From the pastor… The 5th Sunday of Easter – In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares “I am the true vine and my Father is the vine grower. He prunes away every barren branch, but the fruitful ones he trims clean to increase their yield.” Pruning is necessary in our lives as well as in vineyards. However, when we remain connected to the vine, pruning will be a natural and helpful procedure. On a daily basis, through prayer, we must be determined to stay connected to the vine. When we remain connected to God, our lives will be productive and bear much fruit. Next weekend we will celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter . The readings at Mass will be taken from Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; 1 John 4: 7-10; and John 15: 9-17. Come prepared. May 3rd is the Feast Day of the Apostles Philip and James. Philip is our Patron Saint and came from the same town as Peter and Andrew – Bethsaida in Galilee. Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to realize who Jesus was. On one occasion Philip told Nathanael we have found the “one about whom Moses wrote”, Jesus of Nazareth – but Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come from Nazareth? Philip said to him “Come and see.” (Jn. 1:44-46) Happy Feast Day! A Little about the history of our parish and its name – In 1898 a chapel was built at the corner of East Sharpe Street and South Tradd Street in Statesville. It is located across the street from the current Statesville Police Department. The Key Chapel was built by Mrs. Anna Thornton Key in honor of husband - Philip Barton Key, who died on September 25, 1896. Thus the name St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church. Philip was a distant relative of Francis Scott Key who wrote the lyrics of our Na-tional Anthem -The Stars Spangled Banner. The Chapel was consecrated by Bishop Leo M. Haid January 20, 1901 with James Cardinal Gibbons in attendance. This Chapel was the home to the small Catholic Community in Statesville until 1956. Go check it out - it is listed in the Historic Register. A BIG THANKS TO ALL who worked so hard in planning and working the Forward With Christ Spring-Fling & Yard Sale this weekend. We are also most grateful to all those who attended and supported this worthwhile and important par-ish endeavor. May God bless you in your goodness and support of our parish church. May 1st is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and the begin-ning of the Month of Mary. PRAY THE ROSARY. Mediat-ing on the mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary, may we grow closer to Jesus through Mary. Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament will take place this Friday (5/4) after the 9 a.m. Mass with reposition at 5 p.m. Exposition will not take place during the summer months of June, July, and August. The rosary will be prayed at 8:40 a.m. this Saturday (5/5), followed by Mass at 9 a.m. And you are invited! We wish to honor our Graduates at the Masses on the week-end of May 19th & 20th. Please see this bulletin for further details.
