2008

For months all we heard was that this was going to be the worst Christmas in recent memory.

Every news report added more gloom and doom: an economic meltdown, a dismal shopping season,

escalating warfare, widespread corruption, climatic chaos, new scandals. While these challenging times

may be tough in many ways for many people, (as seen in a slight decrease in our parish’s weekly

contribution average in 2008), and although we will not set another record Christmas collection this year,

there is good news. Some have graciously increased their offerings to offset the loss of support from

their less fortunate sisters and brothers. And almost everyone has been fulfilling their pledge – some

have even completed their pledge - to our “Recapture the Dream” capital campaign! May God bless

everyone for their goodness to His Church.

FIRST RECONCILIATION/ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES

On the evenings of our Penance Services, we seek God’s

mercy and forgiveness - to strengthen our hope in God’s faithfulness

and eternal love - and to renew our faith in God’s ability to turn our

darkness into this marvelous light. Thank you to our HUSBAND and

WIFE team, Gerry and Lorraine DeMan for our wonderful music,

Sandi Kaufman, Anita Peterson and Rosemarie Salvatore, our lectors,

Andy Fenwick, our altar server and our Spiritual Life Committee who

assisted at the Advent Penance Service. Thanks to our parents and

communicants who participated in our 1st Reconciliation Service and

especially Father Tom Serafin for his power point presentation which

the children thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you Jim Hartmann for

operating your laptop and projector for Father Tom’s demonstration.

Thank you Betty Hatler for preparing the children so well! Thanks for

our priests who brought God’s love and mercy to all people during the

First Reconciliation and Advent Services: Father Mike, Father Chuck,

Father Donald Cooper, Father George Farrell, Father Hal Hermanns, Father Mark Kreder, Msgr. Thomas Madden, Father

Thomas Serafin and Father Jim Sheerin. Music was provided by Gerry DeMan and Joe Fazio at the Advent Service and

James and Giszelle Borbajo were our faithful altar servers. And dinner afterwards? Thank you Laura Yanitelli for another

delicious meal!

ADVENT DECORATIONS

One way to show our trustworthiness is to be more ‘hands-on’ with the Church’s ministries and worship. God’s spirit

remains alive in Saint Mary Church and was so evident over the Christmas season! May the Lord bless all who gave witness

to the Son by their gift to time, talent and treasure. Here are some examples: please remember them ALL in your prayers!

We started Advent by changing our missals - Today’s Missal and the Music Issue - with the help of Mrs. Betty Hatler’s 8th grade

class and Mrs. Irene Solleder’s 7th grade class. Thank you Victor and Linda Verdino for picking up the Advent wreaths from

Mullers in Newark. Thank you Linda Verdino, Gloria Ryan,

Judy Hardin, Fran and Carol Waples for the Main Decorating

during Lent. Our outside Advent Wreath was decorated by Ray

Mazzeo - it looked great again this year Ray! Linda did another

wonderful job on the Advent Wreath in the priests residence

and our bows couldn’t have been made nicer, Alice Helble and

Kathy Bartolomeo, thank you. Thank you to the members of

our Spiritual Life Committee who for the 4 Sundays of Advent

asked families to light the Advent Wreath as part of our

Opening Prayer. And thank you to all the families at our 4

weekend masses during Advent that said ‘yes’ and felt honored

to assist.

CHRISTMAS MAILING

Pat Bennett, Audrey Cuccinelli, Terry DeCicco, Terry

Laurenzo, Bert Manning, Nan Mulcahy, Anna Parry, Terry

Scannell, Janet Whipple and Mary Williams made our

Christmas mailing possible. They folded the letters and placed

labels on both envelopes and got the mailing to the post office on time before our deadline! Thank you Audrey Cuccinelli and

John Zaremba who collated the programs for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Thank you John Zaremba, James Kowalski,

Audrey Cuccinelli and Paul John Cuccinelli who inserted our Christmas Day bulletins. Thank you Mary O’Keefe who entered

all the data into the computer for the Christmas Thank You’s.

FACULTY LUNCHEON

Thank you to our priests, high school and elementary school administration, teachers and staff for coming together

to share the gift of friendship at our Christmas luncheon. Thanks to Pat Bennett, Nan Mulcahy and Terry Scannell for setting

up, serving and cleaning up. What a nice gathering!

CHURCH WREATHS

The Church wreaths were carried from the basement of our old rectory to our church by our 8th Grade Students:

Vincent Belgiovine, Connor Cuccinelli, Sebastian Dawidowski, Edward Kos, Liam Gardner, John Luzzi, Daniel Sowinski,

Nicholas Storie, Justin Vasquez. These guys carried the Christmas lights upstairs and the big bows to decorate the big

wreaths. Thank you Paul John Cuccinelli who carried all 10 bow bins back to the storage area in the Parish Center - ON A

SNOW DAY off from school. Paul, you deserve extra credit for that! Our inside wreaths were FLUFFED by Fran Waples.

Thanks to Fran Waples and Linda Verdino for placing the bows on the wreaths which were then hung nearly 20 feet up by

Justin VanDyk and Kevin Brown while Danny VanDyk and Dennis VanDyk hung the garland on the side walls of the church.

Thank you Nicole VanDyk for cleaning up and vacuuming afterwards.

LIGHTS

Thank you John Zaremba who tested all our Christmas lights to make sure when we began decorating, everything

placed on the trees would work. And we can’t forget to thank Kevin Brown who in the coldest of weather was outside hanging

lights on the trees and bushes outside of church. That’s not a job we have volunteers for so we are grateful.

Thanks to Sal DiBrita and Kevin Brown for putting the wreaths on the front of the Church and the wreaths on the priests

residence. And that was a COLD Saturday morning! Thank you! Thank you Kathy Bartolomeo for making the bows.

INSIDE MAIN DECORATING

Our helpers get all lined up and given their direction from Linda Verdino who is our GREAT ORGANIZER! We need

you and thank you for always being here for us. Thanks for coming and waiting for the delivery of our Christmas flowers and

making sure all we ordered did indeed arrive.

Madeline Nodarse and Ann Signore decorated the Christmas wreaths on the altar and placed the flowers beneath.

Thank you.

Maria Immediate, Lorraine Russo and Irene Smith beautifully placed all the Nativity pieces by the creche and decorated

the stable with greens. And thanks to Dan Moran for hanging the STAR above the creche.

Again, thanks to Alice Helble for making red bows throughout church. Thank you to JoAnn Bartlett and Eileen Hiller

for hanging the red drapes beneath the balcony. Thank you Carol Waples, Joanne Wilczynski and Diana Wilczynski for

hanging the blue drapes over the balcony windows, hanging the blue drapes behind the inside creche. Thank you Fran Waples

for putting together the creche.

And thanks to the following who brought the flowers into the main sanctuary of the church, opened the flowers, brought

flowers to the residence, swept, cleaned, threw away garbage and stayed to help for many hours in the afternoon to help make

the church look as beautiful as it did: Maureen Doren, Carol Waples, Maria Immediate, Lorraine Russo, Joanne Wilczynski,

Norma Irizarry, Fran Waples, Irene Smith and Linda Verdino.

Bobby Fisher, Jonathan Legregin and Michael Carey carried the inside Creche table from the garages to the main

sanctuary area of church.

OUTDOOR CRECHE

Thank you to Tony and Marie Lawlor and Andy Fenwick who assembled and broke down our outdoor creche again

this year. Thank you Fran and Carol Waples for ‘taking charge’ and moved the statues from the garage and placed them by

the creche. They were assisted by Linda Verdino, Nikki Stupienski and Glen Stupienski! Thank you Glen! The Statues were

pulled out of the cartons in the garage and placed in Glen’s pick-up and driven to the creche to keep them as safe as possible.

Thank you Fran Waples for keeping that parking spot in the street vacant for Glen’s truck. And when Christmas was over, they

all came back and packed up the statues on another cold day. And thanks for raking up and bagging the hay too!

STAINED GLASS WINDOW

and

CHRISTMAS TREES

Our stained glass window which was protected in the closet in our new parish center was brought to our sanctuary

space and prominently placed by Tony Bruton of Tara Construction - [201] 939-3773, Rich Doyle, Dan Moran, Dennis

VanDyk, Rich Moller, Anthony Marrone. Doors were opened by Erin Marrone who also vacuumed afterwards. The window

was brought back by the same men and carefully placed in a safe spot downstairs. Dennis VanDyk took down the crucifix so

the Christmas window could go up and Erin Marrone made sure the Cross and its stand used for processions during Mass

was now placed on the Sanctuary.

The trees this year were purchased at Meadowlands Hardware in East Rutherford and everyone had many

compliments. Our tree committee consisted of men and WOMEN - and we’d like to thank Joseph Schultz, Robert Schult,

Stanley Schultz, Dennis VanDyk, James Howell, Daniel Howell, Elyse Howell, Cabrini Howell, Jim Howell, Gerry Bellotti, Jean

Marie Bellotti, Erin Marrone, Anthony Marrone, Mike Schmeding, Don Vaughn, Ricky Vaughn, John Hardin, Erik Gaston,

Jeannette Gaston, Andrew Gaston, Gabrielle Gaston, Patrick O’Keefe, Brian O’Keefe, Matthew Jasko, Steven Jasko, Larry

Boland, Rory Doyle, Rich Doyle, Aidan Doyle, Colin Doyle, Sean Doyle, Tony Bruton and Meghan Moran. This committee

carried the trees - strung lights - watered the trees - vacuumed, unwrapped lights.

MONEY COUNTERS

Thank you to our many volunteers who came out on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and every weekend to count our

Sunday and Holyday collections.

WEBSITE

Remember to visit our parish website www.stmaryrutherford.org for all parish updates and information

regarding programs and ministries.

USHERS

We can’t possibly name them all but thank you to all who come together each week and are asked to help with our

Sunday/Holyday collections.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: PARK CLEANERS on Park Avenue in Rutherford for dry cleaning our vestments and other

liturgical linens - free of charge - all year long!

FUNERAL HOMES

We cannot close without offering our GREAT THANKS to COLLINS CALHOUN FUNERAL HOME - [201] 939-

1050and MACAGNA DIFFILY ONORATO FUNERAL HOME - [201] 939-0098. There is NEVER a time throughout the year

that they have let us down. Their generosity is incredibly generous and we have much to be thankful for.

Although many did not get everything they hoped for [does anyone ever get all they hope for in this life?]; and even if

every wish and dream did not come true, and even if you might be among those facing an uncertain future [and who isn’t?]

; there is so much more good news! Christmas Masses were filled with faithful worshippers; many children beamed with

excitement as they told me all that Santa Claus brought them; and God’s children of every age joyfully sang out how the Lord

fulfilled His promise to be our Emmanuel - our God-with-us - in Jesus Christ, our newborn King!

However, as I said in my Christmas homily, this Good News, the Gospel of Emmanuel – God-with-us – can only help

those who make room for the Lord and His Church in their everyday life. You are certainly among the ‘wise’ ones who make

room for Jesus and His Church in their life! Your generous Christmas gifts – as well as your prayers and active support - will

enable our sacred liturgies to continue to be exemplary celebrations of our great Catholic Faith; they will also keep our many

parish ministries thriving without cutbacks. On behalf of the Lord and His holy People – thank you again for your sacrificial gift!

With God’s grace and blessing, may our consistent participation in and support of our great Church in this New Year

reflect even more Good News into a darkened world that needs what we alone can bring into it: the Light of Christ’s Truth and

Peace.

Allow me, also, to thank all those who have made the additional sacrifice for our “Recapture the Dream” capital

campaign; to date 665 parishioners have pledged $2,000,000 and 62% of the goal has been reached. Please continue to pray

the Memorare daily for the success of our Capital Campaign.

Please be assured of my prayerful best wishes for a safe and healthy New Year.

. . . and above all: THANK YOU to all who brought goodies, cards, cookies, cakes, fruit baskets and flowers and any

expression of love and support. Your prayerful support, physical presence, and your sacrificial gifts to your parish at Christmas

and throughout the year enable us to continue Christ’s mission. May God bless you for your generosity.
