FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SAINTS FOR THE “AINT’S” It happened just a few weeks ago during the last days leading up to the Christmas holiday. I was out driving on Richmond Road and a firetruck, siren blaring, pulled right in back of me. Naturally I pulled over to the right lane to let the firefighters go by. However, as I attempted to get back into traffic, I was “cut off” as they say, by a young man who loudly beeped his horn and got ahead of me. As we both stopped at the light, I then said something I shouldn’t have to this young man. It was not a “dirty word” but not nice at all. The young driver responded with a bad word and started screaming at me. There were some friends of his sitting in the back seat. One turned to me and said shaking his head, “I can’t believe what I’m hearing!” Now I don’t know if he meant that remark for his friend or for me as a “man of the cloth.” After I calmed down, I realized what a poor example I set as a Catholic and more importantly as a priest. Perhaps something like that has happened to you driving on Staten Island! Followers of Christ are meant to be different; in fact we need to be above the common denominator. The writer G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “The best argument against Christianity is Christians themselves!” Certainly that should not be the case. It has often been said that the faith is more often “Caught than taught.” What that means is that most of the time the witness of a sincere, authentic Catholic life speaks volumes to a doubting and unbeliev-ing world. Who were the people who truly took Jesus words seriously and effectively applied them in their own lives? Of course, it was the saints who truly are the heroes and heroines of God. On January 4th, we celebrated the feast of a saint by the name of Elizabeth Ann Seton. Perhaps you might have heard of her. She is a “local” saint as well, having lived here in New York City and for a time right on Staten Island. Mother Seton as she was later called, really was converted to the faith by the power of a good example. Born Elizabeth Bayley in 1774 of a distinguished Episcopalian family, her father was for a time the Rector of Saint Andrew’s Church in Richmondtown. When Elizabeth was nineteen years old, she married William Seton a prominent New York City busi-nessman. When her husband became ill with Yellow Fever, the family went to Italy in hopes that the warm-er climate would be healthier. During her stay there, Elizabeth Seton witnessed the power of a good Catho-lic example. After her husband died, she stayed with a family-the Filicchi’s who were very devout Catholics. Elizabeth was so impressed by their prayer, devotion to the Holy Eucharist and charity. On March 14, 1805, she was received into the Catholic Church at Saint Peter’s in lower Manhattan. The rest, as they say, is “History.” She established the first Catholic school in Baltimore in 1808. The next year Mother Seton founded a religious community in Emmitsburg, Maryland that became known as the Sis-ters of Charity. The Sisters of Charity are still with us today and that order still does a tremendous of good work here in the Archdiocese today. In the life of Mother Seton, we can really see the good that one person can do when they are motivat-ed by the ideals of Jesus Christ in the gospel. Thank God we have the example of the saints who inspire us and teach us that we can “be more” and “do more” as Catholics! As saints we are often the “aint’s!” But may the good example of Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton inspire us this week. Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
