Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 Christ Jesus ... destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. — 2 Timothy 1:10b

CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD said to Abram: All the families of the earth shall find blessing in you (Genesis 12:1-4a) Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — God has called us to a holy life, not because of our works but according to grace (2 Timothy 1:8b-10). Dear Parishioners LENTEN OBSERVANCES … A reminder: During Lent we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays, beginning immediately after the noon Mass, with Benediction and Reposition at 6:30 PM. Drop in at any time, especially on your way home from work, and add some silent prayer time with the Lord to your hectic day. Please remember to observe a prayerful silence while present before Our Lord, waiting to feel his voice, and so as not to interfere with the prayers of others. Also, Stations of the Cross will take place during the Fridays of Lent; 6 PM in English, and after the 7 PM Mass in Spanish. Please join your brothers and sisters in the Lord for this very special prayer recalling and joining Our Lord in His final day, leading up to His crucifixion. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE … During Lent, a few of our Lenten Observances revolve around fasting and abstinence. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church (that's us), the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. SPANISH LENTEN RETREAT … St. Raymond’s Parish will be having a Spanish Lenten Retreat on Saturday, March 14 from 2PM -5PM for the entire community. All are invited to take time out of their day to dedicate it to the Lord in prayer. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … Our Knights of Columbus council is looking for more members. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we

receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

Queridos Feligreses, OBSERVACIONES DE CUARESMA ... Un recordatorio: Durante la Cuaresma tendremos adoración eucarística los miércoles, comenzando inmediatamente después de la misa del mediodía, con bendición y reposicionamiento a las 6:30 PM. Pueden pasar en cualquier momento, especialmente en su camino a casa del trabajo, y tener un tiempo de oración silenciosa con el Señor en su día agitado. Recordar de orar en silencio mientras está presente ante Nuestro Señor, esperando sentir su voz y no interferir con las oraciones de los demás. Además, las Estaciones de la Cruz se llevarán a cabo durante los viernes de Cuaresma; 6 PM en inglés, y después de las 7 PM misa en español. Durante la Cuaresma, algunas de nuestras celebraciones de Cuaresma giran alrededor del ayuno y abstinencia. De acuerdo con la Conferencia Estadounidense de Obispos Católicos: El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días obligación de ayuno y abstinencia para los católicos. Además, los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia obligatorios. Para los miembros de la Iglesia Católica que siguen el rito latino (que somos nosotros), las normas sobre el ayuno son obligatorias desde los 18 años hasta los 59 años. Cuando se ayuna, una persona se le permite comer una comida completa, así como dos comidas más pequeñas que en conjunto no son iguales a una comida completa. Las normas concernientes a la abstinencia de carne son obligatorias para miembros de la Iglesia Católica del rito latino de los 14 años en adelante. Esto es para limitar la posibilidad de que nuestro Señor, en la forma de la Eucaristía, caiga al suelo. También recordar que la respuesta apropiada al sacerdote antes de recibir la Sagrada Comunión es "Amén", no "Gracias". Los católicos deben casarse en la iglesia y, si es casado sólo civilmente, debe hablar con uno de los sacerdotes acerca de recibir el sacramento en la iglesia (llamado convalidación) ... por favor saber que son bienvenidos para hacer preguntas y recibir dirección y consejos sobre el SACRAMENTO DEL MATRIMONIO … Por favor recuerde de asegurar la fecha para su ceremonia antes de hacer cualquier arreglos con los proveedores, los conductores de la limosina, la familia y los amigos. CAMBIO Cuaresma es cambio y cambiar no es fácil. Para poder cambiar debemos dejar algo atrás. Hoy escuchamos acerca de un hombre muy viejo que decide responder al llamado de Dios. Abram atraviesa por una tremenda cantidad de cambios cuando todo lo deja y lo arriesga por la promesa de Dios. Jesús cambia, se transfigura, justo delante de los ojos de sus discípulos. Las escrituras en Cuaresma nos llaman a cambiar, a ser transfigurados, para que también nosotros pronto participemos en la gloria de Dios. ¿Qué nos pide Dios dejar atrás? ¿Estamos dispuestos a arriesgarlo todo por la promesa que Dios hace? Estas son las preguntas centrales en el camino de conversión de la Cuaresma. LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura—Abram partió como se lo había ordenado el Señor (Génesis 12:1-4a).
