PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD– April 9, 2017
The week leading up to Easter is one rich in tradition for the
Church, so here’s your step-by-step guide to Holy Week!
Palm Sunday The Sunday before His Passion, Jesus entered Jerusalem to
begin the celebration of Passover with His disciples. Though He is treated with a triumphant entrance by His followers (which commemorate with our palm branches), there is a
somber tone to this celebration, as Jesus (and we) know that this entrance is the beginning of a turbulent week.
Holy Thursday
The night before He died, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, leaving behind the greatest gift of Himself, so we spend
intentional time on this night reflecting on that great gift. Holy Thursday also celebrates so many other things, however,
including a renewal of vocational promises, the washing of the feet, and more. Following the Holy Thursday Mass, we follow Jesus into the Garden of Gethsemane, or at least our version. We commemorate Jesus’ hours of prayer before His Passion
with our own memorial, and we don’t end Mass with the Sign of the Cross to signify that the three days of Triduum are one
continuous celebration.
Good Friday The title of “Good” on the day Jesus died might seem ironic,
but it is a good day for us because through that act, Jesus saved us from sin. Fun fact – Good Friday is the only day each year
that there is no Mass held in the Catholic Church (only services are held on Good Friday). We leave the church in
silence and are called to maintain a somber attitude throughout the next day.
Holy Saturday
On this day, we await the coming of Christ in His Resurrection but also take the time to reflect on the whole of our beautiful faith with the renewal of our baptismal vows, readings from several parts of salvation history, and glory and awe in the
great act of Jesus’ Resurrection. We also welcome new members of the church through our RCIA program and
celebrate our great faith as a whole.

In our weekly “Did you know?” section, we’ll try to explain “mysteries of the Mass” and other parts of the Catholic faith. If
you have a question you’d like to submit, please email [email protected].

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH: The first item announces our Spanish-language programming for the Easter Triduum, including on Holy Thursday for the first time in the history of our parish, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in Spanish (8 p.m. in the chapel). If you can’t make the 7 p.m. Mass in the main church, you are most welcome to the Mass at 8 p.m. with the Hispanic community! The second article provides Fr. Rojas’ answer to a recent question from a number of parishioners.
