got Jesus in further trouble by having a sort
of going away party at his house. The Gospel tells us
that many tax collectors and “those known as sinners”
came to the dinner. The Pharisees were still more
badly shocked. What business did the supposedly
great teacher have associating with such immoral peo-
ple? Jesus’ answer was, “Those who are well do not
need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the
meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I
did not come to call the righteous but sin-
ners” (Matthew 9:12b-13). Jesus is not setting aside
ritual and worship; he is saying that loving others is
even more important.
No other particular incidents about Matthew are found
in the New Testament.
Saint Matthew is the Patron Saint of: Accountants,
Actors, Bankers, Bookkeepers, Tax collectors and
Taxi Drivers franciscanmedia.org

Matthew 20:1-16a
Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word
Today we hear the parable of the landowner who hires
workers for his vineyard throughout the day, some at
sunrise, some just before evening. We are those work-
ers. We are called to follow Christ into the fields and
make disciples of all nations. We may have been
called at an early age, in middle age, or when we are
old. But as Christians we are all called to this mission.
To use the words of Paul and Isaiah, may we magnify
Christ in our bodies as we call upon the Lord in our
midst.

estamos llamados a esa misión.

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION
The safety of all is our utmost concern. Because of
this, we are not tired of reminding everyone to observe
the safety guidelines. We strongly ask everyone to
receive Holy Communion in the hand and must leave
their mask on when approaching the priest; after re-
ceiving the Sacred Host, move to the side, lower the
mask and consume the Sacred Host, then put back the
mask and return to your seat.
asiento.
SAFETY IN CHURCH
Face masks are mandatory throughout the Mass.
Social distancing is to be kept. Six feet distance is re-
quired from one family to the other. Sanitize your
hands when you enter and exit the Church.
