The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College

The 2017-2018 Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College is now available in our parish library - published by the Cardinal Newman Society which is dedicated to informing Catholic families about the faithfulness of Catholic Colleges.

Are Ghosts Real? If we take the words of Jesus seriously, they must be. In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 24:35-48), the disciples, seeing the Risen Lord for the first me, are terrified, thinking they are seeing a ghost. In response, Jesus says to them, “Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” So what are ghosts? Without claiming to know everything about them, those in the Church who study such things say that a being known as a ghost can be one of two things. It could be demon. Or

it could be a soul in Purgatory. How can we tell the difference? Generally, demons try to scare people. For example, they may make frightening noises, slam doors or knock over furniture. They may also be destruc ve, for example breaking things. Saint John Vianney had his bed set on fire by a demon (he survived). It is important to note that demons can do no more than God permits. That seldom goes so far as physically harming someone. They are like dogs on a chain, which may bark at you ferociously, but can’t hurt you as long as you keep a safe distance from them. People can be harassed by demons for a number of reasons. They may have some unconfessed mortal sin on their soul, have been cursed by someone, or have engaged in some occult prac ce or game. Or demons may be trying to distract them or discourage them from doing some great work God is calling them to. Or God may simply be allowing the harassment so that we will build up our spiritual muscles and inventory of spiritual weapons by figh ng the demons off, or to show God’s power over demons. Souls from Purgatory, by contrast, aren’t out to scare people. They just want to get our a en on, seeking our prayers so that they can get to heaven sooner. The sound of footsteps in an otherwise empty hallway, a so voice speaking in an otherwise empty room, mysterious knocking noises, some small item being knocked off a shelf, doors opening or closing without any visible cause, and visions of light or darkness in what seems to be a human form are probably caused by some soul in Purgatory. God allows these souls to contact us so that we will realize the importance of praying for them and will do so. God may also allow ghosts of both types to manifest themselves to us to try to wake us up if we are going in the wrong direc on spiritually. He has also provided the Church with very effec ve ways to deal with both kinds of ghosts. There are a number of exorcis c or deliverance prayers to chase demons away. Some are reserved to priests who have been trained and commissioned as official exorcists by their bishop. Others can be said by any priest. S ll other prayers can be said by lay people. Simple prayers like the “Our Father,’ “Hail Mary,” and “St. Michael Prayer” can be very effec ve against evil, as can holy water and blessed salt. Another effec ve form of spiritual warfare against demons are house blessings. With regard to the possible presence of demons in the home, some blessings are preventa ve, others reac ve. I recommend using the prayers and sacramentals you have at hand first, and then if strange phenomena are s ll happening to you or in your home, ask a priest for advice and prayers. As for souls in Purgatory manifes ng themselves to us, the most effec ve remedy is to have one or more Masses said for that soul. The Mass is the highest form of prayer there is on earth. You don’t have to know who the soul is. You can just explain what’s happening to a priest and he can apply a Mass to the wellbeing of that soul. God knows who it is. Other ways of helping the soul include obtaining indulgences and praying the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet for him or her. Helping souls in Purgatory is part of being a member of the “Communion of Saints” that we refer to in the Creed. Some mes we may need a reminder of that. Both figh ng demons and helping souls in Purgatory are ways in which we can be “co-workers with God,” as Saint Paul writes (1 Corinthians 3:9). By God’s grace and power and with the means He has given us, we can be vehicles for the Love that triumphed over death to con nue spreading that love throughout crea on. Easter Blessings, Father Rudolph

Saint of the Day Saint Mafalda of Portugal

Mafalda was the daughter of Sancho I, king of Portugal. She was born in 1206. In 1215 she was married to her cousin Henry I, king of Cas le, now a part of Spain. But the next year the marriage was annulled for reasons of consanguinity (being too closely related) and she returned to Portugal. She became a nun and devoted her wealth to rebuilding Oporto Cathedral, building a bridge over the river Tamega, and founding a hostel for pilgrims and a hospital for widows. As a nun she lived an asce c life, sleeping on the ground or devo ng nights to prayer. At the end of her life she chose sackcloth and ashes for her bed. She died in 1257. Her last words were “Lord, I hope in you.” In 1617 her body was exhumed and found to be both flexible and incorrupt. Saint Mafalda of Portugal, pray for us! Classical Educa on Enhances Excellence at St. Raphael Catholic School!

More and more parents and schools throughout the country are discovering the advantages of Catholic Classical Educa on. Since last summer, Principal Doug Ballinger, the School Advisory Council, the St. Raphael school faculty, Fr. Rudolph and others have been learning about classical educa on, how it might benefit our students, and how it might be incorporated into the exis ng great educa onal experience at St. Raphael Catholic School. On Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 6:30 pm, in Marian Hall there will be a presenta on by Michael Adkins, Dean of Students at St. Agnes School in St. Paul and an expert on classical educa on. Mr. Ballinger and Fr. Rudolph will also share their thoughts on how classical educa on can benefit our students. All are welcome to a end and learn about this exci ng transi on for our students. The pillars of classical educa on are grammar, logic, rhetoric and La n. Classical educa on encourages students to become life-long learners who read, write and speak effec vely, think cri cally and solve problems logically and who have a strong sense of wonder and depth of inquiry. Classical educa on also seeks to encourage responsible ci zens who seek goodness, truth and beauty. Briefly put, these help students to be er think, understand, express themselves and learn foreign languages. Our inten on is to incorporate classical educa on without taking away any of the good things we already have at St. Raphael Catholic School. To assist with the incorpora on of the elements of classical educa on, we have formed a Transi on Commi ee who will help make sure that St. Raphael School uses the best prac ces and curricula possible as we move forward.
